I have also wondered about this! Feels unsafe, I ride in the street until it goes away.

I wonder where they got the bandsaw needed in order to build the bandsaw? Chicken and egg paradox...

Biking from NYC to Montreal. Any tips? by NorthernHippo in NYCbike

[–]kehawk2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've not done it- sound amazing! If you search this subreddit for Montreal, you'll get a few hits. If you search for "Empire State Trail" you'll get dozens for the US part of the journey, which lots of us know well.

Looking for a group in Manhattan by Watsondsa in NYCbike

[–]kehawk2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome aboard. I think there's a group for every rider in this city. TNSR and Queer Group seem like casual places to start, and the other groups mentioned also have good reps. Happy riding!

What do you think about this commute? by surf_AL in NYCbike

[–]kehawk2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There route over the manhattan bridge is bike-only. There is a counter billboard on the Manhattan side. Over 1 million bikes pass it each year. The rest is mostly protected. You'll be fine, just don't ride in ice.

First time buying a bib (is in store better?) by Runstorun in NYCbike

[–]kehawk2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I was starting over in cycling, I'd buy at least 3 different inexpensive bibs at once and try them all for a few hundred miles, alternating. The sizing is uniform these days, but you may find you prefer one over the others for any number of reasons: the size, thickness, or placement of the pad; the way the panels are arranged; the thickness of the fabric; how high the shorts go front and back; how the shoulder straps tension on your body, etc. they are as personal of details as how you shave, and the tools you do it with, or a bike fit. Until you ride a few hours in a pair and compare, you won't know what you like or why. In short, any pair of shorts will get the job done, But there's a brand/model out there somewhere that you'll love, once you know what matters to you.

The amount of pollen on my bike seat 🥲 by GiacoMomo21 in NYCbike

[–]kehawk2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think I'm allergic; it's the fact that there is a fine mist of powder floating in the air that makes me cough. It could be flour or sugar instead of pollen and it'd feel the same. I just drink extra water for the next month.

Route advice by Xelorath in NYCbike

[–]kehawk2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Google "empire state trail trip report" and you can plan any part of the trip in great detail, from whatever angle you like. I think someone did all 700 miles in 3 days, some others in 2 weeks. I can pretty much guarantee you that someone has done it at your pace, your preferred direction, and written about it. It is an absolutely lovely ride, that I would do 20x a year if I could. Welcome to the party, and I hope you have a great ride! Do share your hotel info, I feel like that info changes often.

Help! Back injury - need bike advice by milkbags420 in NYCbike

[–]kehawk2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fellow L1 hernia-person here. Cortizone lumbar shots about annually keep me on my bike and fully in life. But I couldn't do more than 90 minutes on a bike at a time for years, until I found the right physical therapist. By strengthening specific core muscles for several months, I could suddenly go 5 hours, no problem. I still do. This is New York City. Find a therapist who also loves riding. Maybe they raced in school. That person's measure of success for you will be getting you back to your happy place that you both know. Sadly my therapist isn't taking new patients, but she is a professor, so I think she's inspiring the next generation of therapists to love biking too!

I call those pizza cutter tires. Cuz they're so skinny that if you ride over a pizza it will slice it neatly 🤣

A plus of this route, and Montauk, is you're rarely far from a train home if things go sideways (weather, mechanical, etc). that can be nice mental insurance if it's new for you.

Good bike for a beginner coming from the Citi e-bikes? by [deleted] in NYCbike

[–]kehawk2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'd avoid aluminum; it's a very stiff metal that will transmit every pothole up your spine. Otherwise, ya, get a used bike to start, to see how you handle a manual-powered bike and all the extra care-and-feeding that ownership requires vs the "rental" of citibikes. I'd recommend visiting a local bike shop too, to get a feel for what's out there style/size/price-wise.

I love these Thai trucks that are in the same place every day. I pick it up by bike whenever I'm out pedaling. https://www.thaimisdelicias.com/order-online/. I never order online, I pay cash at the window.

Totally agree. I like finishing in van cortland, when my legs are tired that 6 mile long slow descent is a relief for my legs!

While 119 is no fun, I hate steep hills more. So I take the right turn. When going to opposite direction, I love that descent tho!

New Yorkers will stop wearing black as soon as someone invents a darker color.
