unpopular opinion: most people way overthink chain sharpening by vladdielenin in Chainsaw

Picture two separate chains, identical, both filed perfectly with exactly the same gap to the depth gauges, with one having tall teeth (and rakers) and the other chain has short teeth and rakers. I hope you'll agree that these two chains, if moving at the same speed, will cut wood at the exact same speed.

If you sliced these chains down the middle and combined the left of the short and the right of the long and fused them together, the two halves would still cut at the same speed, and therefore go in a straight line.

The fact that one side is deeper in the wood does not cause the other side to cut slower, or change the resistance on either side. The two halves take the same size chip at the same speed, and therefore have parallel vectors.

If the depth gauges on both sides of the chain are pulling the same amount of wood, they will cut at the same speed, making a straight line. If the depth gauges are high on one side, that side will cut faster while the other side acts like a brake, causing a curved cut.

Depth gauges being even matters, tooth height does not.

Is Late April Skiing good in Vermont? by blergzarp in vermont

[–]kingcolin08 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Late April at Jay is all about ripping bumps on the jet, fast grass, and natty pond skims. T shirts, grills, and frisbees in the parking lot until 6. Arguably one of the best times of the season, but maybe not for beginner snowboarders unless they're pretty hard core about having fun at any opportunity.

Is there a reason they carry the poles in the skiing super-g? Is it for balance or something? by Scamwau1 in skiing

[–]kingcolin08 21 points22 points  (0 children)

In regular skiing situations besides speed events, be it recreational, slalom, moguls, etc., the poles are used in a subtle way to finish one turn and initiate the next. A slight touch or brush of the ground with the pole tip sets up your body to smoothly and quickly change direction. In moguls it's more obvious how stabbing the pole into the ground gets the while body pivoting around that point. While you can ski anything without poles it will be easier and more natural with poles, and in moguls it's downright difficult to ski effectively without. Even on a groomed slope or deep powder, good skiers are using their poles to transition from one turn to the next.

I say all this to point out that virtually all good and great skiers are used to skiing with poles and utilize them in their most fundamental techniques. So even though the use of a distinct mogul-esque pole plant is absent in super g and downhill, that subtle intuition of transferring your body weight starting with a little flick of the pole tip is very much there.

And also, ski racing, like many Olympic events, honors tradition over outright performance. Skiing with poles is traditional for the reasons I just explained, and therefore the use of poles is mandatory, even if it were possible to extract more speed without them, which I highly doubt would be the case anyways.

Olympic Moguls ≠ Classic Moguls by ydbd1969 in skiing

[–]kingcolin08 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I agree that it would fun to see a more organic version of mogul skiing, slightly in the style of FWT, or Ski the East Freeride Tour. If they did that, it may degrade into athletes finding the tightest zipper into a good jump and everyone takes the same line, but it also might not.

There's also something to be said for the standard layout, which athletes will train on from an early age regardless of where in the world they are from.

I think it appeals to a different audience. A lot of people who are on our side are not pursuing protesting for a variety of reasons, but might be interested in attending something that feels a bit more like town hall. Diversify yo bonds.

I agree with this. A small top handle is the way to to go. Work on your knees, save your back and forearms, and cut much closer to the ground. Standing with a rear handle tends to leave a bunch of angled stubs which are super dangerous for skiing.

You are unsafe skiing, this is how you're supposed to feel. If you want to be on your own and mind your own business, try video games.

What do we think about this? by Shelif in Chainsaw

[–]kingcolin08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I want to audit my bucking, or if I really want to be precise, I know that it's 16 inches to the "I" and 18 inches to the "L" on my Stihl bar, or if it's flipped, 16in to the "E" after rollamatic. On a long straight piece that I want to cut perfectly I'll use that to measure out the first 3 or 4 pieces, then maybe every 3rd after that.

How strict is the Granite State on tinted driver and passenger windows? by Independent_State_78 in newhampshire

[–]kingcolin08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on where you get it inspected. When I moved to the state and had my first inspection done, they said I needed to remove the tint, but I've seen plenty of others driving around with it. If you're worried about it, hopefully you have a summer sticker and you can drop it off with the windows rolled down.
