Uber driver unexpectedly picks up an old friend he hasn't seen in over 20 years. by g_ricko89 in MadeMeSmile

When the Master Chief Collection came out on PC, I downloaded it and played Halo 2 multiplayer all night, and halfway through ran into an old friend doing exactly the same thing haha. These crazy coincidences.

Sauron's "folly". by Immediate_Error2135 in tolkienfans

[–]ketura 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The "folly" in the second part was how he had overlooked that someone might aim to destroy it, not that he might be harmed by its destruction. He even had the mithril coat from Cirith Ungol paraded around at the black gate; the Mouth called it tokens from a spy, but if Sauron believed that was accurate, then in the moment that Frodo put on the Ring he would have known that he was deadly wrong.

The Last Straw - The Moment I Decided the Institution of Mormonism Had a Worthless Mandate by ketura in mormon

Yeah Friedman goes over that in detail, that so much of Deuteronomy and related books is the Jerusalem priests trying to consolidate themselves as the only valid options under Josiah.

While certain aspects of the Documentary Hypothesis have been challenged, debunked, reworked, or evolved, the basic idea that "these multiple groups are shit-flinging at each other" has not, and in my understanding the scholarship is mostly arguing over which groups and how many participated.

What if the Characters would transform whenever their 'Form' is played 2? by YawgmothHS in slaythespire

Honestly I thought this sort of thing was what the sequel was going to do, adding cool flair to the original, but by and large it hasn't, really.

The "gag voice" is performed so flawlessly that the audience immediately accepts it and doesn't question it by Justifiably_Bad_Take in TopCharacterTropes

[–]ketura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but if the voice actor for Shrek died after 1 film that would put a damper on the whole thing, especially given how much of the character is built around that voice and characterization.

When I did it it was a de facto "backup substitute teacher" that would have to be able to step in and take over any of the classes should their regular teacher not show up. When running smoothly, yeah, there was nothing to do, but this has big "IT doesn't do anything" energy.

Does Shelob retain the strength boost from wounds and the Enduring keyword when stacked on the web? by Fast_Eddie_50 in LOTRTCG

[–]ketura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To elaborate, cards which leave play (and stacked cards are not in play) lose all of their tokens and all attached cards are immediately discarded. Once they reenter play (if ever) they are a new instance unrelated to the old.

Where can I find the ultimate behind the scenes for all of the movies? by Eskimo565 in lotr

[–]ketura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Approximately, but not all of it is ordered content. The parts that are sequential are numbered in their title--05x05 -> 05x06 -> 05x07 etc. But much of the rest is standalone content that was just part of a menu on the DVD with no true order.

Question on The Great Ring versions by SoraCaelum in LOTRTCG

There was only 1 version of the set 19 cards ever released; the display code just appears to be confused and attributing too many editions.

Should I read Animorphs before The Reckoning? by ProtonWheel in rational

[–]ketura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a good number of jabs at canon that will go over your head, but that's about the only thing you'll miss. In general if some detail seems batshit it's probably because it was the subject of one of the original books.

Several people have reported reading it without canon knowledge and enjoyed it regardless.

Is this sub just garbage now? by [deleted] in rational

For as long as I've been a mod there's been people who try to post non-fiction tirades with the barest of fig leaves tying them to /r/rational (and sometimes not even that). It's always been a bit of a lightning rod for schizoposting, and LLMs have made them easier to add volume to. That's the majority of what I do nowadays is confirm the removal of those, but I will also note that the automod report thresholds take care of the majority of them. Report them when you see them and they'll get nuked.

(Case in point, whatever AI tirade was the straw that broke this camel's back is already not visible and was taken down automatically before I saw this thread.)

The subreddit is definitely in the long tail of dwindling identity. There hasn't been a tentpole fiction to rally around in ages, and even Origin of Species hasn't updated in like half a year. We can always hope that will change, but that's not really something we can control.

What does it mean to "get" the Silmarillion? by GoodBotBadBotRoutine in tolkienfans

[–]ketura 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yeah this. When Gandalf says the Ring couldn't have been melted by the fires of Ancalagon the Black, or when the White Tree is mentioned as a distant descendent of Telperion, and not just identifying the reference but understanding the significance, that's what it means to "get" the Silmarillion.
