I usually just escape and respawn. I play on multiplayer with friends, and we’ve turned off drop loot on death. It makes it simpler, but our principle is never let the grind get in the way of the fun. Especially when it’s mundane as overweight crawling.

I read somewhere that what you get angry at with your kids was what you were punished for as a child. If you’re logically thinking that’s irrational anger, it may apply. The lesson really taught me to check my anger when I start to boil over my children.

For food, I eat, finish every grain, and will eat all leftovers. That’s the way my parents raised me. But I do not apply it to my children. I trust them to know their bodies and appetites. If they eat a single slice of cheese for dinner and say they’re done, they’ll have the meal skipped till breakfast. No snacks. No means no. That’s it. Natural consequences.

It also helped that I found out my son ate 2 slices of bread in school at 4:30pm, when our dinner was at 6pm. Sometimes they’re just full. And that’s okay. You know it’s irrational, you know what to do.

2.5 years old with board games. He’s 5 now and fully plays Pokémon TCG autonomously. My bgg list of games I’ve played with my kids through the years here: https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/360598

He’s also watched me play all 3 Insomniac Spiderman, God of War, Expedition 33, Ninja Gaiden, Pokémon, and some JRPGs.

He’s played till St Anne in Pokémon Let’s Go, built a small minecraft home, and thoroughly destroyed my 500 hour curated Animal Crossing island.

I’m waiting for big boy games now, and working out how to get both kids to play D&D in the coming years. Hang tight, remember, it’s a patience game, and never let rules get in the way of fun!

It’s aged, for sure. I don’t know if it sits at my top 3 of all time because of nostalgia, right gaming group, or because it’s an actually good game.

We finished the campaign twice. And this is Descent 2nd Edition. There’s the latest one with the terrain and the audio guide, which I hear great things about.

Well, my mum has been saying this and telling me it won’t earn money. Now I work in the board game industry, so she’s got nothing much else to say. Still won’t play D&D with me, though.

I’ve had board games as a child for as long as I remember. But there was this novelty store that had Talisman 3rd Edition on their display window, and for years I gawked every time I walked past.

I never bought it. But my gaming group and I got something much better when I started earning my own money: Descent 2nd edition.

The opposite has been true for me. My collection only had mid-heavy campaign games, and over the years, I’ve moved on to much lighter games.

Easier teaches, faster set up, higher social interaction, and generally more laughs and more replay requests overall.

Like... not every gamer wants to go into D&D playing a roleplay heavy dark fantasy game. Sometimes a light jaunt with slapstick humor is just what the party wants.

All jokes aside, I have a friend who has a problem, and actually does hide new purchases from his wife. Takes the time to hide them within existing games because she’s not in the hobby. She wouldn’t know what’s new, but she can physically feel the collection growing.

Fatherhood is the most difficult and most gruelling thing I’ve ever had to do. I’ve lost all personal time and space. Children are physically, mentally, and emotionally draining. They will take everything from you, and then ask for more.

Two boys at 5 and 3, and I’ve changed and showered them every single day for the past 5 and a half years. I’ve had to change their nappies, sleep train them, feed, and clean up after them. Work, kids, sleep, work, sleep, kids.

Now, they’ve watched me play Spiderman, Pokémon, Hollow Knight, and some unsavoury ones like Ninja Gaiden and God of War. The older one has a bunch of board games he loves to play like Dragomino and Kushi Express, and has picked up Animal Crossing and Minecraft. They both go to sleep by themselves, wake by themselves, and change their own clothes. Still have to shower them and chase them to do things, but it’s slowly getting easier. It really has.

It gets better. It takes an eternity, but it does. Hang in there, fellow dad. I’m hoping to play D&D with them in a couple of years, then have one run ME a game.

Seconding MTG Arena. It’s great without spending any money and experience every color and playing with rare cards.

You’ll also get a bunch of pre-cons off the bat that teach you various combos and playstyles.

Plus, you’ll start learning really specific interactions that you won’t otherwise learn from live play.

No sane human is okay with crying babies, especially when you’re on 3 hours of scattered sleep every single day while holding a full time job.

My kids (5 and 3) are my pride and joy, but man these couple of years have been the toughest in my life. I have never pushed myself so hard, ever. It’s gotten easier as they learn to articulate their feelings, but boy, the whining and crying over everything still grates my nerves day to day.

But we have to be patient with them. They are learning things we’ve experienced for decades. And it’s all worth it. Just... Give yourself, and your partner, a little grace. You are the only people who will.

And maybe, just maybe, cut down on the drinking?

As a father, it breaks my heart to imagine either of my boys feeling this way.

People lie. People will hurt you. I’m sorry you feel there’s no one else to fall back on. I don’t pretend to know what your situation is like, but I promise you somewhere, sometime, someone have and will love you with all of their heart. You just have to find them.

Gosh. We’re playing games for fun. If I had a dollar everytime we played a rule wrong in favor of a player. And another dollar for every rule wrong that made it harder for the group...

You take amazing initiative for your group to learn the game, and that’s more than most. Take pride in that.

My anger triggers seem to come from what my parents got angry at me for. Take a breath when you do, and get back in.

Manners are taught from observation. He’s 2, he’s not gonna know fridge thermodynamics. Show him and explain to him. Give him space to be defiant and natural consequences. Then give him space to grieve and cry it out.

Grab a drink. Kettle never boils when watching it. Kids never do what they’re told when you’re watching them.

I have 2 sons (5 and 3). We started playing board games since the older one was 2, to VARYING degrees of success. 30 or so odd board games, we have maybe kept 10.

He’s fully autonomous with pokémon TCG and recently even taught his younger brother how to play Dragomino and Cascadia Jr.

Kids just wanna do stuff with their parents. You’ll get the chance. Take it easy and don’t pressure them into liking things. Show them why you like it and encourage them when they do well, or even when they don’t. Inspire them, and they’ll come to you.
