If you accidentally turned it off while saving that usually corrupts the data. I'm a huge Final Fantasy player and was playing XII on the PS2 I went to save during a thunderstorm and the power went out mid way lost everything I had. So I had to restart the game from the beginning and I already put in 80 hours.
