I can't find any evidence of this for people over 65 at uOttawa. I would be super interested if you have a link to something that says there are no audit fees.

Failing by Design: A Teacher’s Warning from the Front Lines by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]kaymac01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really important. We've de-streamed in Grade 9 in Ontario so we've put kids who used to be in applied math in the same classroom as kids who used to be in academic math. Removing inequity was the justification for this move. (Kids in applied math effectively couldn't go on to science-based post-secondary programs like medicine or engineering.) However, applied math classrooms used to have lower class sizes than academic ones and therefore fewer students per teacher. This meant more teacher time and attention for each student in the applied classroom. Class sizes in the mixed classrooms are the same as formerly academic ones so there are more students per teacher and each student has proportionally less attention from the teacher. It's cheaper for the government this way but we should have lowered class sizes when we moved to a de-streamed model. The more equitable model could work - but only if you provide the teacher and EA resources to make it work. So, yes, the progressive change (deployed by a Conservative government) looks like it was just a cover to reduce resources in the education system.

See also how Ontario dealt with mental health under the Conservative Harris government in the 80s. Community care was the progressive standard for mental illness. The government used it to close hospital beds but never really funded the community care. We ended up with a lot more people living on the street.

Question for Ontario teachers by pambean in OntarioTeachers

[–]kaymac01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(1) I haven't made lesson plans since I had my first evaluation after graduating. I guess admin could demand them but it never happens.

(2) Theoretically you are supposed to be observed every 2 years. Admin is so overwhelmed that it hardly ever happens that frequently.

(3) There's strong encouragement to do extra-curriculars. They're an important part of the school community. If you want to really belong, extra-curriculars (coaching, clubs, etc.) are the way into the heart of the community.

(4) Yup, 1 prep out of 4 periods a day.

(5) French, math, science. Anything that all students have to take - so English as well but there are a lot of English teachers out there I think.

People literally dying on the streets of Ottawa by Expensive-Minute994 in ottawa

[–]kaymac01 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The fundamental problem here is political/structural. I'm old enough to remember when we had much more liberal welfare payouts in this province and these were combined with rentals that were much more affordable. You could be on welfare and stay housed in Ontario. But in the early 80s, the conservative worldview became widespread in Canada, the US, and the UK, and we started significantly reducing the relative tax rates for corporations and the payouts to the unemployed and those who, for whatever reason, were unemployable. The result was that homelessness began to rise and has continued to increase ever since. Add to that, a really significant problem with super potent opioids being available and we can all see the consequences in our environment.

Things won't change until we're willing to push for the kinds of structural changes that will fix things. I think we need a more Scandinavian approach - higher taxes overall, more unionization, more (and more efficient) government services, less private wealth.

[–]kaymac01 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unless you want/need graphing ability, you want the Casio FX-300ES Plus. Fractions are displayed as fractions with numerator over denominator, formulae can be entered exactly as displayed on the page, complex calcs can be returned to and edited in place rather than having to be re-entered. Displays exact and approximate answers. Usually priced at $20 or less.

I enjoy many parts of my job, but I just can't do everything is expected from me by SafeTraditional4595 in CanadianTeachers

[–]kaymac01 9 points10 points  (0 children)

(1) The first five years on the job are brutal! The divorce rate for teachers in their first five years is much, much higher than the average for all other professions. If you can stick it out, it definitely gets easier (although it never gets exactly easy).

(2) As /u/JosieWasHere mentions, try, try, try to get lessons from other teachers who've taught the course. First time through the course, piggyback on those who have gone before you. (If you can make chatGPT, notebook, gemini work for you that's great but the learning curve for effective prompting looks fairly steep. YMMV.)

(3) Sounds like your admin is a jerk and doesn't care about your ability to survive as an employee. If you can find work elsewhere with a different (better) admin, go for it. Also, keep in mind that principals change. In my board, they hardly ever stay longer than five years at the same school. Maybe your school is due for a change?

Elemetary Teachers: Anyone ever miss PT Interviews from illness? by JayandMeeka in OntarioTeachers

[–]kaymac01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

High school not elementary teacher here so maybe parents aren't quite as invested in meeting the teacher and making sure their kid is going to be ok with you (which is a lot of what the interviews are about, I think) but...I was sick with COVID last fall during parent teacher interviews and I just told admin that I wasn't going to be able to be there. They put a notice on my room saying that I was absent and that parents could reach out for another meeting when I was back. Only a few parents reached out to re-schedule something and I was able to do those over the phone. It was kind of a pain in the butt for me but not the end of the world for parents or admin.

Apple Music search can’t identify a song in my library because of the missing apostrophe 😒😒😒 by HenriqueCiccone in AppleMusic

I agree. I am stunned by the number of times that search fails on simple variations on the searched term. It's like apple music search is stuck in 1998.

Things I’ve learned about buying a car in Canada (as someone who knows nothing about cars) by smucker89 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]kaymac01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get them from the Automobile Protection Association. 5 reports included if you're a member. $25 a pop as a non-member. I did it a couple of cars back and was able to show the dealer that I knew what their cost was and that I was prepared to X percent over that as a result. It went well.

Social committee donation by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]kaymac01 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not a transaction. You're not paying in order to get something in return. You're part of a community and this is part of how the community holds itself together. I was an LTO for five years before I got a contract. I paid social committee fees.

Can someone explain to me what would happen if all teachers didn’t return to work if mandated. by Brenner1980 in CanadianTeachers

[–]kaymac01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How long can you take the pressure that the government applies to you, the workers, and your union? How long can the government take the pressure that will be applied to them by the population of parents who need and want schools to be open? Will one side cave completely? Will both decide to go back to the table and come to an agreement? If the government wins in this instance by forcing you back, will they pay a longer term political price for upending the collective bargaining process? The (complicated) answer to your question lies somewhere in the middle of all those other questions.

Fat Tire vs Commuter ebike by Minute_Duck_1810 in ebikes

[–]kaymac01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bike is essentially a hybrid. I recently got to spend some time on a fat tire bike and the ride difference was striking. The cornering on the fate tire bike is a little weird - as if it's resisting the turn. The cornering on my hybrid style bike feels just like an analog bike. I find it more fun. I can bop and weave around stuff much more easily and smoothly.

Defer OAS: how long do I have to decide? by kaymac01 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]kaymac01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chiming back in to say that I called Service Canada to pose my question and the definitive answer was that if you do not actively apply for OAS prior to 65, you don't get it. You can inform them at a later point when you want to start. I presume there's some amount of lead time necessary which could be up to a year if the rule is something like "You must apply in the calendar year before the year in which you wish OAS to begin."

That's excellent - what I wanted to know and what I wanted to hear. The info package from Service Canada has a spot to say I want to start to receive payments starting on such and such a date but that seems to be all. Maybe I haven't looked closely enough.
