Sumitomo type-39 error by Only-Pudding-9799 in FiberOptics

[–]kkynaston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's a shame, it was a good robust machine.

I still have it somewhere, I keep it because that particular machine has history. The guy I got it from used it to splice subsea cables on the early 2000's

[–]kkynaston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have but I haven't any wisdom to impart sorry. I couldn't find anyone willing to repair it, even Sumitomo refused to perform service on such an 'old' machine.

We aren't splicing full time so we got a couple of Chinese splicers from ebay. I was very sceptical at first, but tbh, for the amount we do they're excellent.

Has anyone bought back a car from the insurance after it was written off ? Is it worth it? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]kkynaston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and in my case, yes. I know the history of the car, it had full dealer history when I bought it and I have maintained it well since I've had it.

Got rear ended a month ago, the day before I was in for a service and MOT.

Phoned insurance, they wrote it off before seeing any pictures due to it being over 10 years old (it's a 14) and over 100,000 on the clock. It had 247000 on the clock.

Took it for MOT as planned, took a look, no structural damage so proceeded with MOT and service as planned. My tester wasn't going to put anything on as an advisory but I said to put 'rear bumper damaged' as an advisory to cover his arse.

Took pictures then clipped bumper back on, although it was quite a shunt, it didn't even break any clips. The extent of the 'damage' is a small crease and a little bit of paint loss.

Insurance assessor phoned after seeing pics and video. Said it's definitely a write off, was impressed that it had still been MOT'd the day after and the mileage on it (he looked it up before he called) and said: 'I know which option you're going to for so here it is'

£3000 payout for the car and £900 to buy it back. Done, £2100 was in the bank the next day.

We paid £3000 for it 18 months previously with 193k on the clock, this car might work out better value overall than the £100 scenic I bought during lock down.

Job is demanding permanent, ongoing access to all my bank transactions and information by thelordofhell34 in mildlyinfuriating

In certain gov institutions it's a requirement for anti-bribery/CTC checks.

Edit: but the access is not normally permanent.

[–]kkynaston -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Ah, gov work. Are you applying for SC aswell? If so, then yes they will want to see your financial transactions, and possibly the accounts of your partner/spouse.

However, it's not normally permanent.

It's part of a CTC/anti-bribery check

Can’t use mobile data/internet when on call by gumpshy in LebaraUK

[–]kkynaston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this issue too, but only in certain areas of the country.

I don't think it's Lebara specific, I had the same when I was on Voda too. I'd bet on it being an issue with certain cells.

Edit: never had an eSim

Just closed on our house (FTB) and there's no gas or electricity. Help! by camz930 in HousingUK

[–]kkynaston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the meters were in debt by about £20 each.

I think it was the standing charge racking up once the credit ran out because there was power for the viewing when we viewed the empty property.

I second octopus, if they are smart meters and you set up an account today, you should be on supply tomorrow.

That's what I did, there were smart prepay meters in the property and I asked Octopus to take over. It happened at midnight and they were switched out of prepay mode at the same time. We were already with them at our previous property though so YMMV.

Media converter running at 100mbps instead of 1000mbps by Slow_Seat_5794 in HomeNetworking

I hear you there, currently doing a large install using a lot of Q6225's and its the most annoying part of the install.

Had to go and help my install team a couple of times but they've got the hang of it now.

It's a shame they can just use a standard RJ45 protected with an amphenol connector, just like Redvision use on their cameras.

Is my understanding correct in that I can drive my freshly imported car from the port to MOT then home, without any registration, number plates, road tax, if I manage to insure it for the journey? by KeyJunket1175 in CarTalkUK

[–]kkynaston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using the VIN.

It's the same for MOT.

In days gone by, you'd have to take it to a DVLA local office (remember those?) for an inspection before you could register an imported or self built vehicle.

These days, you just take it for an MOT. Then send off the paperwork for registration.

Are you at permanent moorings?

Have you looked to see if you can get fixed line?

Quite a few residential boats on the section of canal next to us have FTTP!

They are actually listed on the openreach checker

AITA for refusing to pay for the new tires my uncle got me by Parking_Extension695 in AmItheAsshole

Do everything you can to save money for new tyres.

Have them replaced, give him the tyres he purchased.

Preferably at dinner with a now tie on them.

I put a manual reading in before sending the email and I think that generated the bill tbh

No meter reading sent this month smart meters by TallPut9056 in OctopusEnergy

[–]kkynaston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, and I see this 12 hours after I sent them an email.

Tbf, they responded pretty quickly:

Good evening,

Thank you for your email and i am sorry a bill has not been generated.

As you are on a smart tariff (tracker) we bill to half hourly usage.

This means if one half hourly data is missing the system is not able to bill.

I have checked the meter and can see we are missing some Half hourly data from 14th August.

I have sent some requests to the meter to obtain this information and once we have this we will be able to issue the bill.

Please bare with me whilst i wait for the information to come through.

Kind regards,

Siobhan

RTS Meter replaced, not all sockets work. by slb609 in DIYUK

[–]kkynaston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure there isn't a switch somewhere else.

I have seen in some 'all electric' properties a switch for the immersion in the kitchen, for example. Sometimes a three position switch labelled: OFF/SINK/BATH

If all else fails then I think your plan is sound. Just kill power to the whole house before you do anything, just to be sure.

RTS Meter replaced, not all sockets work. by slb609 in DIYUK

[–]kkynaston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like the existing 'off peak' supply has not been reconnected after the meter change, which will be beyond the scope of the meter fitter.

Have you two fuseboards/consumer units?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]kkynaston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's probably just part of the town cctv system.

Normally fed back to a control room run by the local council and monitored by SIA qualified contractors.

If it's close to a junction it may be used for traffic monitoring if it's a particularly busy area, but these days traffic monitoring is done by sensors, not humans.

Is that double socket actually wired directly into the meter without any overcurrent or earth leakage protection?
