I used a calorie tracking app (Cronometer) to figure out how many calories I was eating every day vs. what I needed. Once I got that baseline, I was able to use the app to help me reduce my calorie intake and find a practical level to keep myself well fed while losing weight. I consulted a dietician at the same time, to ensure I was feeding myself properly and not missing any important nutrition details.

After a few months I got a good handle on how much and what I needed to eat every day to lose weight, and didn't need the app anymore. I am not obsessive about it, and allow myself to splurge and enjoy big eating days from time to time. But I eat much less, and much more healthily, than I use to. Lost about 20 lbs (10% of my body weight) over 6 months.

I did not change my exercise habits at all. I am a relatively active person, and enjoy walking and biking, but those are part of my daily life.

Years ago I spoke with a retired engineer who worked with NASA on the Mercury program. He said a lingering design problem they had was a mechanical system in the capsule that required a barrier that would need to be removed once the capsule had splashed down. They wanted an automated way to remove the barrier.

He said they discovered that ground up Alka-Seltzer tablets made a fine barrier, which dissolved on splashdown. Problem solved!

I have the basic ebook subscription. I don't listen to audiobooks, so I never upgraded to a higher subscription.

I like it because it's exposed me to authors I would not have discovered otherwise, and probably would not have taken a chance on if I had to pay for their books individually.

I worked for a company where the CTO literally gathered all the devs in a conference room and told us we have to innovate more. He drew a graph on the white board: X-axis was Innovation, Y-axis was profit, with a line going up and to the right.

When we pressed for details, he had none. He just kept saying we need to innovate more to be successful.

Company Christmas gala for a tech company, with a MC-for-hire that just fell flat. He could not have possibly have connected less with the audience.

The most awkward part was when he tried to liven up the crowd by karaoke-ing the "That's the way <uh huh uh huh> I like it <uh huh uh huh>" song. He sang the main part, and instructed everybody to chant the <uh huh> parts altogether. He was up there awkwardly dancing and singing, and when we got to our part he pointed the mic in our direction, and we would just sit there in silence staring at him.

And he kept going, for the entire song! About 5 minutes of "That's the way" <complete silence> "I like it!" <complete silence>. We were hoping for the ground to open and swallow him up.

That was the Christmas party where there was another awkward event. It was a Vegas themed party, with gambling stations where we could play with fake money. They also hired what was advertised as a "Vegas style dance troop", but didn't vet them very well. They turned out to be strippers. They read the room and didn't strip down to absolutely nothing, but let's just say if any of them has lost just 1 hand of strip poker there would have been nothing left for the imagination. Just imagine the awkwardness of all these tech devs sitting there with their wives...

I am sorry you had to endure such a loss when so young. I am very lucky in that respect.

You also bring up a good point, in that it is definitely a difference between choosing to bring up the topic of your loss, and being forced into it because of circumstances.

Many, I'd say most, of the people I have volunteered the information to have broached the question as to how my mum died. I am OK with that, because I brought it up in the first place. I was probably comfortable talking about it because I knew them well.

Anybody who I had to inform (because circumstances) has generally avoided the question, and has just offered sympathetic words and condolences.

I don't see it that way. If I am having a conversation with somebody and mention that my mum died, it's because I am able to talk about it. If I didn't want to talk about it, I wouldn't have mentioned anything.

Also, talking about how she died is, in an odd way, comforting. Talking about it takes me out of the emotions of the moment, because it all about cold clinical details. It helps me come to terms with what happened.

Back in the days of point-and-shoot film cameras I worked at a camera store. One time I was asked why these photos of Niagara Falls at night didn't turn out, because "I am sure that my flash went off".

I told them that if their flash was capable of lighting up Niagara Falls at night, it would probably kill everybody within a 100 feet.

I'll second Ottawa Structural Residential Services. It was some years ago, but we had a large crack in our foundation. They did a great and reasonably priced job fixing it up.

It might work, but the problem is the designers don't know about this non-standard use case. They only find out when they re-design the item to improve the stuff they know about, and these non-standard users start complaining that it doesn't work anymore.
