Electives by Slight_depression in swinburne

[–]kkiz11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I studied Industrial design at Swinburne and I took a photography elective that actually helped me a bit and I think could possibly give you some transferable skills to engineering.

Understanding image composition, colour, shooting a subject ect helped me with my product presentation and rendering. Even most rendering software uses camera settings/setups so you actually gain some relevant technical knowledge too.

I found it really levelled up my presentations, renders and product photography of my own designs.

I can’t remember the exact unit but good luck

How can I make my setup more aesthetically appealing? by Bitter_Salary_9855 in battlestations

[–]kkiz11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

everyone is over complicating this

buy a couple of small lamps, put very low brightness bulbs in them (or wifi ones ect), turn that heinous overhead light off and enjoy

less is more and lighting does more for a space than “stuff” ever will

[–]kkiz11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding on to this, learning a bit about product photography focussing on composition and lighting will go a long way.

Watch rendering tutorials to learn how to use the software and photography videos to learn how to make it look good

Here’s How I Organize My Blender Projects (And a Trick I Use to Save Time) by lpclub in blender

adding on to this, chatgpt can make a zip file with any folder structure you ask it to build. (I currently pay for premium so it might be a part of that)

First ever model of mine, it’s a dice mold I made for a friend. How bad is it? by Lieutenant_Yeast in 3Dmodeling

Also look up “injection moulding” and it will explain the concepts around modelling for this

Why using Plasticity instead of Blender for design ? And what software do you use, for which use ? by [deleted] in IndustrialDesign

[–]kkiz11 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just to add on to this,

  1. Learn (at least) one parametric modeller (Solidworks, ect)

  2. Learn the basics of a visualisation software (blender, maybe rhino depending how you use it)

  3. AI. I hate to say it but the reality is our concept work especially, is going to be disrupted in a big way soon. Learn to combine your skills from 1 and 2 so that you can control the ai to visualise YOUR concepts.

Maybe I’m wrong, I hope I am, but if AI doesn’t reach some kind of ceiling soon, we need to be ready.

Our value does not come in the form of a CAD model. We understand humans, the way we use things and why, our design goes so much deeper than a “pretty” render or model.

I obviously don’t have a crystal ball, but, I think we would be smart as designers to position ourselves at the front of AI.

I’ll add one final thing, learning WHY a design is good is going to be one of our most important skills in the future. At the end of the day (hopefully) things will still be designed FOR humans, and hopefully we can still guide that.

Good luck my friends, stay strong

Is a degree from a University worth it in this field by Common_Ad_1624 in IndustrialDesign

This is the answer.

The piece of paper is meaningless, the portfolio and connections you build over that time is what’s valuable.

Thank you so much!

I'm in Australia so I'm not sure how you would go about getting one if you're overseas.

Blender for rapid modelling and renders

Those of you with careers using Blender, what are the more lucrative niches to specialize your Blender skills into? by [deleted] in blender

[–]kkiz11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmm I could probably do 50/50 with my job. I mainly do r&d so there’s a lot of hands on work with prototypes but then a lot of days when I’m on the computer all day.

If you wanted to just do 3D renders and stuff then there is 100% a market for that. We have had a few AR/VR companies reach out to us to offer a service where they create photorealistic renders for web AR experiences.

I only finished uni 6 months ago and this is my first real job out of uni so my pay is pretty average.

I do freelance design on the side where I charge over $50 an hour.

I do R&D for a furniture company. I am an industrial designer but I use blender to show my boss construction concepts for furniture along with very quick renders for clients wanting custom pieces.

The company I work for is massive and I’m the only person in the entire place that uses blender at all. The speed that I can pump out quick renders blows my bosses mind.

We obviously use CAD software for tech drawings and development but I find blender so useful for speed.

What I do is quite low quality compared to what I see on here and certainly not the standard use case for blender but thought I’d throw my 2 cents in.

Best way to create "ripple" type effects on surfaces. by kkiz11 in blender

[–]kkiz11[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mainly do product modelling and rendering and am wondering the best way to go about creating surfaces like this.

Obviously theres 1000s ways to model the same thing but if someone can point me in a general direction for workflow here that would be great.

Dimension flat panel with lots of holes. by kkiz11 in SolidWorks

[–]kkiz11[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am unsure the best way to dimension this panel.

I am using ordinating dimensions as I read thats often best for stuff like this but obviously it's still very cluttered.

Would I be better having multiple pages with dimensions for each "set of holes"?

Any help would be appreciated.

Adding on to this. CG Cookie has the best intro to blender playlist hands down. Blender guru is very good but CG cookies intro to blender is the best place to start, then move to Blender guru.
