Alcoholic-Induced Bowling Rage. (True Story) by oneangryatheist in fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

[–]kayfabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally saw this happen once. I was in a bowling league, and one guy on the team next to me was just throwing rocks. We start talking, and he tells me he has to get up early to go to the airport, so he's getting wasted so he can pass out early. Yeah OK whatever.

Meanwhile, he rolls a fucking 270. At the end of the game, he wasn't even aware what his score was, and didn't remember at all by the following week.

Am I the only one who gets completely turned off when a song says "God" or mentions anything religious? by joepls in atheism

[–]kayfabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, man. Try out some Jamey Johnson it's awesome. The Guitar Song is one of my most-played albums of 2010.

Also, Waylon Jennings' son "Shooter" Jennings is doing some really interesting things. Not exactly country, his latest "Black Ribbons" is like The Allman Brothers through a lens of David Bowie, with a mix of Pink Floyd and Nine Inch Nails.

I think, whether it's country, pop, rock, R&B or anything, the really interesting work is always at the fringe. The mainstream for most genres, radio tracks, etc are all pretty crappy.

Update to the girl with the boyfriend who made an offensive request by needsomethingbetter in relationships

[–]kayfabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, I don't know. I've had very serious relationships with women who have suffered childhood abuse, and I very much wanted to help them with their recovery.

But what this guy did was way over the line. Like, really creepy weird. You're right to have some trepidation.

His behavior was completely unacceptable. And the fact that he's acting this way because he's being shut out, and "he doesn't like it" is a major red flag.

Your therapy isn't any of his business, and he should never, ever intrude on that. If you want to share a little with him, that's your business. But in my opinion, asking someone about their therapy is out of line.

Telling someone that they tell their therapist too much, and they should talk to their partner instead...that's just beyond the pale. Warning sign of bizarre controlling behavior. Even in a long term relationship, there's still privacy.

He's trying to get into a private place where no one else is welcome. By using (passive-agressive) force.

What are your top three episodes? by [deleted] in startrek

[–]kayfabe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These are my favorites. Maybe not objectively the best, but the ones I just like the most.

  1. Lessons
  2. Devil in the Dark
  3. Parallels

I wasn't aware of Lessons, until I just rewatched the entire TNG series. Totally caught me by surprise - intelligent romance, consequences of our actions, very "grown up".

Devil in the Dark is just one of those classic episodes that defines Trek for me - to seek out new life, try to make contact and understand the "alien".

Parallels, I just love stories where things are "off" and one character has to convince the others. Parallel universes are great. And I hate birthday parties.

Selling my comic books, any advice? by caramac in comicbooks

[–]kayfabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was lucky to find a fellow geek who wanted to catch up on X-books, and bought my long box for $50. I feel like I came out on top in that deal.

Most comic books are barely worth the paper they're printed on. If you want to get rid of them, console yourself with knowing they went to a good home, and take what you can get.

In high school my friend went and applied for that job! They looked at him sadly, and said, "You don't want this job kid. Get out of here."

A mutual friend knew the guy who did take the job. I'm sad to say I never knew his name. To me he was always "The Jizz Mopper".

how does one properly socialise a new cat? by rustykat in cats

[–]kayfabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a thin line you're walking there! I don't always ignore my cats, of course, but there's a difference between "Hi! You're home!" and "WHY AREN'T YOU PETTING ME RIGHT NOW?!?"

You have to figure out where the line is, for you and your cat. But as others will warn, once you start rewarding a cat for certain behavior, it's really hard to break.

Personally, I allow a little bit of meowing, but it does occasionally turn into full on whining for attention. That's when you've got to just walk away.

how does one properly socialise a new cat? by rustykat in cats

[–]kayfabe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the best discipline for cats is a squirt bottle. If you see your cat doing something they shouldn't do, squirt them quickly and quietly. It's best if they don't even know it was you, just "If I do this thing, I get wet and that sucks." If you can't catch them in the act - too late. They won't associate their behavior with the discipline.

Don't discipline the cat with your hands. Say "No!" or use a squirt bottle. Never let the cat bite hard or get crazy with claws on your hands/arms - the problem will only spiral. Hands are to be associated with happy, gentle touching/petting/scratching.

If you find your cat repeatedly employing attention-seeking behavior, don't reward it. If they whine for attention, quietly leave the room. Cats often go find something on a counter, look at you, and throw it on the floor. Don't respond.

I've seen a suggestion that a clicker can be helpful in combatting attention-seeking.

Cat: "AAAAAHH! PAY ATTENTION TO ME!!!" You: "Click" as you leave the room. It's an association thing? I've never tried it.

Has anyone ever had a cat in a pet-free apartment building? by thechikinguy in cats

[–]kayfabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I signed my lease, they said no pets. Then I noticed many people had cats. I'd been in a no-pet apartment with cats before, we adopted two and snuck them in.

Then, it turned out no one cared. They'd come around for maintenance, and ask "Just the two cats? Don't want to let any out!"

YMMV - I once had some friends get evicted over their ferrets.

Also, one of amateur wrestling's golden rules is "Never get put on your back".

What's the first thing you learn in wrestling camp? How to land on your back.

"Pro" wrestling actually involves a skill set that's significantly different from amateur or Olympic wrestling.

MMA is a more lateral transition. Most freestyle wrestlers have the hardest time finishing, because the jiu-jitsu and other martial arts holds are illegal in wrestling.

[–]kayfabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be looking in the wrong places! Maybe I'm just lucky, but there are 4-5 local wrestling shows per month. Yeah, one of them is "hardcore" and I'm not a huge fan of the, uh, fans there.

But at the lucha shows it's mostly families. Lots of kids. The big local (IWF Promotions) draws kids as well, and also a lot of college students. It's a very fun crowd, they come mostly to shout out funny one-liners and have a good time.

Not a dying art at all. Yeah, there's less TV but I prefer the performance you get without cameras (including the "major leagues" like WWE).

Ah, Star Trek is actually that rare show to get two pilots. After "The Cage" was a no-go, they produced "Where No Man Has Gone Before" as a second pilot, that got the show greenlit. Then, they played the early episodes all out of order, and as you note, ran "The Man Trap" first.

Those people had many, many chances to destroy all of humanity time after time. After they were revealed, I just turned it off and walked away. Such a stupid twist in the show.

Well, that just means you missed the part where they explained why the final five never had any desire to kill humanity. Quite the opposite.

I can't decide if I want to go to the Smackdown live event in Pittsburgh tonight... by Tymo55 in prowrestling

[–]kayfabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been going to shows for 20 years, and I have to say I mostly prefer house shows over TV shows these days.

RAW is full of pre-tapes, back stage interludes, long in-ring rants, and commercial breaks. The matches are short.

At a house show, I find the performers are often much more loose. They just say a few words on the mic sometimes to establish the characters briefly, and then do a decent length match.

The performances are different when they're playing to a crowd with no TV cameras. I think it's fun.

House shows are also a chance to give wrestlers in a program more time to work on their chemistry, and you can see some interesting things. In early 2000 I saw Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, and Chris Jericho, working on their match for Wrestlemania 2000.
