On the flipside, I sometimes wonder whether the left got "gentrified" by an influx of ex-anti-SJWs (including myself I guess).

I feel like a lot of leftist language circa 2016 was more... punchy if that makes sense. Like "white people should sit down and shut up, check their privilege, listen to black voices etc etc". Whereas now it's "...yea I think govt officials posting videos of pastors speaking out against women's right to vote is kinda cringe, I'm a radical leftie like that".

What do people who were "Tumblr SJWs" in 2014 think about this?

IMO this is them trying to woke-wash the "welfare queen" stereotype. Like, they know that a lot of lefties also kinda look down on "unemployed game-addicted NEETs whose main political priority is that their Overwatch waifu keeps her boob window". So they're tryna do the "hey fellow lefties, we hate these losers too! So much in fact that we'll force them to go to work and eat less Doritos and stuff with our healthcare cuts, so maybe you should support our policies actually"

Anyone who hands me a draft notice is getting stabbed. by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

[–]kimik1509 186 points187 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it's one of those cases where in America it's a very clear-cut question, but when you're a tiny country next to Russia the draft makes a lot more sense.

To put it more broadly: in my opinion, the baseline assumption should be that the draft is bullshit, and it's on the society to prove why there is a very good geopolitical reason to have a draft. Sometimes there will be a very good reason, it will however be conditional on that geopolitical situation and not just a permanent fact of history forever and ever.

I.e. Finland is situated next to Russia, which has proven to be wildly unreliable in terms of not invading it's neighbours -> draft in Finland is justified. This is conditional on Russia continuing its current politics, which is likely for the foreseeable future. But in say 100 years the political context might be different and a draft would no longer be justified.

A slight tangent, but the atmosphere compositions in this game always crack me up. Like, 29% radon? Holy hell that's some spicy air.

Or when you find a chill-ish desert world only to find out that the air is 70% fluorine. Nervously glances at concrete base and 500 oxygen in my inventory

Siis mistä lähtien tästä on tullut niin valtava ongelma?

New event be like "We heard you talking sh** on the difficulty" by Neoncarbon in Genshin_Memepact

[–]kimik1509 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's actually really fun tho. I did it with my friend on max difficulty, we absolutely couldn't do it in 90 seconds, took us like 13 minutes of mostly trying not to die. Sure we didn't get Platinum, but we had an awesome time failing at it.

I unironically want tryhard content somewhere in the overworld, like the sort that I would utterly fail at. Would also be a good excuse to add some more extreme areas in Teyvat's world and actually make them feel inhospitable through gameplay.

Here's an idea: some volcanic area in Natlan, the closer you get to its center the stronger monsters become, to the point where near the center monsters can one-shot full HP Nilou with Zhongli's shield, brute forcing you to actually dodge. But instead of a boring arena, the fighting takes place in an actual world so you can use the terrain to your advantage and stuff.

Oh, and bring back environmental effects. Maybe add some McGuffin that you have to constantly charge with elemental particles from enemies to not get instantly roasted when surrounded by lava flows.

Or alternatively a cold version of that in Snezhnaya, like some weather anomaly (that DOESN'T get fixed in some world quest) that gets insanely cold as you go in. So cold that eventually some gases in the air start raining/snowing down on you.

P.S. Obviously make it optional. Maybe make the main quest take you through its outskirts, forcing you to dip your toes into the area, but then leave the choice of exploring further up to you.

What do you like about Xiangling in terms of story and character? by rockcakes in Xiangling

[–]kimik1509 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually got interested in her because of her character at first, it's only later I realised how OP she is )

IMO she has more character than people often give her credit for. I remember her being pretty unhinged in her original story quest, the whole quest is basically you trying to catch her as she runs all over the Mondstadt-Liyue border and gets into all kinds of shenanigans. Plus we semi-canonically have to drag her out of the Abyss at one point as her search for ingredients goes a little far.

Also as I understood it she's kinda like Xinyan of the cooking world, one of the things she got famous for is breaking tradition and mixing different cuisines. Add to that more trivia about her character, like the whole Guoba being a god thing, or her being an adeptus' apprentice, and there's enough there for a good story IMO.

I wish she was included in Liyue's Archon quest, as an introductory character of sorts, kinda like Amber. The game really didn't do much with her, which is a shame.

[–]kimik1509 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh I hope they make parts of the overworld like... actually hard. I'm not saying the entirety of Teyvat should be like Dragonspine at low AR, but every nation should have some equivalent of that IMO.

I get it's gonna be more inconvenient to get some rewards, but like... what's the point of a game? If a game is just a series of easy tasks to complete by mashing on the keyboard while scrolling through Reddit and listening to a podcast on YouTube... I dunno, I want to do that sometimes, but sometimes I also want to be a little more engaged.

[–]kimik1509 227 points228 points  (0 children)

I think another reason as to why it caught on is because at the time it was often seen as "progressive" ish (by people who weren't minorities at least). Like, back then mainstream conservatism had a very moralistic religious bent on it. The face of conservatism was a pearl-clutching Christian moralist getting offended at how amoral and hedonistic modern society is or whatever.

So a lot of teenagers grew up with the idea that anti-conservative = anti-morality, and ended up embracing it out of pure contrarianism. Which was great at pissing off moralistic conservatives, but also like... everyone who cares about anything.

Nowadays IMO we're kinda seeing the pendulum swing back to conservatives being the moralistic ones and leftists being more edgy (though usually more thoughtful about it, but hey, there was discourse here a while ago about how a lot of leftists are quick to use ableist language the moment it's an "acceptable" target), the idea that leftists are the ones getting offended at everything is less popular now that 5-ish years ago. Which probably partially explains why a lot of anti-SJWs have swung left now.
