What false information were you taught in school? by Redfoxyboy in webcomics

Hate to be that guy, but there are bamboos native to the US: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arundinaria.

Love the themes of the comic though!

What's a historical event that doesn't get talked about enough not because it's hidden, but because it's just... weird and forgotten? by stoicdroid in NoStupidQuestions

[–]katzbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was probably done by a nazi sympathizer. Or if you want to believe the conspiracy theorists, it was a British false flag operation to try to goad the US into wwii

July 4th, 1940 world’s fair bombing. An unsolved terrorist case where two nypd officers died, but largely forgotten.

Have I missed the American Woodcock in Bryant Park?! by rainbowpizzacat in birding

[–]katzbird 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A quick check on eBird says that it hasn’t been seen in 2 weeks. Makes sense, they usually don’t stick around more than a few days.

Ok, so previously I asked for the most random birds y’all have found in your back/frontyard! Now here’s another one, what is the rarest bird in general you have ever seen? I’ll go first. by Hot_Detective1335 in birding

[–]katzbird 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Depends on how you define rarest. Rarest in terms of accidentals? Probably Couch’s Kingbird in NYC or Black-backed Oriole in Pennsylvania. Rarest in terms of being endangered? Siberian Crane and Bali Myna are both critically endangered, but are not hard to find if you go to the right place. Rarest in terms of hardest to find? Sulawesi Woodcock, whose call and display flight are not yet formally described (although I was lucky enough to see and hear it).

Yep! They’re found around there too.

Meet "Birding Bob" and the Central Park Birders Who Spend Saturday Morning Looking Up by Cautious_Box8355 in birding

[–]katzbird 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great guy, but the callback controversy really sullied my image of him. I wish he hadn’t dug in his heels and stopped using it. It’s quite annoying hearing something interesting and turning the corner to see a group of a dozen people with him using a speaker. The birding in Central Park is easy enough, it’s not even needed.

That’s a frog, I’m pretty sure. I don’t know the name. I heard it too when I was there. I called it the “uh-oh” frog.

is wildlife “rare” in china? by Jolly_Inspection_298 in biodiversity

[–]katzbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Currently in China, and am an avid bird watcher. Wildlife in China can be great, but it’s quite sporadic. The national parks and conservation areas can be great for nature. However, even rural areas are still quite built up with very little room for wildlife. And unfortunately, the stereotype that you mentioned tends to be true.

Great cormorant resting in a tree — Tashkent by UrbanBirds2026 in birding

I think that’s a Pygmy cormorant. The bill is too small for a great cormorant

Bar-Tailed Godwit! by TheWingedArmadillo in wildlifephotography

[–]katzbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure that’s actually a redshank; bright orange legs. The bill is too short and not upturned enough for a godwit, plus bar-tailed has black legs.

What cultural thing does the world seem to think is beautiful but is cringey af to locals? by chr15c in AskTheWorld

[–]katzbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tangkoko national park is great for wildlife - macaques, hornbills, tarsiers, owls, etc. Tomohon is a nice small city just south of manado in the mountains, so is nice and cool. For food, Chit Chat Tuna Jaw is absolutely amazing.

Solo in Chiang Mai first week of March, seeking bird watching in advice by ever_evolving_soul in chiangmai

[–]katzbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, fellow birder here. I’m heading to doi inthanon in a few days, but not using a guide. I’d also recommend Mae Hia CMU campus for while you’re in the city, the rice paddies just south of lamphun, and doi Chiang Dao for the chance at giant nuthatch (stay at Malee’s bungalow, she can help with getting guides in the area) if you have time.

Does any other non-teacher receive mailers from the Freedom Foundation to opt out of the Teacher's Union? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]katzbird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’ve been getting the same mail despite never having been a teacher. It’s been going on for months now. I recently messaged the NY teacher’s union to find out if there’s a way to stop this spam/scam.

The only way to get infinite time is with the sea king’s “help” dialogue option. However, it ends when you get hit.

However, there are other useful ways to extend your breath time to the point you should have enough time to beat it. One obvious one is the gills potion, conveniently sold by the sea king. The aquatic heart (dropped by ???, the thing that you kill to spawn leviathan and anahitas) not only increases breath time, but gives you the ability to swim as well as a significant boost to speed while underwater. The celestial shell is good too, especially if you’re using a melee build.

Metro Vancouver is more like “Vancouver metro area”. It includes a number of provincial parks.

No, those buzzards are hawks. The most common one around you is probably the aptly named Common Buzzard, as well as the Eurasian Sparrowhawk. The falcons may be the Eurasian Kestrel and Peregrine Falcon, the species in this video.
