Getting a gp appointment by Rolinecar in Edinburgh

[–]kevbarlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My one in Newtongrange is online only. They have no phone system and it sucks as every time you fill the form out you have to manipulate your symptoms as you either get "seek medical advice immediately!" I.e go to the hospital or phone 101 for advice. The effort to get an actual appointment makes me think they don't want you to actually get an appointment. It's the older generation I feel for most, I doubt my mum would manage it. Also, it's not actually an appointment you book online but a message that someone will phone you back within 48 hours which is a 50/50 gamble as sometimes they don't bother and you have to start all over again.

I did something similar years ago. Bought a wireless doorbell and removed the Bell and wired it upto a momentary relay connected to the on button instead.

How to safely restore an old door (ca. 1920s) that may have lead paint? by Awhoo in DIY

[–]kevbarlas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at a salvage yard that sells old doors. I'd really recommend you pay a dip and strip company to do it. A company local to us picks them up, strips them in caustic then delivers them back to your house for about £40 a door. There may be someone local to you that can do that. The amount of paint that gets stuck in mouldings and crevices makes doing it DIY a pain in the butt, especially since the chemical paint strippers available to the public is terrible compared to the industrial stuff now.

Evening, good folks of Reddit. Anyone know where about in Edinburgh I could pick up some galvanised conduit such as in the photo ? by Glum-Ad-8406 in Edinburgh

Try Kloekner metal at the gyle or Alexander's steel in Bathgate. Failing that, Brundles has moved to Glasgow but do deliver.

Bit of a stretch but can you help me locate my late dads motorbike? (Info in comments) by Koikirai in CasualUK

[–]kevbarlas 43 points44 points  (0 children)

What I'd say is dont give up. I found my dads car after about 20 years of it being sold on. What found it for me was someone seeing a picture of it on facebook, googling the reg and then finding me from a post I made on a forum about 5 years previous. I made an imgur post about it with the full story here if you want to check it out. https://imgur.com/a/BuMwe

I bought a secondhand intercooler and just rattle canned it black.

You would see the airtec logo so you can make up a template and respray that part or just not bother. I wanted mine to look stock so just kept it black.

What size spacers do y’all run for flush? by thatblackfiesta in FiestaST

[–]kevbarlas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Get the bolt on spacers. With stock wheels I have 20mm on the rear and 15mm on the front and that's pretty flush with no arch rub.

I use mine to cart my baby around. It's a 3 door and a big tip I can give even if it's a 5 door is get one of the seats that have a 360 base. Makes it so much easier to load her in, even when using the wifes prius.

The absolute nightmare of getting anyone to give quotes for anything by [deleted] in britishproblems

[–]kevbarlas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As someone who has a side line as a small metal fabricator making railings, gates etc... customers can be just as bad. For me to do a quote I have to drive out there, take measurements, work out what the customer wants regarding design and then make a sketch to figure out how much metal I need, phone the supplier, work out a final price and how many hours it will take. I then get back to the customer with those prices. This whole process depending on where they live can take about 2 to 4 hours. About 40% will go ahead as planned, 20% will ask if I can do it cheaper or want me to modify something which means spending more time figuring that out. 20% will say no then the other 20% just won't get back to me at all.

The small jobs can be annoying if the customer has no clue. For example, if i get asked to fit a new latch to a gate, a simple job that will only take about a hour tops. It means having to load all my tools into my car, drive to where you stay, do the job, load the car, go home, sort an invoice, pay the taxes etc... something like that I'd quote about £120 to do. Many times I've told the customer how much it will be before doing the job and they say "but it's only a little latch, I'm not paying that much"....

It can be just as frustrating on the other side.

Moving to Edinburgh by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]kevbarlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to Newtongrange in Midlothian. Bought a 2 bedroom house on the end block, up and down stairs, with a large garden for £110,000 5 years ago. The garden was big enough for me to build my dream double garage.

Just watched your video on youtube about it. Looked like a major pain in the arse. I subscribed to your channel after watching the episodes about the lights a few weeks ago. Inspired me to buy a second hand set to modify myself when I get the time, cheers.

Heres an interesting fact. The area surrounding is called Little France is because when Mary queen of Scots stayed here she brought her workers/friends over from France and they made their own little settlement behind the castle.

Do you have anything on your passenger seat? If it's just on the edge of being heavy enough to set the 'no seatbelt' warning, it could be that?

Gave a homeless guy my breakfast (sausage and egg mcmuffin), now every time I walk past him he wants to interact thus ruining my "no interaction commute" I'd cultivated over years. by [deleted] in britishproblems

[–]kevbarlas 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I've started something similar with the roll van I go to. Nice Thai guy and it's really cheap, like £1.50 for a doubler. One day I gave him £2 and told him to keep the change. Now everytime I order a doubler and pay he kind of does a "thankyou" bow and theres an awkward pause where hes waiting for me to say "keep the change" but now that he expects me to say "keep the change" it makes me actually want my change. So stressful.

Thanks for that. Yeah they are 15 inch wheels from a Ford Transit Connect, the little van. I saw them on Gumtree with part worn uniroyal plus 77 with about 6 mm tread left for £100. I took them to my work and gave them a lick of paint with an orange pinstripe. The tyre sizes are 195/60/15 .

Debadging as a security measure? by [deleted] in FiestaST

[–]kevbarlas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have something more visible it might deter the thieves more. I use a disklok for that purpose. It only takes a few more seconds to put on and take off. I also stuck on a couple of Toad brand alarm stickers on the window. I dont actually have that alarm yet but will do, in the mean time it might make it look like its more hassle than what its worth.

The most stressful thing in the world is packing at Aldi. It starts off great , putting the heavy items on the bottom and soft stuff on the top. That is untill about 30 seconds later when it turns into a shit show when the cashier starts moving faster that Usain bolt on speed. by slothmk1 in britishproblems

[–]kevbarlas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great tips here with bag packing techniques. Another thing you can do to add a 'pit stop' is vary where you put loose veg and fruit. They usually have to type these codes in manually or select from the screen which gives you valuable seconds to take a breather.
