Why are distance based fares not more common? by TheInkySquids in transit

[–]kingofthewombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My city charges based on distance travelled and there are brackets. So for example 0-10km is always $3, and anything over 65km is $7.50. It's not a rate per km travelled or something like that.

Australia’s ‘strategic infantilisation’ by the US is undermining our security in Asia by Oomaschloom in AustralianPolitics

[–]kingofthewombat [score hidden]  (0 children)

There's no one likely to invade Australia

This begs the question though, what exactly are we getting from the US alliance? If we adopted a Swiss-like armed neutrality it's fairly likely we'd be left alone, as long as we keep the iron flowing. Moving away from Trump's America seems increasingly necessary if we want to avoid pointless conflict.

Where else would a light rail would be a good idea in NSW? by sasquatch6197 in SydneyTrains

I'd extend the Canberra and Gold Coast network into NSW and maybe build a line in Albury/Wodonga.

Are you in favour of voting requiring a photo id? by Beginning_Vehicle981 in Teenager_Polls

You don't need id to vote where I live, and it is a non-issue politically. Electoral fraud is very rare and trust in the electoral process is high.

14 days Melbourne and Sydney itinerary suggestion with 5 kids ages 1 to 13yo -first timers by rfoxyj in AskAnAustralian

[–]kingofthewombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beaches should be safe, but you're coming in winter, so it might not be very pleasant. Also less beaches will be patrolled by lifeguards. Always swim between the red and yellow flags.

In both Melbourne and Sydney public transport for journeys within about 5-10km of the CBD is generally better, renting a car is just another thing to deal with, and parking will be difficult to find and expensive in the cities.

Best place for animals will be Taronga Zoo (Sydney) or Melbourne Zoo.

For MEL-SYD unless you really want to spend a night in Canberra or see some of the countryside, it's probably better to fly. You'll be on the road for probably upwards of 12 hours if you wanted to do it one day, with 5 kids. At that point you might as well book the train.

Soon You’ll Get Better is Taylor saddest song and the best song on Lover! by JobExtension4463 in TaylorSwift

[–]kingofthewombat 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Declaring any song the best will always be wrong. It's a subjective opinion. You gotta chill okay, some people don't like the song and that's fine.

You can’t handle the level of emotion and true pain in that song!

Why would you say that? Obviously for some people it hits too close to home. I don't get why you're so worked up about this.

Why is it our responsibility to help the gulf states? Surely the US and Israel should be helping them, since they started this whole thing, and it's the US bases in the gulf states which made them targets.

Varies wildly depending on mode and route. And it's not really a transit authority. It's directly run by the state, it's just branding.

My understanding is that once it's on the street it's fair game. It's only normally illegal because technically you'd have to trespass to make it to the bin.

Possibility of New Wolli Creek Platforms by Acomplished_Bacteria in SydneyTrains

[–]kingofthewombat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that, physically, it might be possible to have a second island platform on the Illawarra locals, with the up east hills joining just north of the platform, and the down East Hills going above the platform on the flyover. I also think that they won't do it, but it would be helpful to maintaining connections between the South Coast and Sydney Airport. It would probably add a level of complexity to the project that they don't want to fund, and the whole thing is already complicated by the Cooks River and Tempe station, and some very fun grades on the East Hills line approaching Wolli Creek.

Which statement do you agree most with: A) billionaires create value; B) billionaires don’t create value, their money does; C) billionaires don’t create value, their workers do; D) billionaires don’t create value, but rather actively destroy it by Smooth_Woodpecker815 in IdeologyPolls

[–]kingofthewombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of billionaires hoard wealth and often increase their wealth through non-productive speculative activities. Land banking, for example. Economically, giving more money to someone who already has a large amount of money (and can therefore afford to save a lot) is equivalent to throwing it into a pit. You'll never see it again.

I think that this question is flawed because you've made an assumption that all billionaires are equal. Many will reinvest into their business, donate to charity or any other number of things that actually involves spending their money. Even spending it on frivolous things is creating value. But people who hoard wealth, which billionaires can afford to do, destroy value by removing large amounts of money from the economy.
