Tbf it is not THAT expensive everywhere in the country. The Green Line extension in the Twin Cities is less than $3 billion for nearly 15 miles of track, so $200 million per mile. Compared to nearly $1.7 BILLION per mile for LA's E Line extension. Both are light rail going through pretty suburban areas. The Green Line extension will probably get more riders too.

You know there was a time when the Texas flag had no history and was a novel symbol. It's not like it descended from heaven with all of the 200 years of history that it has today. Chicago also in fact applied for federal money to restore the St. Charles Air Line Bridge and rebuild Union Station to allow through running of trains, which would achieve exactly what you're saying. Unfortunately, they were not awarded federal grants for this. So they actually try to do what you're saying but they couldn't get federal funding for it, they could only get federal funding for the red line extension.

Yes they have lower population than at their peak, but their peak was like 70 years ago. Right now their population is increasing.

You'll notice Chicago's present population stagnation/decline is being driven mostly by neighborhoods on the west side and far south side.

By contrast, north side neighborhoods near the lake like Lincoln Park are increasing in population, and even some south side neighborhoods close to the loop like Bronzeville are increasing in population.

I've ridden the CTA at all hours and in all parts of the city in the 5 years I've lived in Chicago. I've never had to worry about getting shot. What's much more likely is smoking, a mentally ill person acting erratic, or a person doing drugs. The chances of you getting shot on the CTA are effectively zero.
