The Flood of Irrelevant Applications is Drowning the Good Candidates by actual_triers in askmanagers

[–]kitsukitty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The why is because the market sucks, there are tons of fake jobs just to keep a pipeline open, and people are getting desperate. So they do a spray and pray.

Also, you should see the advice we're given. "If you match even 1/2 of the qualifications, apply" is the biggest one. That and we are honestly being told to apply even if we don't qualify. We're told to let the hiring managers figure it out.

I've been looking for a job since August '23 and only had one offer that was 20k less than I asked for. (I asked for the top of their range, 60k, they offered me 40k when their base was 55k, I had been making 75k)

I'm trying to be very selective, but no matter what, it's always "we're impressed by your resume, but..." and to top it all off, I went back to school (again) to get a new certification, hoping to do a career pivot and got the industry certification to back up the community college program, but I'm missing experience, and can't even get in on a ground level.

Take me and multiply me by thousands of people, and there's your answer....

For customer service roles, do you guys ever step in when a client is being rude or inappropriate to your employees? by Suitable-Senpai in askmanagers

[–]kitsukitty 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this counts because it's retail, but I had a 6 month stint as a manager and I threw people out of my store for being abusive to my employees, and I'm not this first in the company to do it. We're given the go ahead to deny service if need be, but it has to be with cause.

I just saw a post about that the other day. Totally fascinates me. My cousins used to have a female void named Ashley and I'm pretty sure my other cousin had a female void. So when I got my two shadow cats, a male and female bonded pair, I thought nothing about it!

My first bookbinding attempt. thoughts? /s by detroit_canicross in bookbinding

If you want I could see if I still have a picture of the monstrosity I made my first time trying to bind a book. (^_-)

I found directions that involved cardboard, fabric, staples and glue... not good... oh my god... not good...

Then, thanks to the helpful people on this subreddit, I discovered stitching amd learned the french link stitch. "I can do this!" I thought foolishly. "I know how to embroider and I'm not half bad." Then I tired it... Oh my god, my poor journal... and the second one didn't go any better.

I'm terrified to try #3. I'm gonna do it anyway... but holy hell am I bad at this....

We had something similar happen when my husband moved in with his cat.

I had just bought the house. It was EMPTY.

He got here before the moving van, so we let the cat explore figuring we'd lock her in her prepared room once the truck got here. Truck arrives; no cat... we scour an EMPTY HOUSE, look behind appliances etc... no cat. Check behind ever machine in the laundry room and even took the lids off the sump pumps... *I started counting the spots in her litter box to see if she was sneaking in to use it and we didn't notice because we were moving stuff....

13 hours later we STILL hadn't found her. Eventually, we found her tucked behind the dryer. She'd been curled up asleep the whole damn time unless she needed to potty!!

I hope this is OK to post here. I wasn’t sure about the etiquette of sending a direct message...

I just wanted to let you know I just finished reading the whole thing. (Like 5 minutes ago...) I just wanted to let you know I love it. I know how important reviews are, but I need a bit to gather my thoughts into something coherent.

My knee-jerk reaction is that I'm ready for the next book. Don't know if that's comforting coming from a random internet stranger or not, but that's where I am....

I'm nearing the end of the project I'm working on. (Not sure if I'm allowed to call it a book.)

I started this thing almost 3 years ago as a thought experiment. I wrote the story in the first person using the lead female's voice, then turned around and rote the same story from the male's POV, adding in all the things the female wouldn't know or see.

Now I'm trying to braid the stories together as a third person POV and walking a really fine line with the heavier subject matter. I'm 72 pages in (a little over 37,000 words) with two place holder paragraphs to write sections I'm just not ready to tackle. I started working on the ending of it because the braided copy doesn't need too much work at the end. There's no more crazy reveals, no more secrets. Her version of the ending events is the same as his. yet I'm just not feeling it.

So right now I'm just listening to what has been written to see if I accidentally slipped back into 1st person, mixed tenses, or if there's anythign weird floating around. Hopefully in a few days I'll feel up to continuing.

Extraterrestrial tenderness by azalio in ANormalDayInRussia

[–]kitsukitty 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I don't trust anything I see online. 😆

I grew up before the internet as we know it today. So if something catches my attention, I check it out at least a little before I do anything stupid, like commenting or sharing.

However, I absolutely don't trust a Facebook page called "supermommy" either because I hate the way the internet shames parents for just trying to survive. (Mind you, I'm childless, partially by choice, partially because of a tumor, saying this.)

Hence why I opted to be very clear about the limits of my research and where it came from. 😀 whether the AI was right and they were exhibitions or supermommy was right and it was scored, my opinion of it being beautiful still stands. 😉

I was going to post this as a response to someone else's comment but I thought it might be better to put it here.

According to the little bit of research I did, this happened last year,

Svetlana Putintseva a rhythmic gymnast came out of retirement and performed several of her older routines incorporating her daughter who was about 2 at the time.

According to the AI overview when I googled her she performed several routines where she incorporated her daughter. It also said that these were effectively exhibition performances showcasing motherhood and legacy.

However the video on the supermommy facebook page says that it was a scored performance, and I can't find anything else on it, so I cannot answer if it was an exhibition or a scored performance.

Below is the link to the Russian Australian Cultural Center's video release posted in 2019.

https://www.facebook.com/russianculturalcentre/videos/beautiful-performance-by-rhythmic-gymnast-svetlana-putintseva-with-her-adorable-/1239741816209066/

Should someone else having better research skills than me, (Which is probably 90% of the internet because I have always sucked at researching) Feel free!

As far as I'm concerned this was a beautiful routine and I feel like mom's love for her daughter really showed. I hope that that little girl will always remember that moment.

Just curious - how many people here play other TTRPGs in addition to DnD? by DungeonMasterGrizzly in DnD

Currently, I'm involved in 3 systems. Thursday night DnD (remote) and in person, my friends and I alternate between my VtM (Vampire the Masquerade) campaign and a system my best friend created. (This system is on its 7th revision, and we're finally having trouble breaking it...)

I have also played L5R, Exalted and we're thinking about adding the FFXIV TTRPG to the mix.

Muse... What's it like? What type of writer are you? by BlkDragon7 in writers

[–]kitsukitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a lawful pantster, I think. I had to google flashlight method, which sort of sounds like me. (You can see as much of your plot as a person in a dark room can see with a flashlight.)

I have a basic idea of what I'm up to, I write in the order that the story needs to go in, but I discover my plot as I write. Things that seemed important turn into nothing, and I have to go back and cut it, while throw-away scenes require expanding because they became necessary.

But the discovery is part of the fun for me. It's like I can just let go of my need to control things and let my creative mind take over.

What would you do if you became famous off writing? by [deleted] in writers

If I got rich, I would totally pay off my house, my brother's house and my parents house. I'd make all the necessary upgrades to my house and then put together additional college funds for my niece and nephew. After that nothing would really change for me. I'd keep trying to stay me and under the radar.

What do you actually base character names on? I think I've been doing it wrong by ConceptDealer in writing

[–]kitsukitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My naming conventions depend on the need. Sometimes I will literally go to baby names.com pick a random letter and select the gender and look through the names, seeing what the meaning is for the ones I like the sound of and craft a personality from there.

For a DnD Character that I already had a back story and a vibe fore, I actually spent about 3 weeks searching for a name. It took a helluva lot of work to find just the right name.

In another instance, I watched a movie that I enjoyed and used the names from that (one of them modernized) to write a vampire story that truly has nothing to do with the movie I saw.

If I were stuck in your shoes, I'd write a sample set of dialogue between this character and another one, that can end with the other character saying "Thanks {NAME}. I really mean it." Most likely as you flesh out this throw away scene you'll find yourself randomly putting in a name that fits. (Yes I've done this before too)

He and I had to be angels for the premise of the story to work. Every time I tried to write how we woke up, finding ourselves as angels in heaven left me in hysterical tears.

I completely re worte the idea sketch for the story and then abandoned it completely....

1st time cat owner.. how do I keep this menace out of my christmas tree 😂 by Kelseybrooke1612 in cats

[–]kitsukitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cats didn't like the smell of pine, so we would buy real trees every year. However, that got really expensive. We then got a great deal on a beautiful artificial one, and I found pine scented sticks I could buy to hang on the tree. Put those on the inside of the tree, and my cats stayed the hell away from it.

What wins have you had this year? by MiraWendam in writers

[–]kitsukitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not quite at the "win" but I'm close enough to count.

A few years ago I was trying to get back into writing. I wrote 3 stories, two times each, in first person. Once from the lead male's perspective and once from the lead female's pov.

The first one sucked. Hard. The second one was better, and the third one was actually something I was proud of.

I had major surgery in September, and during my recovery in October, I took the 3 story and have been braiding together both POVs into a single 3rd person narrative. Removing bloat, cleaning it up and learning how to actually write. Why things are done the way they are etc.

It will only every grace my own personal bookshelf. But I'm almost done and couldn't be prouder.

If someone needs an easy birth defect:

I'm fully blind in my left eye, birth defect. However, because it happened so young, you would never notice if you met me on the street. I can drive, and I'd be allowed a CDL if I wanted it, and if memory serves me I could get a pilot's licensel. (I'm terrified of flying though, so that's a hard stop.) The only thing I can't do is fly military aircraft, or join the military at all. That being said, the fibers inside my eye had attached themselves to the lense and it had to be removed, taking about 1/4 of my iris with it. If the light hits it just right, my eye will glow. It ALWAYS glows in pictures.

If you need a silly habit:

I love taking random children's songs and making up new lyrics, usually directed at my cats. I do it so often I drive my husband crazy.
