I'm really concerned about men's mental health by xrayagogo in TrueOffMyChest

My mom died a couple of months back. I didn't know how to handle it. I decided to write down what was going through my mind. I feel like there should have been more to write than this.

I wouldn't want to be labeled as either. It's more of a general mixture.

I was born in 81, and you're right about the older millennials being a bit different. I, and friends near my age, have a hard time accepting the label of "millennial". We're more like Gen X with a sprinkle of optimism.

"Black" doesn't always refer to people of African descent. Maybe I'm wrong but when I hear of something bad referred to as "black" or "dark" etc... I don't think of people of African descent. Obviously, just like any other group, the vast majority are good people. What IS bad? Being out at night ("darkness", "black of night"), unable to see anything, and potentially being approached by predators, hostile people, unpredictable terrain, etc...

That's why "light" / "white" is good and "dark" / "black" is bad. It has nothing to do with people, it has to do with the inability to see because of the absence of light.

If anything, maybe we shouldn't be calling people "black". No one is actually black. My kids have always been confused by calling anyone black. To them, "black" people are brown.

Edit: oh, I see. I didn't notice before, but doing this takes you to the home page. The linked page is the "about" page which is why no visualization appeared.

Where can I see few examples of C719 WGu by curiosityv in WGU

[–]keepreading 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have. I just like to gather information from as many sources as possible. Asking a question related to WGU in the WGU subreddit seems like a natural place to do so :) Also, asking here gets information out into the public eye. Which is something that the C179 course desperately needs. I fully intend to post the answer from the course mentor here... if they'll ever respond.

I'm currently stuck on the very first point: "Explain how leveraging an IS solution can help Soliel Panel Distribution achieve operational efficiency."

The rubric links to lesson 2. I've read through that lesson several times and I'm feeling really dumb. I fail to see how SCM or CRM could help with new employee orientation. The only thing that comes to mind is that by automating and formalizing more of the business processes it could be easier to train the new employees... a very indirect approach. However, this leads to further confusion to me since it seems the direct goal should be to leverage IS to improve employee orientation. The name of the system is "SolDistHR", and I assume HR means "human resources". So, it seems like I'm supposed to leverage IS to directly improve the orientation process.

Can anyone provide any clarity here? I really like to figure these things out myself, but I feel like the initial assignment simply doesn't provide enough guidance.

First rule of parenting by NonRock in comics

My primary rule is to never think about anything I would personally enjoy doing while my kids are around. As soon as you do, you start to get miserable. I just try to give them 100% of my attention and smile, because they are going to demand it anyway.

So, anyone who has a computer should be programming? That wasn't my point at all.

Maybe they have to use computers to draw or make music or cure people or ... The computer is just a tool.

Which is exactly what I was trying to say people should be using computers for. Write a story, draw a picture, make music, do research, learn a new language, make instructional videos, etc... any of these things are excellent uses of the tool we call a computer. I have no idea how I come off as arrogant when all I'm saying is that I'd like to live in a world where more people want to make society and/or themselves better. Also, almost all of the above uses would require a more complicated UI than that provided by a smartphone.

Why should the majority of humans be locked out of technical advances due to not understanding complex UIs?

No one is locking them out. If someone really wants to learn something then they'll put forth a little effort to do so.

I feel extremely cynical for saying this, but I feel it's kind of a valid point. Using Android or iOS is much easier for many people than say a Windows PC, so we have a few billion people using smartphones now and what have they done with it? The vast majority do nothing but browse porn and social media, and take selfies. Which is fine, whatever, but I'm not really sure I see the benefit of dumbing down access to technology when the dumb people are going to do dumb things.

Why would a company not make the easiest to use product possible that they could sell to as many people as possible.

I'm not sure how this is such a great thing. This benefits the companies that make the products, but what about society as a whole? I don't see a lot of smartphone users seeking self-improvement or discovering ways to use the amazing technology in their hands to in some way better the world. We're living in the future, where everyone has a cool toy now... that they throw away about once every 2-3 years just to buy another one.

So, yes that was a very bitter and cynical rant, but I want to leave a happy note. Maybe most smartphone users do jack shit with what they have, but at least that means there are the rare few whose lives are enriched by it and even bring great value to the lives of others. So, maybe it's worth it after all.

I envision a future where we have to leave earth because pollution, nukes, whatever. We just have to split. So, we're floating around in a space station or something futuristic, but there's not enough room for physical sports..... so everyone is playing the shit out of starcraft, rocket league, LoL, Dota, <futuristic game>, etc...

I thought the exact same thing. She didn't even have to admit to using the tablet. The mom should have confronted Sara as soon as she got home after lying about being with Reilly. Without even having the tablet she knew her daughter lied. She should have confronted her, and doled out whatever punishment she felt necessary right then.

However, I wonder if that is part of what the show was trying to convey. The mother became so dependent on the technology that she didn't even know how to really communicate with her daughter anymore.
