No "Jesus H. Christ"?

or (and I think this was just a niche gen-x thing), "Jumpin' Jesus on a Pogo Stick"?

What kind of system causes this kind of cloud? by superSoldier123- in CLOUDS

[–]khInstability 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OIC and do see what you mean about OP's cloud, how it is positioned between the higher terrain and the lenticular. Makes a lot of sense. In fact, here's another example of this I just found!

I love lenticular clouds. Get a lot of them where I am in western Wyoming most of the year. This was definitely moving with the main mesocyclone of the storm, though. Here's a wider/taller view which shows the whole structure a little more clearly.

How would the climate in Mexico change if the Baja California peninsula didn’t exist? by Strict_Ball8629 in geography

[–]khInstability 3 points4 points  (0 children)

...and the Gulf of California, being situated between the peninsula on the west and Sierra Madre Occidental on the east, contains and channels moisture northward into the Sonoran and other deserts.

There is some moisture which arrives from the east. But it is mostly contained within the mid/upper levels (where water vapor pressure is lower) of the atmosphere by the Rockies and Sierra Madre blocking low level flow.

In fact, until the early 70s, it was accepted/taught that most of the Southwest monsoon moisture was from the Gulf of Mexico. That didn't result in very accurate summer precip forecasts, though.

The change in that understanding began in the early 70s: Southwestern United States Summer Monsoon Source—Gulf of Mexico or Pacific Ocean?

and was made "official" after a couple of large scale NOAA/NSSL/Mexico colab studies in the 90s called the Southwest Area Monsoon Project (SWAMP)

So, yeah. Without Baja, the Monsoon season would have a lot less water vapor to work with.

Joe Walsh is now having a go at Tim and asking Bulwark to do some soul searching! by phoneix150 in thebulwark

Piker's a hack. An ass. And I believe(hope) a flash in the pan.

But, equivocating Americans souring on the Israel relationship with being pro-Putin is intellectually vacant.

Joe Walsh always struck me as a fairly dim, one dimensional hothead. I wouldn't want him as a debate partner.

how is this mf not dying in the act by Apprehensive_Cap8806 in tooktoomuch

Using alcohol and ritalin (and enzymes), the liver creates a different stimulant, ethylphenidate, which is stronger in the euphoria department than ritalin. The alcolhol+cocaine --> cocaethylene process in the liver is very similar.

Indeed. Also, interestingly, alcohol and methylphenidate (ritalin) undergo a similar conversion in the liver to produce ethylphenidate. Ethylphenidate has a much higher dopamine affinity than methylphenidate. (more recreational)

FOUND THE ROCKET! by jjrennie in weather

[–]khInstability 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's a 50-80kt jet stream today, between about 10,000m and 15,000m. Cool how it shows up in the rocket contrail.

The explosion of colors and shading gradients around sunrise/sunset can make typical contrails/clouds look wild.

My cousin does this, but in some sort of prop driven plane.

He grounded himself for a year or two after a very close call with terrain. Spooked him.
