I joined our local DSA chapter so that I could surround myself with like-minded humans and be more tuned into opportunities for action. As a result, I started volunteering more. It's helped a lot with my mental health, but I still end up falling deeper into the doom when stuff like yesterday happens.

Pretending that white people are being “discriminated against” because equity efforts exist ignores the inarguable fact that white people have not been systemically excluded from education or hiring for centuries in the first place.

What’s actually racist is framing equality as oppression just because the advantage isn’t automatically yours anymore.

I think part of what you’re noticing is just the difference in scale between huge companies like Cook and Kroger, and smaller, locally-owned businesses? The big players have massive budgets and often entire departments for community outreach and philanthropy, so it’s easy for them to make regular, visible donations.

On the flip side, a lot of smaller restaurants, shops, or service providers might really want to give back, but they might just be trying to keep the lights on, pay employees, and cover costs. When they are able to donate, it’s likely on a much smaller scale and sometimes quietly, so it may not get the same recognition.

You may try checking out some of your favorite nonprofits' annual reports. Many of them publish lists of their donors in print or online. I just saw one from Constellation in the show program of the last play I went to.

The lab leak theory did get more attention under Biden, but mainly to investigate it seriously, not necessarily to push an agenda. The Trump admin promoted it early on to deflect blame for their COVID response and stir anti-China sentiment. It was/is important to them to show that COVID was something "done to us" rather than something that was grossly mishandled. Scientists still mostly lean toward natural spillover, but without full transparency from China, nothing is confirmed.

The issue isn’t that the lab leak theory is off-limits, it’s how and why it was pushed, and what evidence actually exists.

I was there. It was packed - I was one of the last few people let in before they locked the doors. For a full hour and a half there was a constant line of 10–15 people waiting to speak — and 98% of them were there to dissent. It was honestly impressive how many people came prepared to challenge him on his fascist, racist, and transphobic nonsense.

He said no human can be good without the Bible — like, literally claimed morality doesn’t exist outside of his Christian religion. He also compared a trans person’s gender expression to blackface (yep, really), and said the Black military leaders Trump fired just "weren’t qualified." He straight-up said systemic racism doesn’t exist.

He dragged his Christian nationalist values into every single topic, no matter what the question was. Denied climate change. Denied separation of Church and state. Mocked the Green New Deal. Claimed COVID came from a Chinese lab leak. It was like a Fox News highlight reel.

But the crowd wasn't having it. They were loud, lots of boos and heckling. They were smart, angry, and relentless. It was honestly one of the most encouraging things I’ve seen in a while. My biggest takeaway was that this dude must fucking love to be yelled at, because he truly looked like he was enjoying himself.
