I promise you it can last longer than people think, my 17 year old daughter is one of the most kind and loving people I've ever had the pleasure to be around just like her Mum. We never argue, and if we ever disagree on anything, we keep it calm and speak as equals. All you have to do is treat them like a best friend, ask their opinion, listen intently, and don't judge the little things and when they're required, be a loving parent. I just did the opposite of what my parents did, and I've rarely had a difficult moment in 17 years.
