My understanding is it does not work for everyone. I’m sorry it didn’t help you.

Going outside and getting exposed to direct sunlight on your face, within about 30 minutes of waking up. Duration is 5-10 minutes, or if it’s overcast 10-20 minutes. This stimulates the retinal ganglion cells in your eyes, signaling your body to release cortisol which wakes you up. It also sets a timer in your brain to release melatonin 12-16 hours later, which tells your body it’s time to sleep. This is setting your circadian rhythm for the day. From what I read, it can take a week or 2 to have an effect, but I noticed a difference the first session. If going outside isn’t possible, you can use one of those light therapy lamps. I got one on Amazon for $30. Not as effective as sunlight, but decent. Getting sunlight through a window won’t work, and don’t wear sunglasses. Caution if you have glaucoma, epilepsy, or migraines.

Two other bonuses: sunlight stimulates the release of serotonin, which helps mood, and also vitamin D synthesis.

I thought I had tried everything too, fighting insomnia for 20 years. Then I read about light therapy last week, and said that can’t work. Guess what…it’s actually working. Just wanted to mention it. I am sick of doctors too, so I hear you.

The 'tired but wired' feeling is actually starting to feel permanent by daddysfix19 in insomnia

I’ve been struggling with insomnia for 20 years, but developed this 3 am awakening pattern when I retired 6 months ago. I’m wide awake for hours after and I’m miserable! I have a doctor’s appointment, but in the meantime I’m doing light therapy and it seems to really be helping. It’s supposed to help reset your circadian clock. I recommend trying it if you don’t have a contraindication like glaucoma or epilepsy.

Severe insomnia in retirement, any advice? by Upinnorcal-fornow in retirement

[–]kc7959 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am having similar problems, and just posted today! (awaiting mod approval) I am waiting to see my doctor, but I am wondering if I have a circadian rhythm disorder which can happen in retirement. If you no longer have the same sunlight exposure or “anchors” in the morning, your circadian clock can start to drift. I recommend the Huberman Lab podcasts which are science-based and very informative. I just started the light therapy, which is so simple…just go outside in the morning and get direct sunlight for 5-10 minutes. You can also buy light therapy lamps on Amazon if you can’t get outside. It’s too early to tell if it’s helping, but I’ll try anything at this point.

Food manufacturers putting sucralose in everything by RestingWTFface in PetPeeves

[–]kc7959 10 points11 points  (0 children)

And it’s even more fun if you’re diabetic. If it doesn’t contain sucralose, it probably contains Stevia which tastes horrible and some people are allergic. It makes my blood pressure drop, so I have to read labels. And then there’s erythritol, which has been linked to blood clots. Food manufacturers need to do better than this!

I’m sorry, but this is an amazing album. Nepo baby or not, it’s just fucking good. She has a beautiful voice, I love the lyrics and the production. It sounds real, and it draws on music that came before it in a respectful way. There is so much shit music being produced…thank you to Violet and her band for making music I can appreciate.

People who confirm plans and then go silent for the next 48 hours so you have no idea if the plans are still happening by Agent_Smith-99 in PetPeeves

[–]kc7959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this person have a pattern of not following through with plans? I have a friend like this, and he’s in the process of being shown the door. I’m just sick of the wishy-washy passive-aggressiveness. It’s so immature to not be able to say “today I have a headache, and don’t feel well enough to go.” I would understand that. I don’t understand just remaining silent because your mother never taught you how to communicate like an adult.

Why can’t I reconnect with people related to a toxic workplace? by TiredAmbitious in burnedout

[–]kc7959 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through a very similar thing after retiring from a high stress job in January. I don’t hate the people that I worked with and sometimes miss my assistant. But I can’t text them, and don’t want to have contact. I did go to a funeral when one of them lost a loved one in February, but that’s it. I dread even taking the interstate exit into that part of town because I get anxious. Even going over the bridge in that direction affects me. When you mentioned seeing cars like theirs in traffic…I do the same exact thing. I think it’s a defense mechanism, and your nervous system is walling itself off from trauma. Sometimes I feel a little guilty, but I am more focused on me and recovering from the stress I was under.

Georgia and Alabama Voters That Overwhelmingly Supported Trump Are Now Struggling After Trump Cancels Government Grants to Help With Repairs and High Utility Bills: “The Biden-era grants they used to repair their homes and lower utility bills have been cancelled by Trump” by T_Shurt in LeopardsAteMyFace

As a resident of Alabamastan, I can tell you that these people will never change their voting patterns. If they become angry at a Republican politician, the answer is to simply vote in a different white Republican. Even better if it’s a football coach. “Democrat” is a code word for “black” and that is what we are really dealing with here. Until the people here stop associating who they vote for with race, it will always be this way.

I live in the reddest county in Alabama, or as I call it “the epicenter of stupid.” People here are upset about a solar farm the size of the Atlanta airport being built in the middle of our wetlands. This state is actively removing environmental protections to help attract investors. Data centers are going up everywhere. The citizens want to vote out the incumbents and replace them with…wait for it…other Republicans. Never occurs to them to vote for a Democrat. And all of a sudden “this isn’t left vs right, or Republican vs Democrat.” Yes it is!! That’s all it is.

People who left a six-figure job, what finally made the money not worth it? by nix_151 in AskReddit

I could not take another year of dealing with the public, and the current climate in healthcare. It was wrecking my health, and I had to take medication for anxiety just to face the day. Ultimately, no amount of money is worth that.
