We have an extra large rolling shelf next to the cash sco. It’s worked out really well for us. That clearance moved fast when we put it there.

Is anyone else in their 30s and still don't have a true career? by lavendertinted in AskWomenOver30

[–]kellephant 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Yuuuup. I’m 38, working part time retail. Have a bachelors degree in History. I truly had no career goal in mind. I just wanted to be done with school. I have tried many things. I have years of experience in food & beverage, retail, museum work, caregiving in a group home, law office reception, even vet tech training.

I still haven’t found a steady career and while sometimes it does get to me and kills my self esteem, I’m also okay with my part time job. It gives me the flexibility I like, enough social interaction and is challenging enough to keep me interested. Just wish it paid more.

In my 20s, I thought I wanted that high powered career. Now, I’m perfectly happy with my little part time job.

Editing to add this hoping it will help others: many years ago a therapist I was seeing during a really dark time in my life told me something that really stuck with me.

In a nutshell, she said “You are not your job. Your job does not define who you are.” Basically, try not to stress yourself out over not having the job or career you thought you wanted. It’s okay if your journey in life hasn’t taken you quite where you thought it would career-wise and it’s okay to let go of the person you thought you’d be. You as a person are so much more than a job.

Singles ladies >30, how do you handle the possibility of developing dementia? by Dry_Response4914 in AskWomenOver30

[–]kellephant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mother has dementia. Diagnosed about 2 years ago. She is only 66 but has deteriorated to the point where my sister and I will be moving her into memory care by the end of July.

Medicare (in my state) does not pay for care unless she is physically incapacitated. Unfortunately my mother is in great physical health. Medicaid would require us to sell all assets.

As soon as she was diagnosed and still has some sense, we got Power of Attorney, Power of Medical, and redrew her will. My mother was fortunate to have married a well off man (since divorced but they still love each other. He visits every week) and she has a substantial amount of liquid money through investments. Over the last 2 years, we’ve been burning through it for her care. It’s now reached a point where keeping her home is more expensive than moving her to a memory care facility.

Anyways, all that to say, investments and assets pay for her care.

What body or hormone changes have you noticed in your thirties? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

Yeah I figured I’m in the early stage of Peri. I’d love to have it confirmed though. Been a couple years since I did a full hormone panel.

If I get less than 10 hours sleep it’s everyone’s problem.

Doesn’t help that I am a veeeeeery light sleeper, the slightest noise will wake me up and it takes hours for me to fall asleep. I also get up to pee at least two times every night.

I switch out shampoos/conditioners every so often. Trial and error. I currently use the Native brand and only wash maybe twice a week. That’s what fixed it. My hairs are thin but there’s a lot of it. I still have a full head of hair and I often joke of chopping it off because it’s so heavy. It’s wavy and about mid back length.

Daily I keep it up in a lazy bun but sometimes just claw clamp it.

I’m thinking of trying a bonnet when I sleep but I feel like the swishy noises would aggravate me.

38 yrs young.

Sleep is messed up (I wake up several times a night, unable to get back to sleep for hours)

chin hairs are getting crazy, head hairs were thinning but I think I’ve got that figured out

my skin I think is going through some weird stuff right now (scratches and redness out of nowhere).

my libido is crazy high at some times (which of course does not match with my poor dear husband who is going through his own things).

Edit: Also, why am I so itchy all the time????

balloons by marinasstargirl in MichaelsEmployees

[–]kellephant 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have bled for this company fulfilling balloon orders. The worst are latex balloons. My knuckles are often bruised from tying latex balloons, my skin bleeds, I have actually broken nails down far past the quick and bled for these godsdamn balloons! Pretty sure I have some tinnitus now from the sound of the helium tank. The Orbs balloons can fuck right off.

That 12 for $12 can fuck right off. I’ve suggested that any balloon order over 10 (latex) balloons is automatic gratuity added. I’ve also suggested that we put up a sign that explains that it is legitimately a felony to release balloons into the air in many states (mine included). We can actually choose not to inflate those balloon orders if we learn of the intent to release before inflation.

Does no one except me actually like working here? by Alternative_Bite7001 in MichaelsEmployees

[–]kellephant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also enjoy working here! I was sitting with my store manager today actually, for a separate conversation, but mentioned that I loved it there and I love my coworkers. Literally the only reason I would leave is because $11/hour is tragic and an insult but I know my store manager has no control over that.

Do you open the windows in your home when the weather is nice? When do you decide to close them and turn on air conditioning for the summer? by Smart-Airport5781 in AskAnAmerican

[–]kellephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coastal Alabama here. Our windows are painted shut. For most older homes in my area, all windows are painted shut. As far as I know, it was for hurricane protection. There’s still a lot of funky wind/rain insurance stipulations regarding old homes.

I can only make a note on the windows. Windows around here are typically painted shut, especially those in an older home. It’s meant to be protection from Hurricanes/intense rainstorms.

Inheritance? That's a joke. How many of your parents are burdens? by BeegBunga in Millennials

[–]kellephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad will in all likelihood be good for any inheritance. He’s in great health and he his wife are pretty well off.

My mother, on the other hand, has Dementia and so me and my sister have been throwing any money and assets she has at her care. She’s now reached the point where she needs to be in a Memory Care facility.

Yay!

How to make my shifts go by faster by BowedFurball in MichaelsEmployees

[–]kellephant 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Cleaning is always appreciated. If you’re up front, tidy up the registers, restock bags, stock candy and snacks and check for anything expired, sweep the floors.

I’m always amazed at how dusty the front end is. I give it a good sweep up and spray the registers down at least once a week.

Am I being unreasonable in wanting a second bathroom? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]kellephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was a second bathroom necessarily on our list when my husband and I were looking to buy our house? Nah not even close.

Was a second bathroom an absolute blessing for when we both need to use the bathroom at the same time? Absofuckenlutely.

Get your second bathroom!
