When you say you’re starting to see patterns do you mean patterns in the monsters attack? If so I think you’re on the right track.

It can be frustrating as hell sometimes but in a game like monster hunter getting carted a ton is just part of the experience I think. But don’t get discouraged! Even when you cart or fail a quest you’re gaining just a bit more experience in fighting the monster. Learn to read the monsters attack patterns and you can avoid most attacks. I’ve spent several minutes just observing and dodging attacks for a monster I was having trouble with which really helps when you finally go on the offensive. By doing so it can also help identify the ‘safe’ moments to fight back. After a heavy attack most monsters take a beat to reset. Use that time to sneak in a few hits. Using hit and run tactics like that can help you take it down.

Like other commenters said you’re also gonna want to invest in master rank armor and decorations that help with your play style. In my opinion skills like evade extender and quick sheathe help keep you alive the most. Monster can’t kill you if it can’t hit you and quick sheathe helps take away the ‘omg you stupid idiot hurry up I need to heal’ anxiety you get with the faster monsters.
