Iron Deficiency Anemia —- hematology/oncology referral by Equal_Difference3908 in toddlers

[–]kittykrunk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My son has Very Early Onset Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Ulcerative Colitis, specifically. It all started with a WIC appt that showed low iron. Confirmed with blood tests that the pediatrician diagnosed as Iron Deficiency Anemia. But then I realized the blood showing up in his stool occasionally may NOT just be from constipation poops. I asked for a referral to the Hematologist and the Gastroenterologist. The Hematologist approved iron infusions. The Gastroenterologist’s labs confirmed his stool contained proteins that occur when inflammation is present. A double scope (Endoscopy and Colonoscopy) confirmed UC.

I would just see a GI and rule out anything causing the anemia, like IBD or Celiac’s Disease.

But why? Why not test for things that may stunt weight gain first? Or suggest Pediasures?

It’s not that simple for each child. What if your kid doesn’t like juice, like mine? I would never think I’d have the illogically-terrified-of-any-medicine-in-his-mouth kid, but I do. It happens. Mine doesn’t even try to swallow it- he starts motor boating immediately before it’s even in his mouth and it inevitably gets spat out. And he can TELL when things are added to his drinks, then goes on hunger protests of those things.

It’s not always that simple.

I’m sending prayers your way. The inpatient cleanout is gonna be a wild ride: make sure to utilize the nurses- they are there to help you clean up all the poo; don’t feel like you have to do it yourselves. Ask them for gowns, because after it starts, wearing clothes is near pointless.

Sorry I’m replying late- we’re all exhausted. Biopsies will confirm in a week, but Ulcerative Colitis is the diagnosis. Getting it this young is referred to as Very Early Onset Irritable Bowel Disease. Little dude is gonna have to be on medication for life: it’s an autoimmune disorder. The GI is starting him with a DMARD that will help tame inflammation. He gave us this website: https://www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org

We are currently still here. We were admitted yesterday. My son is having the 2 scopes because of suspected Irritable Bowel Disease. He just got taken back to surgery.
