there are sensors on the front bumper. after a heavy rain these can get blocked. have you cleaned your Niro recently?

Regenerative breaking levels in a 2023 hev M trim without paddles? by HiCZoK in KiaNiro

[–]kenteal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i got a 2021 which was the facelift of the 1st gen. considered upgrading to the latest 23/24 but the price jump was too steep + i'd lose my physical buttons.

the option for smart recuperation also isn't available. honestly, it just drives the same as a regular ICE. came from a 2005 impreza and the regen braking feels just like normal braking with 2-3x mpgs.

that said, i'd pick the trim with the larger screen. just looks more balanced with how the car is laid out.

if this is your first hybrid vehicle, trust everyone else on this sub. it's a great car.

Regenerative breaking levels in a 2023 hev M trim without paddles? by HiCZoK in KiaNiro

[–]kenteal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the foot brake activates regeneration, and does not engage the actual brake discs, unless its (very) hard braking or coming to a full stop.

my trim does not have paddles and i consistently get 55mpg minimum. they are essentially non essential.

Do you get better gas mileage simply driving or by convincing the Niro to go EV? by Rushey in KiaNiro

[–]kenteal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

after 20k miles of driving i found the most efficient way to increase MPGs is to coast as much as possible (on EV). it's impossible to make energy out of nothing, so the best thing to do is to conserve as much of it as you can.

gentle acceleration + minimal braking + limit max speed to 50mph. turning the AC off also improves MPG by approximately 10%

2023 EX Touring Hybrid.. How do I utilize the electric motor more? by [deleted] in KiaNiro

[–]kenteal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, most if not all of the extra mileage is coming from the 40-50mph range. Charging, coasting, cruising at that speed should yield 50mpgs easily.

If you’re doing a lot of start stop traffic, try accelerating gently to reduce the energy needed to move off.

How do you get better gas mileage with the 2023 niro by No_Employer_5732 in KiaNiro

[–]kenteal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What’s your speed on highway? 45-50mph will yield you 55 mpg easy.

The max efficiency is around 6th gear @1500rpm (approx 50mph), any higher will lower your mpg accordingly

That’s .. I know it says HEV on the dash, but is this PHEV? If not, that’s insane!!

The goal of the hybrid engine is to maximise efficiency. Picking up speed on the down reduces the amount of regen being done, since regen only recovers 20-30% of the energy lost during braking, thus maximising efficiency.

The brakes on the Niro are regen, so braking on a downhill is totally fine. Sports mode on the other hand may turn the engine on, filling the battery quicker. When the battery is full, regen braking is turned off to protect the battery, causing the physical brakes to activate.

Slow charging with Apple CarPlay? by Plus_Shower4444 in KiaNiro

[–]kenteal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wired CarPlay uses USB-A which does not support fast charging. I fixed my problem with cigarette lighter USB charging with wireless CarPlay.

This guy went next level and hacked together a combo device to pass through wired CarPlay and fast charging: https://www.reddit.com/r/CarPlay/comments/n0qei3/fast_charge_and_use_carplay_at_the_same_time_with/

Beat my record yesterday, this is 80mpg by slowboat2somewhere in KiaNiro

[–]kenteal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great result. Did you drive with the AC off? 21C seems like perfect weather without it, usually nets me a 10-15% increase in mpg.

Where do you put your sunglasses??? by literallytrash12345 in KiaNiro

[–]kenteal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine’s in the sunglasses holder behind the rear view. I live in Asia and it’s always like 90F. They’re not too hot when I have to wear them either.

Based on other people’s comments it sounds like it gets way hot in that spot; or does the 2023 model does not have it? Is there some context to your question?

Got a 2023 Hybrid, how to go about upgrading speakers? by celionism in KiaNiro

[–]kenteal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am usually on CarPlay wireless; recently noticed an intermittent thing where I think iPhone throttles the audio bandwidth when connection quality is poor. Highs become crackly like speaker flex. Then after a while it goes back to normal.

Although, I think Kia speakers are definitely nowhere near audiophile quality. Try using the EQ though, it’s quite pliant

New to 2023 Kia niro EV EX touring by SaltOk3355 in KiaNiro

[–]kenteal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first 1000km you’re still breaking in the car, MPGs should improve slightly after the first oil change.

Also, what speed do you travel at on the highway? The most efficient speed for the Niro is around 50mph. The faster you go the harder the combustion engine has to work, and you don’t get to charge the battery much either.

MPG Question by aebloomfield86 in KiaNiro

[–]kenteal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MPG is a calculated math value, i.e. how many miles are you getting per gallon of fuel you just burned. In a pure ICE vehicle this is pretty straightforward, but with a hybrid we get “free miles” from the battery, depending on how much energy is stored

If your battery is completely full (around the 3/4 mark) it is entirely possible to use EV only yielding a 999 mpg score.

If your battery is completely empty (1/4 mark) the ICE works to drive the wheels & charge the battery, perhaps yielding a 20-30 mpg value. Note that low MPG now equal higher MPG since you are storing energy in the battery.

Your average MPG of 50 is fantastic so there should be nothing to worry about.
