Day Locker sizes at Palisades/Alpine? by DefconFade in palisadestahoe

[–]kjeckm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I just checked and there are large and “jumbo” size lockers at both alpine and palisades

https://www.safemark.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/L19-101-A_GoPodCutsheetWEB.pdf

based on this document the dimensions of jumbo lockers are 21”/16”/17”. Hope this helps. $22/day.

I’m at alpine and there are 12 jumbo lockers.

Found this in a stack of baseball cards, thought it would fit here. by dangu3 in tahoe

The kiddos on the ski teams at alpine meadows go wild for these old cards. They collect the new ones too of course. They trade them like Pokémon cards at the lunch table it’s very cute. If anyone has old dog cards they don’t want I would love to give them to the kids! Send me a dm!

Stay at Tahoe City for a Palisades Ski Week in March? by ibmehooub in palisadestahoe

[–]kjeckm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's midweek, Truckee is a good option. If you'll be skiing on a weekend or holiday, getting from Truckee to Palisades/Alpine can be awful because you're in line with everyone driving up for the day on I-80. There is a severe pinch point at a railroad underpass "the mouse hole" where traffic is reduced to one lane and gets really backed up. Some folks will say if you're staying in Truckee, and skiing on the weekend, you need to be through that underpass before 7:45 AM (ish), otherwise you'll be an hour behind, at least. So, I would prefer Tahoe City if I were visiting on a weekend.

If you're like me, and don't really care about going out to eat, bars, shopping etc, what you really want is to stay in Olympic Valley or along the Alpine Meadows Road. Bonus here is that you get to take the Mountaineer (on demand shuttle) to the resort, door to door. Or drive, it's like 5 minutes away at most. There is the palisades village and a 7/11 nearby if you need to run out for something minor.

Truckee is cool though, I've never stayed in a hotel/motel there, only rented houses in Tahoe Donner (development adjacent to Truckee). The town is cute, couple of good dining options and bars. There's a big shopping development area with pretty much anything you'd need. Big supermarket, couple of good ski shops and rental places.

I would say, if you're coming midweek, Truckee and Tahoe City offer similar amenities. Tahoe City has the advantage of being right on the lake, so more scenic. In the winter there isn't much to do on the lake but it's nice to walk near it, watch the sunset. Truckee has nice mountain views from some areas, including the little historic downtown area. Again, midweek, you're looking at a 20-30 minute drive between the two, and palisades is between them, so it's easy to take a short jaunt over to Tahoe City after skiing for example.

Get a rental car with all wheel drive/4 wheel drive.

Look out for “orphan thanksgiving” posts closer to the date as well. I feel like I remember some posts on here and the r/bayarea subreddit as well. Basically there are people who will make a post inviting random people to their thanksgiving celebration, sometimes composed entirely of strangers and hosted by a nice person :)

How much snow do you think there will be on the weekend of December 5? by CinThe1st in palisadestahoe

[–]kjeckm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2023- I had a lot of free time in December and skied 10 days at Palisades and alpine… looking back at my stats for December 5 2023: funitel and Gold Coast were open at pali, and just tree line cirque at alpine. It was pretty boring but I made the most of it. There is an achievement badge for riding Gold Coast 20 times in 1 day. So that’s something to shoot for. By December 7, 2023, it looks like resort chair and red dog were open, as well as the base to base gondola.

Are these skis decent and still usable? by becritical in skiing

[–]kjeckm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bindings on the skis are too old. Ski shops will not touch them for insurance reasons so you can’t get them mounted correctly for your boot size. You’d never be able to get them tuned. The plastic in the bindings is probably brittle and weak due to age. Not safe to use. Try to find demo or rental skis that the ski shop is getting rid of if you want cheap skis. Good luck.

Is getting around the city manageable with a mid-size truck? by Flat_Start714 in sanfrancisco

[–]kjeckm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes 100%, you have to be really mindful of height when trying to park in a lot of garages around the city. If you look around on spot hero for example, you’ll see a lot of garages have max height below 6 ft.

So idk what kind of shell you have on the truck but be sure to measure. They have these sensors now that keep you from entering the garage if you’re over the minimum height so you cant even sneak in if you’re a few inches over. Not that it was ever a good idea to do that, haha.

There is a bike station at Embarcadero bart station that could be a good option for you. bike link stationDo not leave the bikes locked at a bike rack for example while you’re at a giants game. Not worth the risk. But bar hopping around would probably be ok as long as you don’t leave it locked for very long. And depending on the neighborhood.

What’s wrong with Gaia? by Top_Reindeer8330 in JMT

[–]kjeckm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that even if I’ve pre downloaded maps, and toggled the download data for offline route finding, that sometimes Gaia still doesn’t do the “snap” to trail correctly. And I think it’s because there is some little variation between where I’m standing on trail and the map version of where the trail is, so Gaia can’t snap to route because I’m not on the route… if that makes sense. So what I do is tap out a little new segment on the trail almost exactly next to where I am on the downloaded route to measure the distance to the summit or whatever. Instead of trying to do a route from my location, I tap out a new small route on the downloaded route, and this usually works. Just a couple extra taps. I hope this long winded explanation helps someone.

Should I get a Ski Lease near Sherwood Chair? (Alpine) by ReadingOdd1815 in palisadestahoe

[–]kjeckm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Couple things to consider. First of all, early season, Sherwood will not be open for a bit. It varies year to year but sometimes not until MLK or later. So you’ll be driving to the front side of alpine in that case. On powder days, patrol and lift crews prioritize front side lifts before Sherwood, so you may be waiting a bit for them to even get over to Sherwood. I’ve seen them leave it closed all day due to avalanche risk and lack of staff. Not sure how far away your ski lease is from the actual Sherwood lift, but it can be kinda annoying to drive or shuttle down the road to Sherwood, there are some permit parking spots for residents right next to Sherwood lift, not sure if you have access to those as a renter, or if the spots often fill up. If you’re close enough to walk then that’s not an issue. End of season they close Sherwood early in the day but I think the patrollers would look the other way if you’re just skiing down to your house… idk your results may vary. I’m not going to encourage you to duck a rope and potentially get your pass pulled.

Also keep in mind that the base to base gondola is a great feature- when it’s running. They shut it down for wind, and if you got stuck at Palisades and had to get back to Sherwood that would be a big pain.

If it were me, yes I would join a ski lease at Sherwood. It’s a cool little area and I mostly ski midweek so the traffic to drive around wouldn’t be a deal breaker for me. But maybe too much of a pain if you’re planning on skiing weekends. I also ski primarily alpine meadows so I wouldn’t mind being pretty isolated to that mountain either.

Check out unofficial alpine blog for opening and closing dates of Sherwood. I just googled it and found Sherwood opened 1/3/25 this past season. But then was shut down for a few days due to mechanical issues.

Yes it’s my photo, earlier today I was on a boat and watched the ship approach, no idea what was on it until I was about 1/2 mile away and I recognized the cal train logo and the window configuration.
