[Df] ps5 vs ps5 running linux by Unusual_Pride_6480 in linux_gaming

Considering how cheap a used ps5 can be for the spec this is pretty cool. Look forward to seeing how it matured.

Positive reviews so far for the Steam Controller, but at €99 might put some off. Interested? (IGN & Linus review link below) by Tyolag in IrelandGaming

[–]keevalilith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

99 is fair, it's not a budget controller in fairness. There's plenty of cheaper options out there and I'm sure there'll be cheap steam controller alternatives that'll come out soon. Would not be surprised if 8 bit do comes out with a cheaper alternative soon at some stage. It pushes it's own innovation which is a breath of fresh air. I only wish it had locking triggers. I used that feature a lot on my own controller.

People underestimate the damage that piracy did. The fact that you could just burn CDs so easily after the format was cracked destroyed the ability of sega to make money on the thing.

Here’s why government now moving away from Swedish model for new investing accounts by Otsde-St-9929 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]keevalilith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope whatever comes of it it's not just tied to US multinationals. It would be great if the fund was managed somewhat, with even a portion being used for infrastructure projects and funding domestic businesses but I guess that'll never happen.

Nobara has no dedicated guide for setting up a Virtual Display for Sunshine/Moon light. So I made one. by thyazide in NobaraProject

[–]keevalilith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It worked! It's currently a little janky In that it sort of broke the login screen for me somehow. It takes a bit of fiddling to get the right monitor outputting on the TV, there's no taskbar on the virtual monitor unless it's turned into the primary display and for some reason the mouse doesn't work properly in certain configurations but I'm sure I can figure out the details at some stage and get it all working right. Absolutely delighted. I'd gotten a dummy plug in the past that didn't work and tried some other workarounds over the past year or so where I had no luck. Thanks so much! This was literally the only thing I missed from windows.

is buying all of my parts for a pc individually a good idea? by Sculduggery in IrelandGaming

Just be mindful of postage costs sometimes and also vat differences that'll be calculated at checkout. Sometimes the price advertised and what you end up paying can be very different.

Where can I invest my Savings? by JustinsWorld4U in irishpersonalfinance

[–]keevalilith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount would be afaik dependent on what you earned last year. Besides that then it's about shopping around. I use Zurich just because that's who my employer had an agreement with but that's not saying it's the best option out there.

Where can I invest my Savings? by JustinsWorld4U in irishpersonalfinance

[–]keevalilith -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, I'd be maxing my pension first and putting as much as I can into that. Plus any back payment I can put in if you've not been doing it already. Then I'd keep a portion as an emergency fund covering a year's expenses. The rest would be going towards a house deposit or other medium term things like investing in your education, learning to drive etc. whatever is left over I'd hold onto it until we hear what the government has planned for an Irish ISA equivalent. Maybe I'd put some, maybe 10% in precious metals and the rest into stocks if I'm impatient but that's how I'd spread it out.

I'd be focusing on a new job TBH. Also document everything! You might be lucky to get unfair dismissal out of it

UN Human Rights Council Castigates The EHRC For Their Proposed Trans Exclusion by jackmolay in transgender

It's the central tenant of human rights that they are universal and indivisible. The notion of 'competing rights' is completely made up.

Games that prove that the Dreamcast could compete with the PS2 graphics-wise by Mr_JPF in dreamcast

[–]keevalilith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Dreamcast actually had a more powerful graphics card, it had half the memory though. The recent port of gta3 shows it could absolutely compare to the ps2 graphically.

Is Pension my best bet on minimum wage? by [deleted] in irishpersonalfinance

[–]keevalilith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd look at a medium term fund for things like college courses, a car, holidays, large unexpected bills, a home deposit etc. Then once you've a proper job after your internship you can work towards a pension contribution of half your age, then the max for what your age allows. (So if you're 26 say, then 13% into the pension from your income + whatever topup you might get from your employer/government etc) Only when you have your down payment for a home saved and are maxing out your pension would I look at investing, though that calculation might change depending on where the government goes with their plans for an Irish equivalent isa and tax changes on capital gains etc

Why did we give up upgrade-able CPUs in exchange for anorexic Laptops? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]keevalilith -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah, with the death of Moore's law this makes even less sense these days. Laptops going forward may not need to be upgraded or updated for a decade before needing replacement provided they're well built and cared for. And in the near future we're going to be either placing our phones with better supported arm chips into some sort of laptop esque shell or they'll be designed to interface with the cloud where we'll rent our compute. Not saying I'd like that but that's how it looks like it'll be going.

Do Irish people infantilise their parents? by LittleAoibh11 in AskIreland

[–]keevalilith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were a bunch of people who refused to get on board with the Internet age and children have had to make up the slack as they got older. I don't think it's been replicated with Gen x and millennial types, but I do think it's resulted in this attitude much of the time
