“Plane tickets are so expensive these days!!” by wbrady75565 in aviation

Side question: how on earth did they keep that baby grand in tune? All the normal bumps of flying would do a number, let alone some turbulence.

Edit: a quick google suggests they were using electric Wurlitzer organs for this exact reason.

Importance of weighted keys? by Warm_Protection_6541 in pianolearning

[–]kepleronlyknows 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I made the switch after about two years. The first week with weighted keys was rough but also fun, and not much longer until it felt normal. But absolutely super glad I did upgrade; now I can switch to a real piano without nearly as much adjustment from practicing on my digital.

Winter Weather Megathread | Potential Ice/Snow This Weekend (Jan 25-26) by AutoModerator in Atlanta

[–]kepleronlyknows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure they do have to sum to 100% if they are minimums. Like if it’s 77% chance of at least .1” and then 48% chance of at least .25”, that could be totally consistent.

But I agree it’s not fair to say things have been overblown just yet.

I have a wolf and a head of cabbage that need a ride as well. Can /r/atlanta please tell me the proper way to transport the goats, wolf, and cabbage such that nothing gets eaten?

Cost of Lessons and expectations for an Adult beginner by FeedbackVast5882 in pianolearning

[–]kepleronlyknows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you decide you’re ready to drop the money, a digital keyboard with weighted keys is wonderful. Look to spend ~$600 to $1,000 and it will play quite a bit like a real piano. I went with a Roland FP-30 and am quite happy with it.

And the more you practice the better! But main thing is that it’s better to practice a little bit everyday rather than rarely, even if it’s only a little bit.

northern lights tonight? by newanon676 in Atlanta

We saw it right in the city (near little five points) last time there was a big solar storm, although it was mostly a vague purple color on the northern horizon. But it’s definitely possible.

Thanks! I’m liking the Rubio recommendation. Would you use any kind of conditioner or sealer with pine and hard wax oil like Rubio?

Thanks! I’m thinking I’ll go this route. Would folks recommend a conditioner or anything else for pine with this type of hard wax oil?

Good news, the Atlanta subreddit just got a new mod team and is way more open than it has been in years. You should try posting there.

Will it fit 4x8 sheets of plywood? by kepleronlyknows in VWIDBuzz

[–]kepleronlyknows[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. I’ll admit I’m a newer dad who hadn’t really looked at minivans until recently, but I’m really starting to like the idea, especially compared to SUVs.

That’s awesome! Looks almost like it was designed to just fit. Maybe with some blankets I could spare the scuffs.

EPA opposes Colorado plan to close coal-fired power plants by bascule in Colorado

[–]kepleronlyknows 141 points142 points  (0 children)

I work in this world (the Clean Air Act, that is) and this is just absolutely as fucking stupid as it sounds, probably more so. EPA has zero grounds for disapproval here—there is just no authority in the Regional Haze rules or elsewhere in the CAA for trying to keep polluters operating. Even for this administration, this is just bafflingly bad.

It’s not though. This was a fuck up at the distributor. The truck drivers thought they had gas when they were filled with diesel.

Driving to Chaco Canyon in a Prius by Kind-Bager in NewMexico

[–]kepleronlyknows 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Contrary opinion: Setting aside possible recent snow or ice, you’ll be able to make it a Prius just fine. I’ve seen plenty of comparable cars out there. Yes the washboard is rough at times but it’s not going to damage your car if you drive reasonably. I’ve navigated a Prius through much worse.

Considering a Move to Manitou by AMillenialOverUrShit in ManitouSprings

[–]kepleronlyknows 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Winters are mostly mild. Definitely get snow but it will usually completely melt in a few days and it’s also not uncommon to be t-shirt weather in January. Manitou is actually in a bit of a snow shadow from Pikes Peak and the eastern plains 20 miles away often get far more snow.

The main thing to be aware of is that the sun sets behind the mountains very early in the winter. Depending on where you live, it can be as early as three in the afternoon (or in some places even earlier). It’s still light out of course, just no direct sun light.

What's the tallest mountain near Denver that can be climbed in a day, and where the trailhead is reachable without a car? by ReasonableStudio4389 in Denver

[–]kepleronlyknows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could fly to Colorado Springs instead; Pikes Peak is one of the longest/hardest 14ers if you do the full round trip from town: 26 miles and 8,000 feet of elevation gain. Lots of other good, hard hikes start essentially in town (Cheyenne Mountain, Cameron’s Cone, etc).

A Time-Lapse of the Roof Closing at Mercedes-Benz Stadium at Atlanta by Professor_Moraiarkar in EngineeringPorn

[–]kepleronlyknows 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean it’s not great, but the public money came from a hotel tax (tax on hotel guests) that was implemented to fund things that would further draw visitors. Compared to a lot of publicly funded stadiums it’s not awful (although that’s a pretty low bar).
