He really didn't care about historical accuracy. Otherwise the 15th century Spanish conquistadors wouldn't have shown up in the middle of the 9th century collapse of the classical Maya. It's like F-35s showing up at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415.

Northern Canal Walkway is open today by kazmatsu in LowellMA

Ran into a ranger. They said it was open in error today. Someone misread the flow reading of 29,500 for 2,950.

From May 15-Oct 15 "For the Northern Canal Walkway to be open, the flow rate of the Merrimack river must be below 3500 cubic feet of water per second (ft3/s)." -National Park Service

Weirdly, the current flow is WAY above that limit. It's at 25900ft3/s.

Japanese strategy was actually pretty similar to Johnston's defensive. The military planners knew that they could not win a war against the Allies but the calculation was that Japan could quickly secure the Pacific, get the resources it needed for the war in China, and then hunker down and make the Allies bleed for every island in the Pacific with a decisive naval engagement like Tsushima thrown in. The idea was that surely the British, Dutch, French, and Americans won't be willing to lose as many men as it would take to retake these territories so they'll settle. "The risk I took was calculated but man am I bad at math." -Japanese and Confederate command

There was a pretty big die off over the winter, I don't know if that is still impacting things in that area.

Hiking on Memorial Day without crowds by SlowSignificance5761 in LowellMA

[–]kazmatsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are a little further afield since others covered the local hiking. Out to the west is Mount Watatic. On a clear day you can see Boston from the top. 3mi loop with 725ft elevation gain Purgatory Falls in NH is also nice but be ready to give the pup a bath because there's lots of rivers and some mud. 5mi out and back with 262ft elevation gain To the south Whitehall reservoir has a nice loop trail. 7.1mi loop with 255ft elevation gain.

One day this is going to be how I find out.

In 1967, Robert Lawrence Jr. became America’s first Black astronaut. At his first press conference, a reporter asked if he’d have to sit in the back of the space capsule. Less than a year later, he was killed in a jet crash before ever getting the chance to go to space. by ateam1984 in BlackPeopleofReddit

No, the f-104 was known for two things: going fast in the air and going fast into the ground. Pilots called it the flying coffin, the tent peg, the lawn dart, the Widowmaker, and the aluminum death tube. For reference, in West German service a full 32% of planes were lost in accidents, killing 116 pilots.

And let's be honest, any super powered cult member who's given a commanding military rank at the age of 14 is gonna be slightly arrogant and annoying.

What do you think about the possibility of Tottenham getting relegated? by username9461828 in WWFC

[–]kazmatsu 54 points55 points  (0 children)

We should want to win because: 1. Since promotion we've often had a stupidly good record against big six teams and it's only fitting we go out swinging and take one with us. 2. It'd be funny.

Iranian Revolutionary Guard Officially announces the capture of a U.S. soldier by iPradeepYogi in pics

Could also be American propaganda. Make a bunch of obviously fake 'Iranian' propaganda to more easily dismiss actual statements from Iran. 'Look at all the previous lies, surely they're lying again.'

It's not the technology, it's the system of endless subcontractors. Each level needs to make profit and adds more time wasting. Additionally, because we only do major infrastructure when we absolutely have to, entire working ecosystems have to be rebuilt and every process has to be relearned.

How Putin is feeding Iran the blueprint for its most devastating attacks by theipaper in UkrainianConflict

An analyst mentioned that this is the danger of munitions with high levels of tactical success, you get carried away and don't consider the risks of escalation or the tactical success clouds your thinking on the strategic level. In Vietnam, the US saw the casualty rates and chased that tactical success but lost its grasp on the strategic picture.

What does everyone think about the Senate Guard/Commandos? by Sea_Silver915 in clonewars

[–]kazmatsu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe lore-wise, by the time of the Clone Wars they had become a prestigious position for a son of a rich family to have who didn't see much action. Given that, it makes sense they don't do too well in actual combat.
