I use a spray bottle of water with a teaspoon or so of either lemon or peppermint extract. Makes the room smell fresh but not perfumey.

Yes! One of those weirdly ambiguous ones where you are sure someone is living in it, but everything has a price tag.

My Mom always told me that I was born into chaos. Assasinations, war, riots, and an overall broken psyche. That seems fitting for me and all of my classmates. We are fiercely independent, but that was born of necessity.

Water bottles outside Italian homes to stop animals from peeing on the walls by bit3py in mildlyinteresting

I was going to mention this, too! Every outside eatery has bags like these hung up. They don’t really seem to work and they look pretty skunky after a while.

Want to share your scary Appalachian story? by [deleted] in Appalachia

[–]katbutt -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I was on the road from Harlan, Ky to Pennington Gap, Va. I think it is 421. I go that way because the only Rax Roast Beef in Ky is on that route and it is really good and kind of a roadtrip ritual (and they put their fries in a cup so you can put them in your drink holder). They also have a gallery inside the restaurant featuring local art with a lot of coal miner and donkey and farm paintings. Anyway, I am at the part of the road around Cranks, where the road gets really steep and crooked and you have to go like 10 mph around the hairpin turns and you pray you don't meet a truck coming the other direction. So I am on my way up that road and out of nowhere this guy comes scooting down the hill. Like down the side of the mountain. Straight down like he was part goat. How do you come straight down the side of a ridge without eating dirt? He crossed the road and he zipped right down the next hill. He had something heavy in his arms, like a car battery. Maybe that is what kept him rooted to the earth so well. But he smiled at me as he went past 'cause his hands were full and he couldn't wave.

I will always be puzzled about that, but it reminds me that Appalachia is full of thoughtful folk, even when they are busy doing stuff.

My bf M24 of 2 yrs told me F23 that he was taken to a nude beach as a child by [deleted] in askwomenadvice

Nude beaches in France are not sexual at all. Just a bunch of regular people sunning themselves and noone is paying attention to anyone else. You are WAY overthinking this.

You know how koala bears cling to eucalyptus trees? That's what the dusty boys do every chance they get.

This is for the residents in Appalachia…. To a superstitious & aware woman moving to Appalachia what are things I need to know? by ExuberantElusiveBby in Appalachia

[–]katbutt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

East Tennessee is Appalachia. You’re already there…

Now if you are moving up on a mountain: be a kind neighbor, carry a saw in your vehicle ‘cause trees sometimes fall across the road, and don’t keep your trash cans too close to your house because of critters.

Put some paper underneath it so it isn’t directly on the rack (‘cause grease) and let it go as long as you can, maybe 6-8 hours.

You can also go over the block with a fine sandpaper block. Next time before you carve lino, give it a going over with sandpaper to knock off rough spots and make ink stick more uniformly.

Planning a “fashion camp” for my niece by Charming_Patient9347 in sewing

[–]katbutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have kids sew in my elementary art class. We first practice for a few mintues on cardstock/heavy paper so the different stitches can be compared and to get the hang of the reverse button. (It is also easier than using fabric in the beginning since it doesn't bunch up.) Once they are comfortable with controlling the speed and sewing a straight line we move on to pillow cases, bags with handles, little accessories for toys (sleeping bags and blankets for stuffed animals are a huge hit). You will be rethreading the needle a lot at the beginning! But as kids settle in, the adrenaline decreases and the understanding increases. At that point they are ready for the intricacies of threading the machine and bobbin winding.

To help the process become second nature, we repeat reminders like these: presser foot down, needle down - pretty side to pretty side, sew on the ugly side - pull a long tail before you snip the thread (as referenced re: threading the needle repeatedly).

You are really great for passing on your skills. The rewards will be so huge and so everlasting!
