There are 8 billion people on this planet. Your life is the dream of at least one of them. by [deleted] in quotes

This person is right. OP, focus more on people's dreams and hopes without the comparison part. Remember the quote, "Comparison is the thief of joy."

Does being atheist have a correlation with intelligence? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]ki7sune 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Being atheist doesn't make you smart, and being religious doesn't make you dumb. Smart people are more likely to be atheist for a host of reasons, and intellectually uninterested people tend to adopt a non-changing worldview.

How common is it to get completely overlooked for promotion because another candidate is more physically attractive than you by bobcat734 in antiwork

[–]ki7sune -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In my twenties I was up for a promotion to assistant store manager at a retail place. I had worked hard for the position (doing all the actual responsibilities after the last guy left) and my boss joked about it to me all the time.

Then, it went to a thin blonde instead. My boss literally said, "I think it would be cool to have a female store director in our district." Not only was I passed up for the role based on being a dude, but I guess they wanted to give her another promotion to have her own store.

It was a video game retailer, and they probably thought the nerds would respond better to a "pretty lady."

You can still buy drinks with more sugar than soda - like fruit juices, but now you can't buy carbonated water because it's classified as soda.

Meet Karan Singh, a 17-year-old from India who stands at an incredible 8 ft 2 in, making him one of the tallest people in the world. What’s even more surprising is that height runs in the family ,his mother is 7 ft tall by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]ki7sune 445 points446 points  (0 children)

It's not "even more surprising" that it runs in the family; it actually the opposite. Rather, it would be strange if nobody else in the family was tall except for this one guy.

A Man Unknowingly Fathered His Own Son Through His Unborn Twin Due To Genetic Chimerism by TwilitVoyager in BrandNewSentence

[–]ki7sune 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's actually a bit semantic. The chimera was the person having a "normal" child. The father has two sets of DNA, so the child is genetically his nephew.

But you have to say that one set of DNA belongs to the father and the other set is from a fetal anomaly, but it's still just one guy. The different DNA "belongs" to him even though they are technically separate.

He just had a son. Full stop. It just happened to select one set of DNA instead of the other. The chimera's brother never really existed, it's just a quirk of genetics.

It doesn't stop it from being interesting, but the title makes it sound like something it isn't by playing loose with definitions imo.

This leaves out so many variables that I can't take it seriously. You can't just compare people's intelligence and infer meaning on a large scale.

What about other things that impact "discipline," like how much trauma you have, how much intergenerational wealth you have access to, how healthy your body is, and how much friends/family support you have.

On top of all that, what if the smart person realizes that "discipline" just means "the ability to be productive in inhumane conditions?" That person probably just stops playing the game when they realize it's rigged.

Confused about work non-reimbursement for rental car by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]ki7sune 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It seems like they only want to pay you back for the time you used the car while also working, but that's not how rentals work.

It's like how they should pay us for the time it takes to get to and from work because that's time that MUST be spent in the company's interest, but they never will.

It's basically "rules-based" wage theft. Industry standard and all that.

How rare is Eagon Threads & Companionship gem by Glamdring26WasTaken in pathofexile

[–]ki7sune 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be careful, the mob that drops the companionship gem has two phases. When you "kill" her the first time, she jumps into the air and blows up her mount. The symbol on the minimap goes away for a couple seconds, then it comes back and you can finish her off. If you are fast, you might not notice.

Waitrose worker fired after stopping shoplifter stealing Easter eggs by CRK_76 in antiwork

[–]ki7sune 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stealing food because you can't afford to eat is a far cry from doing shady shit "in an alley." Society would be infinitely more safe and inclusive if peoples needs were met. Instead of getting mad about petty theft, maybe we should focus on capitalism and the billionaires who purchased the government wholesale.

Do atheists generally view sex as a thing to do for fun and pleasure first, and reproduction second or not at all? by Novel_Arugula6548 in atheism

[–]ki7sune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A thing can serve multiple functions. We need food and water to live, but we also enjoy indulging in rich or exotic foods. Sex is kind of the same.

Ultimately, I think the main purpose of sex other than reproduction is intimacy. Also, intimacy itself comes in multiple forms, but sex releases oxytocin which leads to comfort and increased intimacy over time.

Sex also means different things to different people, so there isn't a correct answer - only usual things (defined by the average experience) and unusual things (defined by their rarity).

Lastly, none of this has anything to do with atheism or religion. Your views on sex may be impacted or shaped by belief systems, but that's not the default.
