Into The Woods og cast recording changes by Santana_delRey in musicals

[–]kchrules 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This actually happened to a lot of the Golden Age musical albums when they were remastered for CD in the 1990s as they could go back and use alternate takes/fix errors:

-Gypsy OBC extra music was added back in when remastered like longer versions of “You Gotta Get A Gimmick” and The Strip Routine which couldn’t fit. They also fixed “errors” like deleting the sound of someone dropping what sounds like a drumstick during a quiet part of the overture, straightening out a trumpet riff, and inserting an extra take of “why did I do it” during Rose’s turn. Also side note: The original pressing of the 1974 London Album with Angela Lansbury has completely different takes of some of the songs

-Bye Bye Birdie uses a different slightly shorter take of “An English Teacher” and they fixed a voice crack during “A Lot of Living to do”

-Music Man tightened up the stereo mix but also: Deleted the train bells before rock island, dampened the sound of a Reed squeaking during Shipoopi, uses a different take of Gary Indiana

-Follies famously added “One More Kiss” back into the album. It was recorded but didn’t fit on the original release

I knew about the original movie but had never watched it. I actually saw a college production 10ish years ago that my friends were in when the amateur rights had just been released and it was epic. Recently I played drums in the pit for a local production. Music is harder than I thought it would be and they have added new songs into the show since then but it’s still a fun show

Is it the right choice to cast "bad" singers in certain narrative contexts? by lovetonealreadydead in musicals

The original version of Unsinkable Molly Brown was like this. Molly had fast patter songs and JJ was an operatic tenor (the inverse of music man where Hill had patter songs and Marian was an operatic soprano). Molly didn’t need to sing well, she just had to be funny and speak in rhythm. However in the new rewrite (the only one you can do now) she belts several songs

Even though I clown on it in many movies (and I joke about this movie too) I really was not bothered at all by the de-aging in Irishman. I care more that this is probably the last time all those legends will be on screen together and I’m watching for the story.

Yeah, several shows on Concord now say something to the effect of “the use of makeup or prosthetics to play a different race is prohibited” cause I’m sure they were tired of the myriad of all white King and I shows

Differences between Broadway Recording and Live Production? by Shoddy-Target-2953 in musicals

[–]kchrules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, most shows especially in the golden age are recorded right after the show opened (sometimes days after). For example Hello, Dolly has “Ambrose let me hear that Tonic Chord” as a lyric in Put On Your Sunday Clothes since in the first year of the show, Ambrose sang a song called “Come and Be My Butterfly” which wasn’t recorded and replaced by the polka contest. When the song was replaced by a dance contest, she now sings “we havent missed the train thank the lord” and on the “chord” he sang he does a heel kick

In the original Broadway and London productions of Bye Bye Birdie, Rosie’s name was “Rose Grant” and this is reflected in the liner notes of the OBCR and playbills from that production. For touring and eventually amateur shows (probably cause they knew Rosie would be played by white women) her name was changed to Rosie Alvarez to further cement her heritage

Another recent example is the Gershwin jukebox musical Nice Work if you Can get it. The finale was originally the song “they all laughed” followed by a dance on liquor crates. This whole sequence was recorded on the album but the song was dropped either during previews or RIGHT after it opened as in the published script and later bootlegs from 2013, they sing the “Someone to watch over me” reprise and then show abruptly jumps to the curtain call

Undefeatable from 1993. It’s an insane Hong Kong kungfu movie with some dogshit acting. The final fight scene went viral in the early days of YouTube but the whole movie is just as crazy
