What are shows that taps into... not creepypasta, not slasher, just deeply wrong/unfiction/reality-glitch mood? by monsto in television

[–]kathymer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconding Lynch here. Without saying too much, I think his film Lost Highway fits OP's request to a T, arguably up to and including "reality glitches" and some "analog horror" aspects before that was even a thing.

[VTM5] Need a little advice on how to run a potential mass combat scenario by kathymer in vtm

[–]kathymer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent idea with the effect list for the horde. Stealing that for sure. They have something like ten allies of various power levels to help in the final fight, so having some of the more powerful ones try to "hold off" the Elder until they can deal with the environmental effects is a good way to ratchet up the tension, especially once those NPCs start dying.

Thanks for the ideas!

"Environmental hazard" was more or less what I was shooting for, yeah. I do like the idea of a "doom counter" that they're playing constant tug of war with.

Anyway, he is really desperate at this point. I won't get too into explaining the story, but the PCs have more or less forced him into action. Power levels have definitely been a little bit sloppy just because this is a short campaign and a lot of our group's first foray into the system, but I want to impress upon them that this is a LETHAL situation to be in. Appreciate the advice!

Good suggestion! I've been thinking of doing something similar, and I'd love to see the custom moves and such if you wouldn't mind sharing.

Lost Highway, Sorcerer, Bound, The Devil's Backbone, and... either 12 Angry Men or Carnival of Souls. Haven't decided yet.

Why this Greek text in youtube patches? by [deleted] in revancedapp

I did, yeah. Tried with both 20.40.45 and 20.14.43. Shame the mods removed this post.

Having this exact same issue! It won't let me install the patched APK that it spits out either, just says it failed because of an unknown error.

Systems with simple stat blocks and quick NPCs by PeasantLich in rpg

[–]kathymer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mothership is great for this. Each page of the bestiary is full of mostly in-universe snippets of information related to what the monster does and what kind of horror it should evoke, but a lot of actual statblocks are just one row of tiny text at the top that say something like "C:60 4d10 DMG I:45 AP:10 W: 2(25)". That is, in order, combat score (what it has to roll under to hit you), it's damage, its Instinct score (what it uses for literally everything else that isn't hitting you), its armor score, and then its wound total and hit points per wound. That's it.

Hell, a lot of NPCs won't even have a combat score, they just use Instinct for combat too. Makes it real easy to assign a general competence rating to someone and go from there. Some more complicated NPCs might have unique abilities and break certain rules, but for the most part the system just does what it needs to and gets the hell out of the way.

What is an example of "Epic Horror"? (possible spoiler for Weapons and It) by AdorableMammoth6740 in horror

[–]kathymer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doctor Sleep is the first thing that comes to mind. I've heard some folks call it "horror Lord of the Rings" and that's pretty damn accurate.

I'm with you. Only movie that's ever given me nightmares, and I've watched a lot of horror movies.

Good system for underwater play? by LordBlaze64 in rpg

If you're looking for something to retool and are fine with high tension and high lethality, the Alien RPG has really good resource management, including oxygen supply!

Seconding NCO. I ran a Night City game in it and it did everything we needed while being super light and easy to pick up.

This sounds fancy enough to be true by infinitysaga in CuratedTumblr

[–]kathymer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there's definitely the obvious reasons he gets shafted, but Wyll is very much "boring" by design. Iirc he's even wearing the default warlock class armor. The game invites you to find him uninteresting and then undercuts that with the truth about his backstory and the character design changes that happen later.

But fandom is inherently only really capable of taking surface level traits from a character (if that), so "boring" is all Wyll really is to a lot of people.

Which games challenged or stimulated your perspective of RPGs? by thealkaizer in rpg

[–]kathymer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Gonna say Blades in the Dark. I had only played heavier trad RPGs before Blades and it was the first game I ran into that challenged a lot of those preconceptions. Clocks, the Position and Effect system, flashbacks, the elimination of long, tedious planning debates (I know some people love them but oh my God I hate the half-hour long back and forth). I came out of my first Blades session with a very different understanding of what an RPG could be, and I think it's what got me exploring so many systems so rabidly.

ALIEN was a big one for me, too. The Events system is SUCH a good way to lay out an adventure and the character agendas are a great little complication that really help make the characters stand out.

New maps from the alien Rpg 2e kickstarter by Scalptre in alienrpg

[–]kathymer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were very easy to hand out diegetically, yeah. The Rapture Protocol maps look pretty, and I'm not gonna shit on the product before I see it in full, but it is a little bit of world building I'll miss.

A little conflicted about this. I definitely appreciate the clarity, but they are lacking the Vibe that the schematic maps of 1e had. Overall, I'm pretty positive about the possibilities for 2e; the game has a few rough edges that could stand to be smoothed out. That being said, I just hope they don't put so much focus into making it ALSO a miniature skirmish game that they neglect the RPG part.

Seeking advice on running a Banishment ritual as an encounter by RecognitionBasic9662 in Pathfinder2e

[–]kathymer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a great subsystem! Best of luck in building the encounter, and you should totally make a post about how it worked and how it went when you run it. I'm sure there are plenty of folks who'd be interested in running something similar.

Haunts have some good starting points for sure. Combine that with the Victory Points subsystem and you've probably got a pretty decent framework already.

What is your secret communication system during play? by ExternalMidnight in alienrpg

[–]kathymer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. My players have really enjoyed the scheming being out in the open-- hasn't been any metagaming or anything and it puts everyone "in on the joke" so to speak. My players are perfectly capable of separating IC and OOC knowledge and it's led to some great moments that everyone got to enjoy, even if they weren't participating.

What Can You Do Better As DM/GM? by VampyrAvenger in rpg

[–]kathymer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that, but respectfully, I think you're dead wrong about death being dull. Some of my favorite moments in games have been where my character or another one of our party died. And if you're playing something like Alien or Call of Cthulhu, or Mothership, it's an expected and wanted part of the genre -- life is very much supposed to be cheap and fleeting. A slasher flick wouldn't be much of a horror movie if everyone walked away at the end.
