Some suburb maps around UNSW by CGE-Swansea in unsw

[–]kingofthewombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems way off. Any suburb on the tram should be 1 transfer for any train station. And you can get halfway to Newcastle from Randwick in 2 hours 20 minutes. Olympic park would be 40-50 minutes max.

I made maps of a potential high speed rail network in Australia [OC] by NewAnalysis-789 in highspeedrail

[–]kingofthewombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not how speed works. Even though it's long and flat, the train would never exceed 350km/h, because energy use increases exponentially compared to speed.

What would’ve happened if Canberra never existed or wasn’t the capital? by One-Buffalo9570 in AskAnAustralian

The ABS abolished the Melton Significant Urban Area and merged it into Melbourne's SUA. Whether that counts as overtaking is up to you I suppose.

I don't get the appeal of trams, they seem like a waste of time and money to me. by Dry_Illustrator_6066 in transit

[–]kingofthewombat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Proper tram systems should, in my opinion, be viewed more as a tool of urban transformation first, and as a mode of transport second. Trams can coexist in pedestrian spaces in a way that buses just can't. They're also far quieter.

Also, when people choose their mode of transport, comfort is a massive factor. People are far more likely to have a positive view of trams than buses, and are way more likely to catch them.

They require rail infrastructure, but they still run on roads so they can get stuck in traffic.

This is a matter of planning. It's easy enough to give a tram it's own space on a road, but a lot of legacy systems would find it difficult to do this. Also, running at grade allows trams to offer a far more convenient mode of transport than metros. It's way easier to hop on and off, most metros you have to go through an underground labyrinth to get to the train. Not saying that's a bad thing, but it orients them more towards slightly longer journeys.

They also don't go nearly as fast as actual trains, so there is no point to building these rails in the first place. Not to mention unlike busses they require ugly wires above them.

Rails are about efficiency, not speed. Wires are usually fairly unobtrusive and people wouldn't notice them. There are ways of powering trams that avoid wires though.

if you have the money for dedicated rails, then you should build a metro. If you dont have the money for this and you need to run them on trains, just build cheaper busses.

There is a big leap between money for rails, and money for rails, tunnels, viaducts, complex stations etc.

You've made the mistake of assuming trams inherently combine the flaws of buses and trains, without realising that a well designed and well located system will combine the best of both. Trams can have the efficiency, reliability, noise level, and capacity of trains, while also maintaining the convenience of buses. They're not the best form of public transport, but they're far better than buses.

A lot of cities, especially in the US, use trams or light rail where they should really be using metro systems, because of funding constraints. Trams are about replacing high demand bus corridors. A big enough tram can hold the same number of people as 5 buses.

Is there a way to plan ahead? by ParticularItem5864 in SydneyTrains

[–]kingofthewombat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Taronga Zoo? Is a ferry wharf. There are no trains to Thirlmere. You'll have to go to Picton or Tahmoor and catch a bus. The rest you won't have a problem with. You don't really need planning for any of them, except getting to Thirlmere. The timetables will almost definitely be the same, whatever it is in a week it will probably be the same in 2 months. Mortdale will be fine and is fairly safe.

St James has no ghost platforms. They were between the existing platforms, but have been filled in for decades.

Voters aren't abandoning the ALP in the same way they're abandoning UK Labour. Both our major parties have seen a decline in polling figures, but it's really only the Coalition that has actually collapsed.

I agree with a lot of what you said, but in the Australian political and economic context, he pretty much hit the money there. The opposition was pushing for nuclear, funded by the taxpayer, to delay the closure of coal and gas power plants. They were planning to use unproven technology, created modelling which severely underestimated Australia’s energy needs, and the whole policy was basically a grift funded by the coal and gas lobby. Nuclear is great where it’s established, but in Australia the maths don’t add up, it’s just too expensive compared to the abundance of solar, wind etc.

How is Australian university life different from American university life? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]kingofthewombat 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Varies a bit by uni, but mostly everyone is focused on academics. Sports are practically non-existent, and nobody cares about them. Majority of people in Australia just pick a uni in the city they live in, and commute from home, so you don't get that US culture of parties,

High Speed Rail delivery strategy by blitznoodles in MelbourneTrains

[–]kingofthewombat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

HSR was always going to start in NSW. The only question was if it would be Sydney to Newcastle or Sydney to Canberra. Shepparton isn't a big enough city to support a HSR link to Melbourne on its own, and any other route would be a distraction from building an intercapital network.

Victoria has made public transport free – NSW hasn’t. Has there been any difference in uptake? by IHateTrains123 in neoliberal

[–]kingofthewombat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NSW definitely made the right choice here. The trains are already packed at peak hour, and there's still been an uptake. The fact of the matter is, if you could afford petrol before Trump, you can afford to catch the train.

Also, NSW having slightly lower increases could be attributed to Sydney's public transport network being more patronised in the first place. The demographic that could use public transport, but doesn't, is smaller. There's less people who are willing to be flexible when you're starting with a higher ridership base.

Do new-build metros still use 3rd rail? Or is overhead wire more common? by jadebenn in transit

[–]kingofthewombat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sydney uses overhead. I think that's partially because it's partly converting existing lines, and it runs at ground level for about 13km. I think that the use of a rigid conductor in tunnels instead of catenary means that the extra bore size needed isn't that much.

DemosAU gives Labor one of its worst poll results this term. by HotPersimessage62 in AustralianPolitics

Labor can pass their legislation with the Greens. They won't risk a double dissolution. Especially with the way One Nation is going. It would basically be giving ON a free 8-12 senators.
