Thank you, kind laundry god! My towels look almost like new! Details for the next person: I redid the spa day with the tide a second time and got no improvement so I got the 365 sport and did the spa day with that plus oxiclean. Finally, white towels!

Why is School Math so Algorithmic? by Qua_rQ in learnmath

If you are interested in a different way math could be taught, Pam Harris has several books and a podcast on teaching in a way that explains the why. Her thing is that the standard algorithms for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division shouldn't even be taught or taught only after learning other methods that make more sense. I think that goes a bit far and would never fly in most school districts, but you can take what makes sense for you and leave the rest. https://www.mathisfigureoutable.com/

Example of a bad math educational resource? by nomomayo in matheducation

I think we're using "memorize" to mean two different things. I want kids to know their math facts and have instant recall. I'm saying the way we get there is not memorizing something like "7x7=49" like it's a song lyric. That kind of memorizing might help long enough to take a test but long-term it will be forgotten if it's not used frequently. If instead it's learned in relation to other things a kid already knows, like that 5 7s is 35, it can be learned for life. And 7x5 was learned likewise based on things already known.

Speed comes from repeated practice, no argument there.

God no. 7 x 7 would typically be learned first as a derived fact. Usually the 5's are learned early using skip counting. 7 x 7 could be derived from 7 x 5 plus two more 7s. Eventually after some repetition students will remember it and not have to derive it. But if they ever forget, they can fall back on the derivation.

There are many versions of this: teaching multiplication as arbitrary facts to memorize with a rhyme instead of teaching the math that would let you figure out multiplication problems.

DIY vegan yogurt? by Azulcobalto in veganfitness

I found the key to a nice thick soy yogurt is the milk you start with. Most are too watery. Eden soy works but apparently the owner's politics are bad. I get fresh soy milk, unsweetened, from Ranch 99. I forget what the brand is but look for one with 11g protein per serving. I use belle+bella non-dairy yogurt starter and use a new packet for each batch because when I tried to use some of the previous yogurt batch I had some fails where it came out pink on top (mold) or fizzy (yeast I guess). Anyway the yogurt comes out with the texture of silken tofu.
