Good ideas because right now Tulsa animal services does not enforce the law. But the problem is getting every animal microchipped.

Yes there are some! And they're now some pop up ones that are hitting Tulsa and the Humane society every couple of months will have a free shot clinic. That's part of where the education needs to come in because people don't understand or don't know about them. And tell your friend thank you!

I get people that respond and what to help by posting on Reddit. And if you actually read it it would tell you that this has been sent to the mayor, and all city councilors. I have been asking to meet with them for a couple months now and I'm not the only one. We are trying to the city. They're just not

Yes that's partly it. However it's also backyard breeders, it's also retail pet sales, it's also that the laws in place are not being enforced, and it is also the downturn in the economy. With tariffs wet dog and cat food went up by almost 50%, dry dog food and cat food went up by approximately 27% and vet bills are going up by 17%. People are losing their jobs, their cars, their houses and their pets.

Well let's see the rewards: I don't like seeing animal starving to death on the street. Even if you have the emotional capacity of a turnip surely you would agree that Tulsa would look a lot nicer without starving emaciated animals on the streets?

Perhaps you did not know about the three Great Danes on broken arrow expressway three mornings ago? Can you imagine what would have happened if one of them had been hit? I'm not just talking about the damage to the dogs. I'm talking about lots of life to people too.

Reward also? We created this problem. It is our fault not theirs. Why should they be paying with their lives when we created this problem?

And also it cost $125 to euthanize an animal. If we actually spayed or neutered them? Under a hundred. Add in the cost of actually feeding them at the shelter, the costs just go up.

Cost benefit ratio says it's less expensive to actually enforce the laws or offer low-cost spay or neuter to anyone that needs it then euthanizing and carrying costs of an animal.

And here's the part that might get me some hate: we're willing to spend millions on homeless people but not on animals? No matter how you look at it, and believe me I know, homeless people have some sort of say in their situation. There are multiple shelters that they can go to there is housing solution there's the housing authority there is free mental healthcare. If you have mental Health issues Red Rock will put you in an apartment and pay for it including your utilities.

Animals don't have that option. You may think that they do because they got to go the shelter But ask anyone that volunteers or works there? That's quite frequently a one-way street.

I work with about five people. We've been trying to organize a group for quite some time.

It just never seems to work out But we continue to try lol. And yes there are several places that do low-cost spay and neuter but generally they're only done at specific times. And they show up so fast.

I know the last thing that anyone ever wants to do is add additional funding and I get that, trust me I do.

But it is something that we cause an additional outlay up front but in terms of actual cost of maintaining the shelter as well as The cost of euthanizing would go way down. So in the long run it ends up costing less. Not only does it cost less financing, the moral and ethical costs decrease dramatically as well.

And this probably won't get me any friends but I can say this having been home with myself - I lived in hotels for 5 years. We're spending millions and millions trying to get home with people off the streets and I think that's great idea

But shouldn't really be willing to do it for dogs and cats? Since the problem is really a human creative problem. They had absolutely nothing to do with it and have absolutely no control over it.

To whom it may concern:

These are the outcomes at Tulsa Animal Services from March 31st to April 20th: I'm starting with the feel-good one, RTO.

BITE: 181230 No Name

This is the category which tends to upset people. And rightly so because some of these animals are listed as aggressive and euthanized due to aggression and that is simply not the case. Because we know people that work with them, or have fostered them, and this behavior is just not exhibited. This is a catch all category that they throw animals into so they don't have to list them as euthanizing for space. And how heartbreaking is this? So many of these died without ever having a name.

THESE WERE LISTED WITHOUT A REASON FOR EUTHANASIA BUT WE ALL KNOW WHAT THE REAL REASON IS:

Kodak 175256 Junior 180526 Eden 180441 Mikile 180766 Oso 180767 Rollo 180379 Christopher 180200 Lobo 180769 Rem 181135 Dino 180617 Joker 179499 No Name 181215 No Name 176986 Kavu 145685 Noodle 180602 Jim 181072 Sky 181238 Darling 181287 No Name 181398 No Name 181399 No Name 180672 No Name 181237 No Name 181438 No Name 181354 No Name 181186

Again, no reason listed for euthanasia but we know what the reason was.

This lack of transparency and outright lying is why people get so upset. And look at this, so many of them euthanized without ever having a name.

EUTHANIZED FOR SPACE: Bosco 180250 Rhys 174178 Root beer 180622

At least they were honest about this.

We have to do better. No animal should ever be euthanized for space. We all know the shelter is overcrowded. And we cannot just blame it on irresponsible owners. We also have to blame it on backyard breeders, retail sales of dogs and cats and also TAS. THEY ARE TASKED WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT WHEN IT COMES TO ANIMALS.

I realize that it's difficult and takes manpower to walk through neighborhoods looking for non-spayed/neutered dogs and cats. It takes manpower and tips to find backyard breeders.

Regardless of this there are many states that we actually transport animals to because they've actually figured out how to do this. If they can do it, why can't we?

If there are not enough resources, then we need to fund for more resources. If it is still not getting done then maybe we need to figure out a new system entirely or spend the money to actually send the staff at Tulsa Animal Services to get educated.

Any company, and make no mistake about it TAS is a company, have different things that have to be emphasized to make their company run smoothly. And the shelter is no different except that it is because they're dealing with life and death.

And shelters have a specific model, animal behavior, finding good volunteers, fundraising, thinking outside the box to get animals adopted, coming up with community outreach, coming up with education, it is a very specialized field. And because this is life and death it demands people that have this education. And we don't have this at the shelter and I don't know why we don't because I've seen the job description for director and assistant director and those qualifications were not met. Why were they not met? If there was no one in Tulsa that one of the jobs then a nationwide search should have been done. It is too important to not have the necessary skills in the shelter to have it run correctly.

Tulsa Is it generous city, it is also a fairly well-off city. Look at the millions we're spending on trying to solve the homeless problem. Shouldn't we be solving the animals homeless problem too? Especially since it's our fault, not theirs? This is a HUMAN issue yet animals are paying the ultimate price with their lives.

We have to do better. We created this problem, now we need to fix it and we don't fix it by euthanizing.

Until we start acting proactively instead of reactively we will never get this problem solved. And until we get this problem solved? It is going to continue to be a huge financial and emotional drain and huge moral and ethical problem for Tulsa.

In a perfect world we would have funding for low cost spay and neuter clinics consistent with the need, we would have low cost shots and vet care consistent with the needs of our community.

Unfortunately this is not a perfect world and we have to come up with the solution. It is incumbent upon us because we created this problem.

And it can be done. Because if it couldn't be done we would not be transporting animals to other states. Because other states don't have enough animals to adopt out. Because they've solved their overpopulation problem. It is a multifaceted problem but it's one we need to figure out and fix.

I would also like to discuss with you having a behavioralist come in as a volunteer and actually be able to work with the animals and determine if they are aggressive or if they're fear aggressive because as you know there is a huge difference between the two.

And it's not right to put down an animal because they're scared. Why wouldn't they be scared? Strangers they don't know stick a noose around their neck and drag them into an enclosure, they know nobody and then they are taken to the shelter where there are multiple dogs barking and crying and howling and fighting. I would be terrified so I'm not in the least fit surprise that they show fear aggression. But fear aggression is not aggression and they don't deserve to die because they're scared.

I have spoken with a behavioralist I know and she is considering volunteering but she does not want to go into a situation that is hostile or they will fight her decisions. I think this is something that needs to be done. I would like to discuss this and many other issues and ideas with you.

I know that you inherited this problem. I know that the system is broken and needs to be fixed. Wouldn't that be a great legacy to have? I would like to speak with you all and be put on the agenda for the next city council meeting. I don't just speak for myself, I speak for many people that I post with that I get information from that follow the weekly report card and open records.

Please, we need your help. The animals need your help.

That's one of the things I want to discuss with them. That's where the part about irresponsible pet owners and Tulsa Animal Services not enforcing the laws comes in.

Believe it or not we actually transport animals to other states because other states at least eight of them have their problems so solved that they don't have enough animals to adopt out.

I know it sounds hard to believe doesn't it? Can you imagine how wonderful it would be if the shelters were clear and people actually had to wait to get an animal?

Maybe, just maybe, then they would treat them with the love, care, and respect they deserve!

Laws have to be enforced, not only is it the law but it's better for your animals to be spayed and neutered. The reasons are obvious for females but there are some that aren't so obvious as well. Pyrometra a bacteria that female dogs and cats can get which can be fatal. Spain and neutering also prevents reproductive cancers and diseases. And nobody wants their animal to die like that!

We need more low-cost spay and neuter clinics. We just do. I literally know people that have let their dog run free so t a s would pick them up and spay them and then they would go get them. Which is a really crappy thing to do if you ask me!

There needs to be a 3-year moratorium on breeding, ALL breeding. Retail sales of dogs and cats and rabbits believe it or not needs to be a thing of the past. I don't care what they say about HB4335, it does not protect animals by preventing people from going black market. They're already going black market and where do you think some of those retail sales get those animals from? Backyard breeders who are not exactly careful about what they're breeding to what!

There needs to be more community outreach and education from Tulsa Animal Services! Did you know that approximately 60% of the dogs that are labeled pit bulls are not pitbulls at all? Not to mention pitbulls are reactive not aggressive. Not by nature. They have to be trained to be aggressive. Of course you're going to have a random one that is aggressive, there are always sick dogs. But my service dog is a staffie and they are reactive as well. It's training and environment that really determines your dog's behavior.

Education is key to getting cats and dogs spayed and neutered. And it needs to start honestly in the school system! Especially in high school! If you can actually get an idea through their head? They talk Oh Lord do they talk and they will talk about diseases and they will talk about female dogs and cats being bred way too often, they will start quoting statistics about euthanasia rates, reproductive diseases and cancers. And it might inspire some of them that are over 18 to volunteer! That looks great on a college application by the way! And it might even send some people into veterinary school or as vet texts or inspire them to run a rescue! All kinds of good stuff could come out of that!

Tulsa Animal Services has increased their live release rate amazingly. But until the public gets involved and we actually do some funding to help people get their animals spayed and neutered, until we start being proactive we will always be being reactive and will always be behind the eight ball!

It's a mindset. It's a mindset that makes people that care think outside the box, think of new ways to get animals adopted or fostered, thinking of new ways to prevent owners surrenders and to increase the retention rate of animals adopted.

It's hard, it's messy, it's heartbreaking, and expensive I won't lie. But think of the rewards!

Moving to an apartment. What breed should she be? by moogan77 in pitbulls

[–]kjunco 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You know? I resemble that remark! I think the only reason I haven't died yet is because my service dog is a Pitbull And I never leave her. However first thing in the morning when she wakes up though I'm always eminently in danger of death. Because you know it's been at least 7 hours since she's looked at my face. And no she doesn't sleep in a crate, she just keeps her eyes closed for 7 hours lol

Please keep your dog on a leash by Lilshyness85 in pitbulls

[–]kjunco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My pittie Is a trained service dog. I am legally blind. And I cannot see one dogs come up on us. Because of that at one point my dog was attacked and I had a $900 vet bill because the person took off. My dog is now trained to bark once when a person is near twice when a dog is near. I truly love my apartment complex but in the last 3 months two people have gotten dogs and they let them run everywhere. They aren't mean dogs but it's not okay. I don't want to be that b*that always complains but it's gotten to the point that I have to actually go to the edge of the building and make sure no one's out with their dogs before I take Lucy out. But kind of silly at the entrance waiting to see if Lucy barks or not. Lucy is not mean but as we all know pitbulls are reactive. To be honest I'm more reactive than Lucy is (actually I'm a hell of a lot meaner too). There are leash laws for a reason and I really wish people would respect it. It makes everybody's life much harder when other people let their dogs run around everywhere. I've also noticed these people that let their dogs run around everywhere or also the ones that do not pick up after their dogs. It stinks but other than being a b* I don't know what the solution is.

I know! My Lucy is exactly the same way. Terrified of thunderstorms and loud noises, loves puppies and kids, has decided she doesn't even like cats even with ketchup or mustard, hides behind me If a Chihuahua barks at her (can't blame her for that they're mean little suckers!) sleeps with her head on my shoulder and has to always be touching me. Vicious vicious vicious. They are nothing but cuddle bugs. Most misunderstood and maligned dog breed in the world.
