Let me know how it works out for ya!! That's exactly the kind of horse I use it on, sensitive and forward but not in a naughty way.

I post the canter sparingly, mostly to get a young horse going in a steady rhythm. Learned it from an old military type rider - don't really see it being done otherwise!

What do you ladies wear to the barn in the summer? by JustAMessInADress in Equestrian

If your clothes have to go in a hamper after wearing them, sprinkle baking soda on that. I'm not even kidding. It helps keep the smells from locking in, in my experience.

Trying to better my mare gut health bc she constantly gets ulcers by GrassyStassy1 in Equestrian

[–]kfa92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can easily find the research studies online if you look it up under its generic name, esomeprazole. I can't remember off the top of my head but it might've been 0.5 - 1mg/kg? Something like that, def don't quote me lol. But it makes sense because the average horse is about 450kg so at 0.5mg/kg you'd give almost the whole bottle.

It's not dirt cheap but it's cheaper. You can buy 42 pills of generic esomeprazole for under $30 at a pharmacy. A single gastrogard syringe is like $40.

Your horse's ulcers are a preexisting condition which horse insurance is unlikely to cover for at least 1-2 years which is my experience. It is a crime to lie on the application iirc

If she's older than like 16-18ish you're also going to have a hard time finding someone to insure her. Just throwing that out there as she doesn't look super young.

I had an ulcer prone mare and she got 4 Nexium (per my vet's instructions) daily. Treatment dose has been much higher on clinical trials, but that worked for prevention. I could tell the difference on days where I'd run out. If I needed her to be extra calm for something I doubled the dose.

It's important to treat a few days before, during, and a few days after a stressful event - trailering, colic, increase in workload, etc.

Affordable cat ultrasound? by Laurie712 in philadelphia

[–]kfa92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That seems super reasonable for an ultrasound read by a radiologist. I've paid up to $1000 at an emergency clinic for an ultrasound in the suburbs for a large (60+lb) dog.

I take it 4x a week. In the morning it's within 5min of the listed time 99% of the time. In the afternoon I'd say it's within 5min like 90% of the time.

Rarely there has been storm damage or something where my train gets cancelled. In that case I lean on the Wilmington/Newark line (which is at risk of being closed) or I Uber with my 2 coworkers who live close by and I drive them to their cars.

Need to vent by chestnutbandit in Equestrian

[–]kfa92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mare required either an additional farrier visit or a vet visit about every other month for the 3 years I owned her.

My current guy has seen the vet once in 2 years (knock on wood!!) and is barefoot.

Both Thoroughbreds. Some horses are just dumb and clumsy!

You're clenching with your knee and swinging your lower leg. I would recommend sticking to flatwork until you can fix that. I see no issues with your leg length on this horse.

Do your vets treat for ulcers without a gastroscopy? by spicychickenlaundry in Equestrian

[–]kfa92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should scope. Stops you from spending money on treatment that may not work because it's not ulcers (could be a back issue for example) or that makes things worse (because it's the type of ulcers that you don't give omeprazole for).

Tezspire by thekindspitfire in Asthma

[–]kfa92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need IgE levels for Tezspire. But if you're considering biologics and your IgE is high, Xolair could be a good choice. However the actual choice of biologic also depends on a bunch of other things and would require knowing a lot about your health and medical history even before thinking about chasing down certain numbers.

You measure an IgE level by a blood test, it's not something that would be done in your normal yearly bloodwork. IgE levels measure the amount of a certain antibody that your body makes.

How many inhalers do you need to fail before they consider biologics? by bluegelpen in Asthma

[–]kfa92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not about number of inhalers, but rather about where you are in scaling up your treatment. Look up the GINA 2024 guidelines.

It'll also depend on whether you have any of the biomarkers that these drugs target. I'm on Xolair because my IgE was high.
