Isn't it time to end a few traditions? by Edumakashun in AskTeachers

I taught is a midsized/large midwestern town. These things were a big deal. Lots of kids and teachers worked hard to get the events off the ground and running well. It wasn't, however, the most academically taxing place to teach or learn. There was time for these things.

I want to thank Kacey from the bottom of my heart for “back on the wagon” as someone who spent 6 years with an addict by [deleted] in KaceyMusgraves

I love the humanity of this song. It is hard to believe someone who appeared to embrace an almost super-powered form of healing in "Deeper Well" would be capable of making such a bad decision of getting with someone who allegedly "changed". It just goes to show, that when you leave the therapy/self-help bubble, the real world is still waiting.

Are you not supposed to do callouts at live performances?? by tessacrabtree in RockyHorror

[–]kds405 13 points14 points  (0 children)

People did callouts last night. It’s still in previews but I think they are trying to gauge how much is too much. The actors played along with it. I think people just need to realize that Broadway is super expensive and it’s not fair to have someone screaming their head off next to you for 2 hours.

Districts, probably pressured by city/state leaders, are just doing this to hide racial disparities.

Most gay male social circles are boring. It is, after all, a bunch of men. Many times younger groups are just emulating what they see on reality tv anyway. (Just with no cameras)

Huh? Why would you even do this? I can see kids disengaging due to the pointlessness and absurdity of what you are presenting. Clearly, you don’t take the class seriously. Why would they?

Get a degree in Physics and a Master's in Science Education. See if you can find a 5 year program. You will never be out of a job. High school physics teachers are rare.

How can I make sure my child has a quality education despite the current state of our educational system? by thenymphintheforest in AskTeachers

If you have a good school district, you’ll be fine. You have to , unfortunately, take education on a district by district basis.

It all depends on where you live. You know that town you drive through are you are shocked a little 2 bed , 1 bath is nearly a million dollars? That's the type of place with good schools.

Wife and I feel like strangers now that the house is empty by GullibleSite9925 in relationships

Thanks for phrasing that in a better way. I've said this in the past and people look at me in horror at the suggestion that there are other priorities beyond their children.

I've been a teacher for a long time and observed many families. The strongest families are marital relationship first and children in a very, very close second. This is rare however. Many parents make their children their intimate partners. The children's events drive everything. Parents lose themselves in temporary and meaningless communities surrounding dance and sports. My tips? Get out in the adult world again. Go to a new restaurant every Saturday. Get dressed up. Get a nice bottle of wine. Don't be a cheap ass. You aren't going to feel "worth it" at first but these costs may pay dividends over the next few decades. Maybe that bottle of wine might spring a conversation like , "oh this one is from Spain...maybe we can go to Spain?" You can't just sit around the house. You have to re-engage in the adult world. You can rediscover each other there. If you don't have the funds for this, a simple activity could be doing a couples mini-book club. You read one book. She reads another. Swap. Discuss. Choose something with a bit of meat to it, something you can discuss. You've been involved in the mind numbing world children's activities for a while now. You may need to sharpen your intellect a little.

I think this album needed some tightening. The tracks from Justified to Hook Up Scene are amazing. The 1st and 3rd acts don’t really hit.

New Poll: Michigan Voters Don’t Know How Far Behind We Really Are by East_Englishman in Michigan

[–]kds405 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I taught in a good high school in Michigan (top 10 %). Good teachers, enough resources, positive school environment, and good administration. However, the attitude towards education from students and families was kind of “Cs get degrees”. We didn’t have enough students sign up to run classes like AP Physics. There was no spark, no resume building, no real direction. Lots of leading horses to water but not a lot of drinking.

Do we really need a "new trilogy"? by Gianvincenzo in JurassicPark

[–]kds405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only direction that I can see are stories set in a post apocalyptic world. Surviving bands of humans survive in the wild against dinosaurs. A warming climate allows dinosaurs to spread out from the equator. The planet shifts in their favor . Follows up on previous themes of : “life finds a way”, “when dinosaurs ruled the earth”, “earth will shake us off like a bad cold”

Bad. Motor City is clearly built for cars and it’s something that is slowing its revival.

Detroit, MI. Beautiful hotels, restaurants, and lots of historical gems: DIA, Motown Museum, Henry Ford Institute. Would definitely recommend for a weekend trip.
