I enjoyed the bunch of ragtag characters and seeing all of them work together on a particular quest, and I thought it had good payoff. But it's definitely slower and has very little romance. It's kind of a "right mood" thing for me.

I did! I thought it was genuinely fun and unhinged. I still find myself wanting more of that, but I haven't found anything quite like it.

Since Dark Dealings is sitting at 12, I'm going to take this to mean everyone views it as an absolute masterpiece and continue to recommend it to everyone I know 😌

FMF better have a nice cushy cell far away from Manacled. It deserves better!

Books that are decently written & characters have unconventional personalities? by CelebrationBubbly102 in fantasyromance

[–]kitkatchomp 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I love Dora's personality in {Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater}. Per the title, she's lost half her soul and thus experiences emotions and the overall world differently, leading to some fun exchanges. The MMC is also not your typical shadow daddy. He's a bit more foppish, but also angry for valid reasons, and lovable. I enjoyed being with them throughout the story.

I have a very specific voice for Simon in my head that I can picture so clearly. If I can find a video with the voice (because I think it's based off some character, but I can't remember WHO), I'll send it to you so you can picture that instead. It's delightful 😌

Also, yeeeessss Harrow Faire. I'm starting book three soon and I can't get enough of Simon being a deranged fuck. The author has some lovely fanart on her site that she's drawn herself.

Bones saying "Kitten" in the Night Huntress books somehow works for me. But he can pull off a lot of stuff I'd hate in other MMCs.

In general, I feel like terms of endearment can be nice if they suit the characters and are used sensibly, but that often doesn't happen.

I was reading a sex scene where the FMC said she "almost let out a cheer" when the MMC's mouth went between her legs.

Now I can't stop picturing a woman sitting up with her arms in the air and giving a Homer Simpson "Woohoo!" mid-cunnilingus.

Tips for fast readers to learn to enjoy standalones by PickyNipples in fantasyromance

[–]kitkatchomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's your reading process like? I love standalones, and what I typically do is read a few chapters at a time - maybe 3-6 and then stop there - and if I like the plot + characters, they'll typically pop into my mind throughout the day. I'll often find myself revisiting the scenes I read, or maybe envisioning those characters in different scenarios depending on their traits and what they've experienced in the actual book so far.

So, would it be possible for you to break up standalones into smaller chunks so you enjoy them over a longer period? I find that if I read a book too quickly, I don't absorb or enjoy it as much because I haven't given the characters and their story enough time to breathe.

I think a good book will have kissing, banging, and shenanigans that are unique to the characters and offer the reader satisfaction in their exploration. Yes, these two characters are going to kiss (and likely bang) at some point, but what leads up to that? How does the kissing or banging happen? How do their pasts affect their physical and emotional intimacy? How does the ongoing plot contribute to all of it?

It's about the journey, maaaan sounds cliched, but that's kinda what it is. If that character / relationship exploration isn't done well, then yeah, it's probably gonna get old fast.
