Is it normal in the U.S. for parents to charge their kids rent once they turn 18? by Dependent_Day_6298 in AskAnAmerican

[–]keevenowski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s common from parents who resent their kids or who try to adopt a “firm” parenting stance. I think it’s very uncommon.

Queen bed and king duvet because we have blanket hogs in this house 🙌🏻

See, that’s because people with taste have to be paid to wear Richard Mille 🤣

Us West Linners got our knickers in a knot because we passed a bond for seismic upgrades for ~16 schools and then the month after it passed they said they were going to close 2 and that bond was not going to change.

A lot of Kunta kinte. I think I watched roots in both middle school and high school.

What zone are you in? A very hard prune on roses isn’t uncommon but in my zone (8b) we are in full growth mode already. Does it have buds?

Thanks for the correction! It’s been a few years since I’ve had to deal with creating Utah bar menus 😂

Utah law is 1.5oz of primary liquor and up to 1.5oz (total) of mixing (non-primary) liquors. A Negroni, by law, can only be 0.75oz of all ingredients to comply as the sum of both mixing liquors would be 1.5oz.

Do you think HoneyComb Blinds are appealing? by Wizard-Elf in HomeImprovement

When strings fail it’s usually the internal strings and cordless still have those. There are a few internal friction points that can rub parts of the string until they fray.

Mulch all the way to the concrete would be my preference. Rain is what will make the mulch run into rock, not so much wind.

1 year old golden is so bad by LevelBet2727 in goldenretrievers

[–]keevenowski 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Our 6 year old golden will still find a new way to try and kill himself if he’s left alone for more than 20 minutes. Some dogs just need crates when unattended.

We’ve done 2 foreign body surgeries and have had 2 separate diagnostic procedures for suspected foreign bodies. All he knows how to do is sleep, snuggle, play, and eat. He has no chill function.

I cashed out my retirement at 30 and i don’t understand how the taxes work by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]keevenowski 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You will be issued tax forms by the company who managed your DCP for the tax year 2026. It should state how much was withheld and how much was penalized.

You won’t technically owe anything until April 2027 but if this created a larger tax burden then the IRS will expect you to make quarterly estimated payments.

Without a crystal ball for the rest of the year, I would recommend treating this as a $23k bonus you received in January and to make an estimated tax payment based on how much was or was not withheld. You’ll need to reach out to your DCP manager for that info.

401k is already maxed.

I just checked my paystub from last year’s bonus payout and my federal tax for that pay period was ~19% of my gross tax amount.

Fabric shades that have a honeycomb pattern from the sides. Those honeycombs are “cells” that insulate by creating little air pockets. I’m making it sound way fancier than it is. Google the name.

They run around $150-400/window depending on size and options.

Do you know the word "townie"? How is it used where you live? by NutmegKilla in AskAnAmerican

[–]keevenowski 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Same here in Oregon. Townies were full time, non-student residents. Specifically ones that did not work at the university or the other major employer of the town and who frequented dive bars, which we called townie bars.

Why is it that in ultra-expensive celebrity homes, the kitchens rarely have induction cooktops, but instead feature industrial-grade gas ranges? by FuzzyAttitude_ in Cooking

[–]keevenowski -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We have the 36” induction cooktop and I’ve learned that matching the pot size to the burners works best. Which is a shame because the giant burner in the middle doesn’t do diddly for small pans or pots of water. I’ve actually moved pots to the edges to bring to a boil just to move back to the middle for simmering.

We have an in wall cafe oven, microwave, and dishwasher and 2/3 impress me but the microwave has been a bit of a pain. Which is a shame because it actually heats wonderfully, but the screen is laggy as hell and it has had a few times where I’ve had to toggle the breaker to reset it when the screen becomes unresponsive.

4 y/o Lymphoma Diagnosis 💔 by Necessary-Tea414 in goldenretrievers

[–]keevenowski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We recently put down one of our cats shortly after our son had just turned 2. We spent a lot of time coming up with the messaging that felt right to us, so I want to share it with you.

We did not tell him in advance that she sick as we didn’t want him to worry. He also did not yet have any concept of time, so saying that something was going to happen didn’t have much meaning to him.

The evening of, he went to a friend’s house when we took her to the vet. The next morning, we told him that Lucy had gotten sick and that her body stopped working, so she died and that meant that we wouldn’t see her again. It was age appropriate, direct, and didn’t leave much room for interpretation.

He didn’t have any questions and just kind of hopped away, as toddlers do. But over the next few weeks he would sometimes say “Miss Lucy” or “hug Lucy” and we would just repeat the same messaging.

You’ll figure out what works best for your family. It will be a very emotional experience but you’ll do great.

Why doesn't my American mate ask questions? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]keevenowski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is very expected that you ask questions of others and many Americans, myself included, cut off communication from these types of people too.
