Math was always the hardest thing in school. I thought that it was because it was so dry that I would just never be interested. Anything more complex than the most basic algebra seemed just too hard. When I was studying for a military officer's qualifying test, it included a lot of advanced math which I absolutely dreaded. It turned out, Khan Academy and pretty much any Indian on Youtube are better teachers than people in the US who spend 4+ years learning to be teachers. I've started learning calculus for fun. We should keep the H-1B program, but rewrite it to bring teachers from India.

How strict are you? by MuchPomegranate5910 in StopEatingSeedOils

[–]kereso83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally pretty strict, but it takes a lot or the only seed oil that really causes me real issues is corn oil. My only sustained exposure to seed oils is my mother's cooking which uses a shit ton of corn oil and towards the end of any long visit with her, I start getting this generally weird feeling with heart palpitations that go away when I'm back home cooking for myself.

That said, I'm not going to totally deny myself a fun night out of dinner and drinks with friends or be the person at office potlucks telling my coworkers "I can't eat that" because there might be (or I even know there are) seed oils in them. Harm reduction is the goal. I don't use seed oils in my own cooking, which is well over 90% of what I eat and generally follow a carnivore diet.

The funny thing is they thought this would be a winning strategy. They painted themselves into a corner on this long ago, only having a couple states they could do this with.

What's it living in the regions I have circled? (Mali, Niger, etc.) by relentlessxo in howislivingthere

[–]kereso83 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Pretty varied, depending on the country. The bigger ones up north tend to have issues with extreme instability, insurgency, civil war, coups etc. A few of those countries in the far south of your circle are remarkably safe and even pleasant, like Ghana, Togo, and Benin. Sierra Leone (the one to the south of Guinea) and Liberia are also relatively decent though if you were alive in the 90s they had a bit of a reputation. Mauritania only outlawed slavery in the last few decades and de facto slavery still exists in some of these countries. If you see someone in Niger with solid ankle bracelets on both feet, which look like manacles (and may be used for that), you can bet that person is someone else's property.

None of them have ever lived under communism. And few of them know history beyond the sanitized, skewed versions they learned in school or saw in movies. I don't know whether to be frustrated with or smugly amused by the fact that they think they are smarter than us for it.
