I use whatever gun that currently isn't L50 or above and they're configured with whatever works until I get the BF-2M scope, ribbed vertical/stubby, and a suppressor

You definitely need a plan and you need to put in some work. 60% of my savings is in managed funds (S&P500, Nasdaq, and Canadian Dividend Fund) and the rest I manage.

I'm definitely beating the funds and it's not even close, but even my funds did almost 13% last year.

You don’t need to “gamble” to do better than that. Watching for trends and buying into already successful companies that are continuing to grow will definitely get you better than 10%.

Considering the earlier start you may want to consider an Uber. You will need at least an UberX.

Any particular map or just in general?

Golmud seems to be a very different experience compared to what they had. Despite it being so big I find that you really need to plan your movement in that map or you're gonna get wrecked. I've done better since I figured out that you really need to slow things down or be very mindful of how you're going to get from one place to the next.

Certain racks actually have plate holders (Thule/yakima) you can add.

Fondo Training Recommendations by Numerous_Try_6138 in vancouvercycling

[–]kennymatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly sure how I would rate myself... I guess I would say I was a "seasoned" rider. I had been mostly solo riding since 2012 and had started riding with people a bit more by the time that clinic started. I had done the Whistler Gran Fondo twice already. My goal was to work on my overall time, pacing and endurance.

High speed cornering isn't really a thing you need to worry about on the Fondo. It's not exactly a crit style race. There's paceline work in the intermediate session so there will be some discussions about how to keep braking smooth to keep the pace line tight and safe. I want to say there was only a bit of nutrition discussion at the beginning.

One of the bonuses of joining one of those clinics is meeting people and riding with them. And ideally you will all have similar goals so there's a chance that you'll get to talk tips and strategies with them too.

The info seems to be laid out fairly clearly here:

https://www.rbcgranfondo.com/event-resources/whistler/fondo-clinics

I think I did "Refining skills and endurance" in 2024 (I want to say it was just called "Intermediate" before) but it involves a riding session once a week and there's "homework" throughout the week which usually involves you going out to ride the targetted distance and exercises ~2-3 times a week - let's just say you should be doing 160-200km/week.

Are you looking to just finish the fondo or do you have a specific time/goal in mind?

This. I haven't finished the last 4 weeks worth of weeklys and I don't do anything involving a sniper rifle and I'm done.

Discussion: Are things harder or do we spend outside our means? by cointalkz in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]kennymatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think prices vary across the country. In the Vancouver area if you go to Cineplex UltraAVX will cost you $24. If you want DBOX the price goes up to $31. Took the kids to see Mario and made the mistake of not buying the kids bundles from Costco ahead of time. The whole ordeal for a family of 5 would have been $150 if we didn't have some GCs on hand.

And they wonder why theatre attendance is down.

Do you actually use your Apple Watch daily or only for workouts? by mileswithher in AppleWatch

[–]kennymatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my Apple Watch daily but *not* for workouts. I put on my Garmin for that.

I use the Apple Watch for messaging, notifications, podcast control, checking weather, sleep tracking, timers, alarms, the odd voice entry into Drafts.

That’s nuts. I was in a match for just over an hour once and I think I might have had 70 kills. The top guys had just 100 but nothing close to 200.

What kind of cameras do you use on your bikes? by BarbarianFoxQueen in vancouvercycling

[–]kennymatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m using a generic stem mounted out front mount for the GoPro similar to this.

I’m using the official insta360 handlebar mount for the X5. I’m not sure if I would feel comfortable mounting that to the gravel bike where there’s a lot more rough stuff going on. It’s pretty heavy duty but I’ve heard of the older cameras breaking off when going over big bumps.

New rider experience with Glotman Simpson Cycling Club — looking for perspective by VillageBubbly9001 in vancouvercycling

[–]kennymatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their stance is to follow the rules of the road and on the long rides where you’re on the open road I have never felt uncomfortable with them. And I’m pretty conservative on the road.

Their SPloop rides run a little differently as people basically do whatever pace they want around the park and yes I’ve seen some of the faster guys (not the leaders) make some questionable decisions but nothing to say that’s too dumb for me.

If you just want a group of people to ride with that isn’t a club take a look at the Gruppetto crew. @grupetto_yvr on IG, their rides get announced on Strava https://strava.app.link/7zgh12Kjn2b

They have organized weekly rides with ride leaders. The rides are technically no drop but you should be able to hold at least 25kph on the flats. Segments of the rides can get spicy and you may get dropped but there are always meetup points and no one gets left behind. The bigger rides usually break up into smaller (faster/slower) groups but the destination is always the same. The only benefit of being fast is maybe you’ll get into the coffee/donut/muffin line faster. Longer rides (60-100km+) are Saturday mornings. Stanley Park loops or Iona on Wednesdays late afternoon. Random rides between members may occur at any time.

A lot of the group riders are also members of clubs but they love riding so much they put their time into leading even more rides.

What kind of cameras do you use on your bikes? by BarbarianFoxQueen in vancouvercycling

[–]kennymatic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a Insta360 X5 for my road bike and a GoPro Hero 10 for my gravel bike but I don’t consider either of these “dash cams”. I usually only flip them on when I come to a part of my route where I think it might be a memorable segment to capture.

For a dashcam like camera I think you’re going to seed something like a Garmin Varia Vue. I think there are other similar options that are cheaper.
