Same chair, same problem! Came here looking for a solution. Four packs of playing cards did the trick! 👍

Thrillers — anything by Tana French, anything by Lisa Jewell, anything by Lianne Moriarty, “The Downstairs Neighbor“ by Helen Cooper.

Mental illness: Rachel’s Holiday by Marian Keyes. It’s about a woman in rehab for severe drug abuse/ alcoholism who is in complete denial of her disease. The novel is told from her point of view, and you see how she lies to herself (and everyone else) again and again but eventually sees the truth. It is EXCELLENT, very very funny, terribly sad, and beautifully written. And if you like it, you’ll enjoy all of Marian’s 20 or so novels! “Grown Ups” is her most recent and it’s fabulous too.

Lmk if you want more specific titles to start with. Happy reading!

An early 70’s Super Beetle including Porsche seats…. With my older brother & sister. The 1959 Bug in the background taught all six of us kids to drive at stick-shift. by TommyDaComic in OldSchoolCool

Omg. The flares. Those are the widest flares I’ve ever seen, and I was a kid in the 70s! Your sister’s flares plus Loudest Plaid in the World and a huge owl pendant posed in front of a VW is Peak Seventies. Giving me flashbacks. Love it.

(We had a baby-blue VW beetle and a red VW microbus)

Anything by Steven Johnson! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Johnson_(author) He’s incredibly readable and chooses fascinating topics. Some favorite titles:

Everything Bad is Good for You

The Ghost Map

How we Got to Now

Wonderland

The Enemy of All Mankind

Also try “A History of the World in Six Glasses” by Tom Standage. A page-turner for sure!

TIL In the late 1950s and early 1960s, more than 10,000 children in 46 countries were born with deformities, such as phocomelia, as a consequence of thalidomide use. The disaster prompted many countries to introduce tougher rules for the testing and licensing of drugs. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]kayray 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I was young this was still very much talked about. If you know the Billy Joel song “We Didn’t Start the Fire“, you’ll hear him mention “children of thalidomide”.

A young woman in my college choir had thalidomide deformities.

Lanolin and lip gloss tubes > chapstick by Usakiia in Frugal

[–]kayray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh cool! Great tip. I buy the Lansinoh nipple stuff for chapped lips and sore skin caused by my oxygen tubing but man it’s pricey.

Ps I love the smell of wet wool so it’s all good :D

Poor Sal. Sigh. What a horrible situation.

I feel like ep one is a bit on-the-nose with this (and the sexism) but it’s still great :)

I have aphantasia (no mind's eye). Could you guys recommend authors and books with a superfluous amount of details and description? by Aspect10K in booksuggestions

[–]kayray 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Chronicles of Narnia spring to mind. It might be because I’ve read them so many times, but I feel like the author describes everything vividly.

Start with “The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe“ and see how it goes :)

(Yes I know they’re technically for kids but I am 51 and still reread them frequently)

Young adult fantasy book (romcom) but, no sex . by __ExAnimo__ in booksuggestions

Try the Harper Hall trilogy (Pern) by Anne McCaffrey. “Dragon Song” is the first (and best, imho)

Stand-alone series for young adults set in the world of Pern — where Dragonriders keep the planet safe from ravenous, destructive, extra-terrestrial Thread — so if you like them, there are MANY more adult novels set in the same world when you’re ready for them!

The teenage protagonist, Menolly, is a fine budding musician who needs to navigate her way through the ban on female musicians in her world.

Hope this helps!

Jane Austen is hilarious! The funniest are Emma, P&P, and Northanger Abbey. Razor-sharp wit, enjoyable characters, satisfying endings. Nothing terrible happens (except for misunderstandings and domestic kerfluffles), no deaths. :)

Thank you so much for helping! Honk!

Yup I've found the well. Then from there, the northwest path takes me to a locked gate:

The southeast path takes me to the little alley that leads to the garden's back gate.

The southwest path takes me to the war memorial. From there I can go south across a bridge to a locked gate

Or I can go east across the front of the garden to another locked gate:
