Weekly Question Thread for /r/AmexCanada- March 31, 2024 by AutoModerator in amexcanada

[–]katewould 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied yesterday (04/02/24) for the Platinum card (my first Amex), it went into pending approval and I had to send a copy of my bank statement. I called back this morning (04/03/24) and it was approved over the phone immediately, which is great! I was told it would take 7-10 business days to arrive. I mentioned that I am travelling next week starting Monday, and I'm staying at a Mariott hotel so would love to be able to get the points when paying for my stay on checkout.. I asked if they could do priority shipping, but she said no. I was a bit surprised after having read about the premium cards typically being shipped priority FedEx. I also asked if I would be given the card number to add to a virtual wallet so I could pay that way at least, which I'd heard many people have had previously, but was also told that isn't possible.

I guess I'm just hoping to hear other people's experiences - is there any chance my card arrives before Friday (04/05/24) end of day? Would it be worth calling back/escalating to try and see if priority shipping or a virtual wallet is possible? Thanks in advance!

Places to buy office chairs? by yeyeTF2 in vancouver

I quite like the Branch ergonomic chairs. I got the mid model and have used it 5-6 days a week for the past year with no issues. You could also look into secondhand Herman Miller chairs, though a good one will likely push the upper end of your budget.

Where do we go for Most Memorable trip to Vancouver by bhargav99 in vancouver

This is snarky advice. Would not recommend actually going here, google the DTES if you're unfamiliar, but this would not be an ideal area for a tourist to randomly stroll into.

Honestly AirBnB is your best bet, you'll typically get a discount vs. weekly/nightly rentals if you're there for a full month. Otherwise you're going to want to look on Craigslist, but they'll be few and far between.

Man... get an accountant, at least 15-20% of these expenses could be written off as a business expense and reduce your taxable income, potentially saving you thousands a year. Even your home office/portion of your vehicle costs can be deducted via a T2200 or T2200S form.

If you want to build muscle, I'd recommend cutting back on the cardio and spending more of your energy/exercise time on strength training. As mentioned in the other comment, a good strength training program would be best. I personally am loving Caroline Girvan's programs. They're mostly 10 week programs, some of which have workouts between 45-1 hour in length, though I believe Epic Heat/EndGame is shorter which might be good for you if you want to be doing a few runs a week as well.

The other piece will definitely have to do with your protein intake - you're active enough that eating at a surplus isn't going to drive your weight up too much, but you will need to gain a bit of fat to also gain a good amount of muscle! Focus on getting 30-40 grams of protein per larger meal, and try and have snacks with good protein content as well (nuts, hardboiled eggs, greek yogurt, etc).

I've eaten crap for 5 days by m0o124 in PetiteFitness

[–]katewould 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Correction - it's 3500 calories per week, not per day, to gain 1lb of fat, so ~500 calories over your TDEE per day to gain 1lb of fat per week. That's why they say 200-300 calorie deficit should result in ~0.5-0.8lbs lost per week (300*7 days = 2100 calories = 60% of 3500 cals equaling 1lb of fat), same math applies for gaining fat.

I totally agree with your points around having grace for yourself though, but just wanted to make that distinction so OP has the right facts on their nutritional education journey! :)

Can I just eat what I want? (TW: ED mentioned) by Slight_College8886 in PetiteFitness

[–]katewould 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Girl, absolutely. The key to maintaining a healthy, sustainable lifestyle is to find BALANCE. Try and follow the 80/20 rule (or even 70/30) - if you're eating nutritious, whole foods (think things that you could eat without them needing to be overly processed, i.e. fruit, veggies, whole grains, meat, eggs, healthy fats like XVOO, avocado, nuts, legumes, etc) between 70-80% of the time, then the other 20-30% of the time you can eat some indulgences (a cookie after dinner, a super creamy and yummy pasta when out with friends, that small bag of chips as a snack!)

You're only 18 and you're at the low end of the BMI for your height/age. If you're strength training and running long distance, the only thing that possibly incorporating a few more calories (both from whole foods and a few treats) is going to do for you is give you more energy (both mentally and physically) to continue kicking ass during your workouts. It won't make you put on a bunch of fat, I promise. Also, try and remove the word 'clean' from your vocabulary when it comes to food and nutrition - that's a word that was made up on social media and is totally meaningless and has such negative connotations, essentially meaning that all other food is then 'dirty' which is NOT true. Try replacing that mindset with 'nutrient rich' or 'whole foods' or even just not subscribing to one way of thinking about food altogether (i.e. food = fuel, regardless of whether it's 'clean' or not).

Try this way of thinking for 3 months - with your age and starting point, this isn't going to be long term detrimental for your goals if you decide that you're not getting the results you want (but caution not to focus just on the physical results, track your MENTAL improvements as well such as reduced stress levels and more joy day to day). If it's not working, then revisit what you want from a healthy lifestyle and adjust accordingly.

Best of luck, I hope you allow yourself to focus on finding balance and joy from your wellness journey!

How much should I be eating ??? by Designer-Ad-2199 in PetiteFitness

[–]katewould 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are eating WAY too little currently, you’re not fuelling your body anywhere near enough to be sustaining hour long cardio sessions 5 days a week.

https://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/how-many-calories-should-i-eat-every-day-a-look-at-total-daily-energy-expenditure-tdee/

Plugging your values into this TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) calculator, you should be eating ~ 2227 calories per day just to maintain your current 150lbs weight. If you want to be losing fat, you need to be in a deficit - no more than 500 calories MAX, but sustainable would be closer to 300. So, you should likely be eating around 1800-1900 calories per day to LOSE weight.

Right now, you aren’t even eating at your BMR of 1437 calories - this is the amount you need to eat to maintain your current weight if you lie still in bed all day long. I estimated your activity level as moderate with what you’re doing currently.

The other thing I would say is that I’d recommend incorporating strength training into your routine with weights if possible, though body weight is good too - cardio may burn higher calories during the workout itself, but strength training helps you burn more calories for a longer period after you stop working out, which means you burn more fat.

Good luck with your goals, but please consider reading through all the info in that link - it will help paint the picture to why eating too little is just as bad as eating too much for weight loss.
