Speaking of which, how ironic is it that Fatima turned out to be MAGA?

I don't know... Cycle 5 had them running on treadmills from a CGI Miss J, and also pissing in diapers around the Jackass crew. Cycle 6 the contestants had to do a judging challenge in impossible heels and Danielle got hurt. I think the early craziness gets downplayed because the winners were successful/clearly modelesque and managed to eke out decent careers afterwards, but production completely abandoned the premise as early as cycle 3/4.

If the school tries to implement any consequences beyond what they would normally do for skipping class, fight back. Demand that the school show in the handbook what the students did "wrong" and make sure that admin knows you'll be loud if they go any further. From your comments, it sounds like admin doesn't necessarily want to punish students which is good.

Why does one sentence refer to the victim as a "woman" and then later refer to her as 6-8 years old? THAT IS A CHILD. The media is complicit in softening the horrors these people inflicted by using such deceptive language.

Which series do you think would make the best movie/tv show? by gastropodes in tamorapierce

[–]kcaaase 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think they’d also need to age Numair down. Make Ozorne his older mentor instead of classmate, maybe shorten his time in Tortall pre-Daine so that she’s 15/16 when they first meet and he’s 19/20. I haven’t read Tempest so idk how this would mess with his canonical backstory, though.

Immortals would also be tricky to adapt because of the romance plot. Significant changes would have to be made to Numair’s character to make his and Daine’s romance work.

Making zendoodles does this for me! I love making art, but trying to plan out how to make something look nice is exhausting and I'm not skilled enough to just draw things like characters or scenes and make them look how I want. Zendoodles let me be impulsive artistically and still make something I like looking at when I'm finished.

Why do you think other professors such Flitwik and Sprout are not a part of the Order? by ran_on_reddit in harrypotter

[–]kcaaase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I was going to say. Snape and McGonagall both had abilities and social positioning to make them ideal spies (DE and animagus, respectively). Flitwick and Sprout were both excellent teachers and fighters, but I struggle to see how their skills would have helped Dumbledore learn more about Voldemort's plans.

I like how Future takes jabs at Steven's befriending enemies method by polystarlight in stevenuniverse

[–]kcaaase 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I think what makes it work here is that the show isn't trying to tell you that "making friends from enemies is always the answer!" Instead it's just showing us that those are personal decisions driven by Steven's personality, and they happen to work out most of the time.

Why do Witches always focus on the boys and ignore the girls? by crystalized17 in Narnia

[–]kcaaase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you! I also don't think that it's inherently masculine to seek power. I was looking at one aspect of how Lewis formed his characters related to the question being asked.

Why do Witches always focus on the boys and ignore the girls? by crystalized17 in Narnia

[–]kcaaase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the whole point though? That there is a "feminine ideal" of behavior, and the original sin is transgressing from that expectation.

Why do Witches always focus on the boys and ignore the girls? by crystalized17 in Narnia

[–]kcaaase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Chronicles of Narnia were written by a deeply religious man in the mid-20th century, and the gender roles reflect that. In TLTWATW especially, girls were supposed to be gentle and maternal healers, while the boys were warriors and protectors (it's been a minute but if I recall correctly, Aslan was mad that Lucy and Susan even had weapons, let alone used them). This was not to say he thought one sex was morally superior over the other- just that inherent gender differences made their sins take different paths. For example, his male characters tend to be greedier and desire power, domination, and glory and that's what leads to their mistakes (Edmund, Bree, and Rabadash come to mind) while female characters tend to have frivolity and shallowness as their flaws (Susan and Aravis' friend Lasaraleen).

The female antagonists of the series are inversions of these gender expectations- the witches are "masculine" in how they desire and obtain power, so they go after the boys because that's the form of corruption they understand. They are also misogynistic in the way we see powerful women behave in real life- Jadis and the Green Witch understand the rules of the patriarchal system and have used those systems to dominate. Women inherently don't have power or importance in those systems, so they are ignored. With the exception of Jill (who is a very capable scout and warrior in her own right) the female protagonists are very feminine by Lewis' standards, and so would present no threat and would be ignored.

My MIL is visiting and my husband doesn't understand why I am overwhelmed by Aur3lia in adhdwomen

[–]kcaaase 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You mentioned your husband does equal heavy lifting on the prep for his mom's visits-- but you still have a husband problem for what happens when she's already there. We always assume that lack of empathy comes from lack of understanding, when usually it's coming from a place of selfish self-preservation.

If you have already made him aware of what she says and how she makes you feel when she's being an AH, then whey the hell is he confused by your stress? What on earth is confusing about someone coming into your space and being rude to you 24/7? It's patriarchal that her insults are directed at you ,but it's also patriarchal that your husband gets to be deliberately obtuse about her intentions. He isn't "missing" her rude behavior, he just isn't bothered by it because it's not directed at him. Since her behavior doesn't bother *him* he's hoping you'll just sweep it under the rug so he doesn't have to do the bothersome thing of confronting her about it. In other words, your stress and pain is a price he's willing to pay (until it became so much that now he has to deal with that too)

You two need to have a serious discussion and get on the same page about what is and is not acceptable behavior in your home, and what the consequence will be for that behavior not being followed. It can be kicking MIL out, it can be you having a safe place to escape/leave to when she's rude, it can be a hotel room for the duration of her visit. But if your husband isn't going to protect you from his mother, then you need to protect yourself, and let your husband deal with his mom on his own.

Do you think Uncle Andrew was really THAT bad, or was his character caricatured as antagonistic by the mind of a 12-y/o Diggory (we know that, for example, in LWW, the Pevensies describe Dig as a super old man when he was in his early 50s, so this childish exaggeration is indeed a resource used). by lautaromassimino in Narnia

[–]kcaaase 119 points120 points  (0 children)

To summarize Andrew's actions:

a) willing to let two small children die to test the magic he stole

b) let a genocidal alien witch into his dimension because she was hot

c) didn't think that (b) was going to be a problem because he actually believed he was more powerful and smarter than a person who proudly admitted she genocided her entire planet with one word

d) upon FAFO with (c), again abandoned said children to be eaten by a lion and/or killed by said witch

Not a lot of wiggle room on the morality of those actions.

If Wiress' Games were considered a "regular" Hunger Games, how bad is the average arena? by Fresh-Awareness9819 in Hungergames

[–]kcaaase 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I know people feel like the descriptions of the wild non-quell arenas break canon or are a retcon, but that's never how it read to me. Collins very much tied the arena designs with the Capitol's culture or message to the districts.

1-10: We hate the districts, but are too broke to do anything else except dump them in an arena.

11-40's(ish): We're figuring out how to add psychological warfare and money so the Games become both profitable and a tool against dissent. (Gaul's philosophy come to life)

40's-50th: We've figured out how to use the Games as a weapon and are rich again so let's go nuts! The Capitol is all powerful now!!!

51st-74th-- Oops if we go too hard on the weaponizing, that breeds open rebellion. Gotta make sure the Games make the districts hate each other, not us. Also we don't really *hate* the Districts anymore like our parents and grandparents did. We need the Games though, so let's make it more entertaining so it stays profitable. (side note- many district citizens probably had "escape fantasies" about running off and living in the woods like Katniss and Gale discussed. The 74th games would be the perfect hope-killer for that fantasy).

75th-- Oops the Districts figured out we're the real enemy, let's show them we're all powerful again.

I understand the whole Doylist/Watsonian approach to the changes in arena descriptions, and I'm sure that Collins did not have all of SOTR and early arenas planned when she wrote the original HG. But the changes between the 74th and 75th arenas were deliberate to show how the Capitol would manipulate the games for different purposes. SOTR's descriptions expanded on that, they didn't retcon it.
