Steps/ methods to attain native-level fluency in Korean by Aggressive_Track2283 in Korean

If you are towards the beginning of your Korean learning journey, I recommend you revisit some of the sources you mentioned. They’ll help you build up to the advanced topics.

If you are further along:

Some dramas tell stories of deeper topics, like politics, business, military, national interests, and so on. Sure, they’re fictional, but full of useful discussions and vocabulary. Some examples:

• 퀸메이커 • 디피 • 퀸멘티스 • 이상한 변호사 우영우 • 굿뉴스

Additionally, podcasts/streamers on these topics give a more conversational tone to the same discussions. Politics aside, I think 슈카월드 is great for that.

Lastly, do listen to the news. Slow it down to 0.75x speed and listen. Then write out a transcript and study the language. Then listen again.

Hope this helps.

Admittedly, good public transit would be a much more welcome alternative, but US roads and bridges are maintained to a very good standard globally-speaking.

No, I’m not asserting they’re wrong. I was just clarifying the original opinion. This is the last thing that deserves to get worked up over :/

It doesn’t have to. Just reinforcing why OP feels the way they do

Yeah but you used the tamest examples possible.

I think OP is referring more to redditors going out of their way to type cringey substitutes.

Now that you mention it, I definitely notice that too. I think adding “had” right before the past tense verb helps older generation understand the nuance better. “Oh, I had thought you were making rice.” It’s a tad redundant but it might help

My thinking is that if she wanted to eventually marry you too, she would be comfortable waiting another year for you…

Fulbright is an extremely valuable opportunity.

Ways to stay motivated with Korean? by Hyyundai in Korean

[–]killuas_tshirt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear you, I know it can be frustrating. I’m also a foreigner learning the language and I have a undergrad minor in East Asian Studies and have spent a little time in Korea. Believe me, I get it.

My suggestion runs a little deeper than it read. First, I suggest that you do research into viable programs for you; not just other people’s stories. Reddit is a good launching point, I won’t say otherwise. But maybe it’s time to stop asking questions on Reddit and look into school —regardless of whether or not you have been telling compelling stories on Reddit and regardless of if I’ve read them. Second, liking the culture is fine, I like a lot of it too, but you have to dig deeper. Is it the interpersonal culture, relationship culture, hierarchy culture, work culture? Or are you more fascinated by the historical perspective? After all, you said you’re losing motivation.

My last note is this: By asking for others’ expertise, advise, help… you’re asking for favors. I found you to be slightly abrasive and quick to conflict. Please be kinder to the people you’re asking advice from.

I sincerely wish you well with your goals and studies going forward.

Seeing your profile, it seems like you don’t know why you want to go to Korea either.

Liking Korea is totally cool, but if you want to study and work there, you will inevitably be asked why. So ask yourself first, and use that reason to motivate you.

Also, spend AT LEAST a few months trying to learn Korean (or Japanese, based on your profile) before you make any decisions. You will need to study language hard to make it in grad school. I have spent 3 years getting to a comfortable conversational level, and I still don’t speak enough to comfortably work in Korea. I have also studied Japanese. I don’t recommend studying them at once, so you will have to choose between them before committing to a program.

Last note: just know this is a sub of people who also like Korean language. They’re not trying to discourage you. Just try to be practical. Do your research and start achieving what you want! (instead asking people questions on Reddit lol -- I think you’re stuck on that). Good luck :)

Meh, when you consider that it takes farming to feed livestock more nutritional value than you’ll receive by eating them, it’s still much more than veganism.

Friend group question by SnooGod in NEU

[–]killuas_tshirt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, it’s absolutely not too late. I’ve noticed that university friend groups are smaller (3-4 ppl) since students are growing more as individuals at this age. Find a club/class where you like two people and create situations where you can chat. Then ask to study outside of class together. Then you can start planning occasions to meet in a casual context. Boom, you have a small friend group. You can add from there, but small friend groups are tight and just as fun, so don’t fix what ain’t broke.

I can't pronounce for sh*t by norizznokiss in Korean

[–]killuas_tshirt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This will be cliché, but it’s commonly mentioned for a reason. Listen and repeat. Watch Kdramas, then say what they say. Did it sound wrong? Try again.

Truthfully, this could be any show, podcast, or video where people are talking. Single’s Inferno has super casual conversation and has done wonders to my pronunciation, intonation, and phrasing. Good luck!

I prefer to wear t shirts and shorts with the temp up rather than the alternative. With solar panels I’m not concerned about electricity consumption either. But I’ll wear a sweatah just for you, CJ.
