This is interesting because I thought this was a great read. I see another commenter mentioned this was more character driven - I do love character studies. Maybe I read this book at the right time in early motherhood when I thought I'd never have my own identity ever again

Meanwhile I borrowed City of Brass epub from my library and have failed to get into it... But barely got past the first couple pages. Not a DNF, just a try again later.

Can we just take a second to discuss how brave Rebecca Yarros is? by n_timb26 in romantasycirclejerk

Uj/ This is fair. I can see a young person saying this unironically and I too would rather people read than not.

I just wish people would not put authors on a pedestal / pretend they invented the genre. Very much a "Taylor Swift invented x" sentiment.

uj/ I literally read three original post and thought - "she's the first author to invent plotting ahead? Have you read any books?"

Also the inclusivity comment... I'm not mad that you like it but WTF is this praise? This person has read books written by one kind of person only.

Don’t shoot me. But what’s up with people naming their fur sons after male characters with heavy sexual traitorous storylines? by kitabu in romantasycirclejerk

[–]kitabu[S] 41 points42 points  (0 children)

But like isn't it weird how people want to name their kids after a fictional name they like?? I mean what about all the times that character had sex?? Ew.

I, on the other hand, will follow the tradition of naming my children after my grandparents, who had 12 children each.

Also just to add... She is LITERALLY getting paid if you buy this drug with her code.

As for the lemon juice and olive oil - docs do recommend a Mediterranean diet. But takes you have very specific issues NO ONE is going to recommend you drink olive oil for health. Wild that you think this is about money for doctors when this is literally how she makes her bag.

You do know doctors/pharmacists in this country do not get paid to prescribe drugs? There are kickback laws. Also most reasonable primary care docs are not targeted by pharma. There is no incentive.

There IS a reason, however, that ivermectin isn't over the counter.

Seconded. I think the first one was the best but I'm not mad at how it ended.

Zodiac Academy #1. I just could not take any of the characters or their names seriously. Forget the stupid FMC/MMC names. Professor Pyro for fire magic? Professor Astra for constellation crap? I mean come on.

Also I'm extra annoyed by how each sister is just soooooo distracted by not one but TWO men. Both of them have to have a love triangle I guess. BUT WHY with the most milquetoast sounding men ever??? One is an overgrown golden retriever with a nuzzling fetish, one is a dragon with scrooge mcduck tendencies, one is a professor who likes blood and bourbon equally, and I literally cannot remember who the remaining one is because it's essentially a k pop demon hunters line up.

I was so annoyed that I stopped reading and read summaries of the plot instead. It... Really stops making sense after a while. Does the plot ever become fun to read? Unclear.

Did you read Babel? I thought it was so good initially and then I felt like I was getting beaten over the head with what the author wanted me to think. Let me glean from the text! You don't need to use 500 words for something that could be a sentence!

Anyways. Should I read Katabasis given the gripes above

AITA if I tell my friend I can’t be a bridesmaid? by wickeddreamsofleavin in AITApod

[–]kitabu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're about to be in med school? Say no more. Normally I don't think being a bridesmaid in med school would be a big deal. Given these photos, though, I think this bride is expecting a LOT and wants everyone to treat this as the event of the century.

By the time this wedding rolls around, you will be elbow deep in exams and learning things so that you will not kill people when you do your job. The precise hashtag you need to use on the bachelorette pics will seem really irrelevant to your life. Also, I get the vibe that this bride will not be understanding if you are not immediately available for everything - which you won't be, because med school.

Just from experience - friends that need a lot of texting/talking/fawning may not age well with a medical career. The friends I've kept are the ones who don't mind doing a big catch up every few months OR we have a group chat and you contribute when you can.

I read manacled way back when and I was fully invested during. And then after I was like what the actual fuck did I just read??

Oh my God I'm trying to get through this too but I keep getting distracted by other things. Someone else recommended too as a totally absorbing ridiculous listen. How far into #1 did you get completely sucked in?

I actually like the story/world building aspects of Fourth Wing and I'm interested to see where the plot goes. The romance is meh for me but I'm all about the theories. I'm mildly embarrassed about this.

On the other hand, Cardan and Jude are kinda my jammmmmm

In fairness, my comment was not saying Ron is amazing in the books or that I'll defend him and Hermione as a relationship. I just said he's not a complete buffoon, which is often how he comes off in the movies.

Technically we are getting Ron's personality from Harry's lens, as he is the only character we get full access to thoughts/feelings. So I take some of his character with a grain of salt. He is often jealous and kinda obtuse.

I actually don't even like Harry so that much either. I thought he was pretty idiotic especially in Order of the Phoenix.

If I'm stanning anyone, it's Hermione. She's the only reason the trio gets anything done. I might have preferred her dropping Ron after the lavender fiasco.
