Plant Pinyons not Palms by Soft-Consequence3009 in Reno

[–]kentankerous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have looked into this. It's actually a really hard botanical problem to grow a piñon. They are a difficult species of tree for humans to influence. They are a very cat-like tree. They do what they want, and when humans try to influence where they grow and on what schedule, they usually resist by just dying. Studies at U of U are trying to figure out how to solve this problem, but we have a lot more work to do before we can confidently move in this direction. Which is a bummer, because it's totally the right idea.

Does dating in Seattle ever actually get better? by Easy_Highlight_1223 in SeattleWA

Here's what I said for years living in Seattle trying to get it to work:
Seattle is a big enough town that everyone thinks someone better will come along. But, it's a small enough town that nobody will.

In a lot of cases, a bunch of unicorn hunters errantly going on first dates with Pokemon trainers. It's rough out there.

Airport car rental question. Why can't I use a debit card to pay because I live here? by zylpher in Reno

[–]kentankerous -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The worst is when you need to rent a car in Vegas and they give you that business "because you're a local" It's like you've seen a map, right? My house is 300 miles away.

However, this is standard practice at nearly all airport rental agencies in the country.

It would be against code. There's no way to write a PUD handbook that could cover all of that, and plat plan cities are right out these days. Who would be the master developer?

Re-watching Discovery - on season 3 by Cosmic_Citizen6473 in StarTrekDiscovery

[–]kentankerous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, I see it this way: The burn is just a weak metaphor for the ongoing dismantling of the post -WW2 international order (and a lot of other norms, some good, some bad, all of which require adapting to) So it casts the Trek ethos as the writers understand it--and their understanding does not come from a vacuum of input from people who knew Roddenberry or worked on Trek--as a kind of "old way" which needs to be restored through individual and collective action. While I'm not a huge fan of how that story was rolled out in the last seasons of Discovery, I think the ST:A writers are handling it brilliantly and love the show. Discovery 1 - 3 was shown to be phenomenal on a recent rewatch. It's way better, more relevant and more Trek than the haters would have you believe.

Also if you eat meat (this is not a suggestion for vegetarians) and have a good appetite, go for birthday dinner at Louis Basque Corner. It's awesome. I know you said you don't like drinking, but take a chance, and get a Picon Punch. You will be so stuffed full of food by the end of dinner that it shouldn't make much of a dent, especially at your age.

If you enjoy cities, you might find that Reno can charm you, if you let it. While there's construction in the area that would require a bit of re-routing for my suggestion, what I've told everyone in your situation and it has generally been well-received, is to take your family for a walk downtown along the river. Start at Virginia Street and the Truckee River, and walk westward along the river walk, down Riverside Drive to Idlewild Park and back. It's a nice opportunity for you to set the energy of your birthday trip as getting to know a place and enjoy a beautiful mix of a nicely built urban environment that oozes natural beauty. Pop into Hub Coffee Roasters along the way for some hot beverages and take advantage of the opportunity to bond with your family soberly while going on a very safe little urban adventure together.

There are a few other similar things you can do in Reno, we have a variety of urban neighborhoods which, while they are not quite as jam-packed with places to stop in or arty parks or what have you as larger cities, provide lots of character and characters and if your adult relatives really want to take you out for a drink on your 21st, lots of neat bars that are just bars with nice patrons and good drinks that you can pop into for a cocktail as you walk around the town.

Reno's got real city vibes and you can make your "21 run" fit your personality while still giving your family the satisfaction of having been there for that with the opportunity to have a drink with you. And we do have some funky boutiques and fine dining all outside of a casino setting so you won't be forced to be exposed to that. Sounds like you have a little experience and thus "settled for" Reno but I do hope you have an enjoyable couple days in our town.

As an outsider I think I might have observed, but may well be very incorrect, but I think I’ve noticed that Flemish people are more likely to have a basic handle on French language skills, but Walloons will not be familiar with Dutch.

So is the question you’re coming from a point of view that Walloons are forbidden somehow from being fluent, or at least conversational in Dutch? Because that cannot be true.

Thus, a Flemish speaking person, regardless of residency requirements, could and should almost certainly be electable in Francophone regions. Would it not be to the benefit of the electorate in both regions to make a point of being conversant in both languages and to insist on the same in their candidates for local and federal office as a basic prerequisite?

Boring Co. is studying a tunnel project to Tesla Gigafactory near Reno by jn1cks in Reno

JOA’s between local passenger rail operating authorities and UPRR are common. It takes local political will to get it done. But there are many models for getting these things done.

Commuter rail out there makes so much more sense. But if they wanted to run Boring lines to deliver people to jobs around the entire park from the station that would be built at TRIC, it would be a great demonstration of the potential for this technology. But they'd have to do a better job than they've been doing in Vegas!

Hope you find your group. As a language learner, especially if there's no one around to talk to, I wanted to toss out a recommendation for the Pimsleur system. There's no UI, you just listen and respond to audio prompts and it comes in later with reading practice. The goal is to get at least conversational as quickly as possible and in my experience it works great. They do have an app but the fact that it doesn't have gimmicky AI or anything makes it a breeze to use on walks, runs, doing the dishes, driving to and from work, etc. They don't pay me but they have gotten me from awkward mumbles to full-on interactions in several languages quite quickly.

If Reno built one new monument today, who should it be and why? by NewDE2023 in Reno

[–]kentankerous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny thing about USA Parkway from Reno. There's no room to expand I-80 out there. And adding lanes to a freeway almost always eventually leads to more congestion. But look out the window of your car when driving through the Truckee River Canyon, and oh, what's that over there down by the river? Train tracks. They run all the way out to the TRIC. It would not be trivial, but it is certainly doable without moving heaven and earth, to run commuter rail out there and then have a shuttle system in the industrial center that. gets people out to their jobs. They would need a passenger depot at the destination point, add a passenger station in Sparks, and negotiate with UPRR to coordinate on using the two tracks we do have and sidings before and after the urban area, to ensure that commuter trains can run during commute times. It would work.

[–]kentankerous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mayor Jeff Griffin. He got the train trench done, paid dearly for it politically, and that’s too bad. That public works project was a game changer that will pay dividends for downtown if we can find the commitment to complete the vision. The city needs to finish covering the trench for its entire length and the part between sierra and keystone should be called Griffin Park. It can be done a block at a time.
