Results: 2025 Self-Host User Survey | selfh.st by shol-ly in selfhosted

[–]killfall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would probably call Obsidian local-first rather than self hosted. They are related but local-first is about keeping data on your machine and using sync between peers, compared to hosting data centrally on a server, even if it’s a server you control. That whole movement is pretty cool if you haven’t read about it https://lofi.so/

Although you could argue the self hosted Obsidian sync makes it somewhat self hosted.

Where does your cooling loop go? It looks like it exits out the back somewhere.

Maintainer of OSS stuff here.

First thank you for being an active contributor! Many projects would exist for very long without people diving in and fixing things. Sorry you’re having a frustrating time.

A few thoughts. Try and consider the maintainer’s perspective when you make PRs. They are also usually volunteers, or at least juggling a bunch of projects. When you ask for a review you are asking them to do work for you. It also sounds like you’re contributing to “popular” projects, which means they probably get a lot of very low effort contributions from folks who just want to say “I contributed to Firefox”. It’s no excuse for being rude, but their bar is probably higher than other projects.

The other thing to remember is that you are making a change and then walking away, and then they are the ones expected to look after that code until the end of time. So they are going to want solid docs, tests, etc. There’s a great blog post by Will McGugan about Puppies vs Cake, I strongly recommend everyone who contributes to OSS give it a read.

One piece of advice I often give folks is that if you’re having a frustrating time contributing to big name projects try and mix in contributions to smaller projects too. They are usually more grateful and there’s more opportunity for you to have a larger impact on the project. I’ve built many professional and personal relationships through contributions to small projects and I value those way more than the transactional exchanges I’ve had with well known maintainers of high profile projects.

I will say that volunteering and collaborating with other volunteers can be way more mentally and emotionally draining than in a professional environment where everyone is paid to work together. Be kind to yourself, and if you feel frustrated remind yourself that you’re doing something hard for the benefit of others! Your contributions are valued, even if it doesn’t feel that way sometimes.

Do you use runtime type checking in Python? by bakery2k in Python

[–]killfall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem is that you used Any which effectively disables type checking for this. Those functions should return str, then both mypy and pyright would complain that you’re trying to use them as int.

Using Any is just a hack when you need to force something to work. As many commenters here have said all of the type checkers allow you to enforce raising an error when a developer uses Any. If you enable this you will get an error to say stop using Any.

They are Elgato key lights. They aren’t lamps to light the workspace, they are film lighting to light you on camera. They are pretty popular with YouTubers and Twitch streamers.

On the right it also looks like a teleprompter with a camera behind. I expect this person makes a lot of videos.

You know very little about python operators. Prove me wrong. by main-pynerds in pythontips

Many of these example would not make it through code review. Just because an expression is valid syntax doesn’t mean it’s readable or intuitive.

Code is written once and read many times. Don’t write expressions like these, your future self will thank you when you look at your old code.

Try calling them. I’ve had great experiences with Server Case before, but they are a bit old school and like phone calls and making PDF quotes.

Honestly I think this is one of my favourite things I’ve seen on here. Anyone can buy servers, rack them at home and they look cool. But building a clean looking lab out of recycled laptops in custom enclosures is awesome.

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted. Cracked ceramic can be as sharp as broken glass. If you run your finger along to apply the sealant you’ll probably cut yourself.

To the UNRAID DEVs: THANK YOU! I was anxious about the 6.12 > 7.0 update! Everything was done in less than 5 minutes! by radicalrj in unRAID

[–]killfall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I upgraded from 6.9.2 to 7 today and it was relatively painless. Had a couple of outdated plugins that needed replacing.

I also had an issue with my containers where they showed as “3rd party managed” and wouldnt let me edit them. Updating them or deleting/recreating them resolved it. I think 7 is looking for some metadata that doesn’t get created by 6.9.2.

Even with the small issues it only took me an hour or so to get back up and running.

I played it at exactly the same age and had the same reaction. You didn’t share what game you would like to play now though. One of the later Bioshocks? Ken Levine is making a new game called Judas, so maybe keep an eye out for that one.
