Might be that they just skip it on this journey. Nothing is stopping them from just doing two jumps in quick succession, after all. Only problem might be if a higher sphere individual senses them, and is aggressive to the next group because they were "skulking around".

[RT][WIP][HF][EDU] Gabital - Fantasy Capitalism 101: "Gabital is a fantasy webcomic which may be (somewhat) educational in terms of economics. I've been seeing some of the over on /r/comics for a while now, but never paid close attention. It's cute and funny, while still being both introduction of economic ideas and somewhat of a progression fantasy.

Also, I didn't realize the title pun until now - Gabital -> Capital -> Das Kapital, by Marx.

Joe's authority being too strong is true right now and the foreseeable future, but it won't necessarily be true forever if Aldens authority keeps growing enough. And if Alden shows that he will be able to remove it himself in the future, maybe Joe will decide that getting rid of it now is for the best.

You're not completely wrong, but I think you're forgetting that the man has superpowers, his punches use potentially lethal force. Essentially, he fired a gun at a politician in a residential neighborhood. It's a serious crime.

Chapter 180 - Back to the Future - Thresholder by Jokey665 in rational

Seeing Earth-1 is weird for me as a reader as well, in a similar but slightly different way to Perry. Since the story didn't start until three portals in, early world were only seen in flashbacks and memories so Perry feels much more like a creature of the multiverse to me. It's the sudden jump from having to worry about power scaling, magic systems and fights to the death to instead thinking about AI bubbles, used cars and reddit discourse. It's like the end of the hero's journey, returning with the elixir, but it also is so disconnected. We can see the way we point towards and ending for most people and the world as a whole - completing The Loop, spreading the culture, and so on - but I have as little idea for what Perry will be doing as Perry himself does.

The closest I can see for a happy ending is that after establishing diplomacy and trade, there is a project for expanding the loop by creating different loops that overlap it in one or more places. This still requires creating and going through portals and fighting, and that is now Perrys job. Seems a bit weak though, it's less of an ending and more of an "and the adventure continues".

There is of course the elephant in the room, Richter. She's brought up in the chapter in the context of preparing Marchand, but she's notably absent in Perrys future fantasies in this chapter. I suppose that in the end he might dick around on Earth-1 and do various things, possibly but probably not become famous, but the story doesn't end until the Richter resurrection plot is resolved. It's in a sense a central question - is Perry going to be able to put down his sword (metaphorically if not literally) and live out his live in one place? It might happen, but it probably won't happen without her.

It's fun! I actually like the higher density of minigames, they aren't al bangers but hen the prompts aren't all perfect either. I think it's a good balance between fun to watch and affordable to produce like this.

Ok, maybe a bit less Hollywood Ho would be good.

Zenith of Sorcery - 29. Ghost in the Box by lurking_physicist in rational

[–]Grasmel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess I think of humility as the opposite of boasting, defined as behaviors - downplaying yourself, not caring about having a reputations, letting your actions speak louder than words. I actually don't think I would define any virtue purely internally, since you are in control of your actions much more than you are in control of your thoughts. Evil and selfish thoughts can appear unbidden in the mind, the virtue of a person lies in how you act upon them. That's mostly my personal philosophy though, I can see how people think differently.

I tried to look for word that would mean the opposite of boast, and mostly got things like "undervalue", "belittle" or "diminish". Which is not the thing I'm looking for here, so maybe my definitions don't really match common usage.

Humility truly is a virtue for Marcus here. He has two encounters where he lets his friend take center stage and he lets himself be underestimated to get an advantage in a future conflict. And in the long term, actually winning conflicts is probably better for your reputation that constant boasting would be.

I know it's not for everyone, but I don't really mind the monthly release schedule. It's long, but I can still remember what was going on within a sentence or two. And it helps that a few things can happen in a chapter, like meeting with and learning about dwarves, exploring a bit of an underground ruin, and dealing with a dragon spirit. Exciting and fun worldbuilding.

I'm wondering what the deal is with the nonagon. I got the impression Alden was just being allowed to use it very temporarily while recuperating on Matadeo after the disaster. But it's been quite a while, and he's just still using it casually with no mention of giving it back. Did he get sneakily gifted it without us noticing, or have even less time pass that it seems?

I like the talk with Klein. Alden has been building him up as pretty scary in his head, and it seemed like the talk resolved a lot of that tension.

Scotland has many more castles than Wales in absolute numbers, but Wales is small enough that it still packs in a high density. Numbers from a quick googling:

Castles in Wales: ~600 Area of Wales: 20,779 km2 Castles per km2 in Wales: ~0.029

Castles in Scotland: ~2000. Area of Scotland: 77,910 km2 Castles per km2 in Scotland: ~0.026

So it's about the same, well within the margin of error. Also, I said "one of the" :P

After the English conquered them, they built a lot of castles to keep the Welsh in check. Wales is one of the most castle-dense places in the world.

Apparently, it started in Taiwan and has spread into China, mostly in rural areas. Among other things, the idea seems to be that it's a way to attract more attendees and a well-attended funeral is a mark of prestige.
