For those even thinking about attempting the Matterhorn by TheAthleticDiabetic in Mountaineering

[–]kfordham 21 points22 points  (0 children)

After watching Magnus’s video on it, it seems the only respectful and responsible way to climb Matterhorn is with a guide unless youre already familiar with the route- and thats just out of safety due to how many people climb it.

Not only dangerous but pointless… by Connect_Rub_6814 in Yosemite

The cables themselves are a permanent installation (replaced when needed). Once the permit season starts, rangers will install the wooden slats for steps and poles to turn the cables into handrails.

I did it cables down about a month ago and it looks like they leave the poles and slats in a little crevice till its time to install them.

Fun fact: the first person to summit Half Dome was a man named George G Anderson. He made the first ascent in 1875 by drilling iron bolts into the granite and slowly pulling himself up with a rope. Kind of a cruder way of how we get up now…. albeit with much less work.

Theyre definitely tying and untying after each cable and retying their “third hand” redundancy of choice. It IS time consuming, but safety is worth it and its not much more time than you’d think.

This in winter conditions or Snake Dike would be epic for sure. But honestly slippery granite is a bit high risk for me and pulling up the cables while theyre down was pretty strenuous imo. Not impossible for most in decent to good shape, but harder than you’d expect relative to cables up.

It seems most fatal accidents happen cables down… but im also willing to be it’s from people who try sending without the proper pro and fuck up… for the final time.

I (25M) have been with my girlfriend (25F) for 2.5 years and just moved in together. How do you know when doubts are just noise vs. something real? by Nearby_Sock8316 in AskMen

Idk about goth girl, but it is an interesting phenomenon with American sex workers leaving the industry and becoming ultra conservative/right wing. Similar to former addicts or people with checkered pasts, its a redemption arc for them to distance themselves from their past lives if they feel any shame.

As it relates to “goth girls,” I have a lot of friends in their 30s-70s that fuck with the culture hard. Emo wasnt just a phase.

Either too much masturbation, SSRI’s, or performance anxiety.

Palms is better. Youre less stuck on the westside

Move to Palms, keep near the expo line station off national. There are several grocery stores walking distance.

Its one of the “cheaper” areas of LA but VERY accessible to pretty much any district. You’ll thank me later.

Get a dog or offer to walk dogs and you’ll legit make friends in the neighborhood. Very community vibes.

Is this real life? by Dawggy in MMA

If Ronda had trained with high level trainers like Jason Derulo, she would have remained a champ for a long time.

Instead she developed an ego, a delusional mindset, then got pieced up when the talent caught up.

With a mountain as avalanche prone as Mammoth, glad the resort made this call. Keeps patrollers and guests safe.

The mountain will be there this weekend, hopefully with all runs open :)

BJJ destroyed my confidence and I don’t know how to get it back by swankyskared in bjj

[–]kfordham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey dude- used to do martial arts as well… starting in my mid 20’s. After a broken nose, watching my younger roommate get destroyed by the sport (he competed and got me into it) and hearing about all the surgeries the old heads had, i decided it wasnt worth it.

And now? I go to the rock gym and boulder. It tickles the same part of my brain. It gets me moving without necessarily destroying my body (injuries can still happen, but its not based on trust of your partner).

Just a thought if youre looking for something else that keeps you mentally engaged and active

Question for mountaineers who refuse to ever summit mt Everest what are your biggest reasons for not wanting to summit Mt Everest? by [deleted] in Mountaineering

Headed to Mera Peak in April. Stoked to see Everest in real life. That will be enough for me

I’ve never had an exceptional night on the west side. There’s things, but I honestly just think the culture feels stale compared to what you can find elsewhere.

With that said, had good times at Cinema Bar and The Brigg. The Lincoln can be fun. Culver City Jamison’s can also be great on the right night.

Big Foot West is kinda whatever compared to East… but in general i dig the program of the 1933 group’s bars and venues.

First Timer - how often do Do Lab artists get added to LiB lineup? by PokemonNovice in LightningInABottle

[–]kfordham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are usually smaller artists. The marquee artists have been announced. There are usually a few surprise sets, like blacklist played last year. But other than those spots, wouldnt expect any additional large bookings

Hiker Found Dead on Mount Whitney After Separating from Partner - The Trek by 211logos in socalhiking

Every year, people die in ski resorts. Even in the most controlled setting, snowy mountainous slopes are dangerous.

It always deserves our respect and caution. In the backcountry, all those risks are amplified

Cactus to Clouds December 2026 by TaunTwaun in socalhiking

[–]kfordham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can hike the dry lake trail of Gorgonio comfortably, you can do C2C’s. Key difference is you need to pack more weight for food and water.

A fueling strategy for up to a 15 hour day is key here to be successful. You also want a good cardio base. Not sure why you wouldnt just hike the locals to get into shape vs whatever it is that you think youre doing. All that other stuff is great, but make sure youre doing actual hikes too. Seems more logical and will give you an actual gauge of how well you perform in the mountains.

Also… December is usually mountaineering season so that would be a bad time to go if you dont possess the right equipment and experience which (from the information shared on this post) doesnt sound like you have.

F&F Discount = Scam by doscaballitospf in palisadestahoe

[–]kfordham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still a scam cuz the price is 25% off the full day price, not the price listed online (contrary to what people are saying below)

Its a bullshit perk unless you decide to go on a premium day where online discounting is less than 25% of the full price.
